It would be a good ending for him but I think the Williams sisters as a duo would be a realistic choice possibly over LeBron. They grew up in inner city Los Angeles and the last Olympics in the city also played a role in their life too. They have a combined 8 gold medals, which is more than LeBron. They also represent the dream that we all aspire as little kids, which is starting from nothing and working themselves to the top.

LeBron fits some of these criteria, especially the last one, but he doesn’t have as strong of connections to Los Angeles.

I was looking at the last two people to do this. Obviously, Ali was an easy choice in 1996. The 1984 choice was Rafer Johnson, who was an Olympic gold medalist but also did a ton of humanitarian work with the Special Olympics so I think that needs to play a role too like how you inspire others, which does help LeBron but the Williams sisters arguably have more of a claim to that.

Kareem certainly can be a choice for many reasons, but based on what I found, it seems like in the past 40 years, so like mid 1980s Olympics onwards almost every single person chosen was either a current Olympian, former Olympian, or part of a group that included Olympians if they weren’t the actual Olympian. Kareem unfortunately chose not to go to the Olympics so that might mean he isn’t really eligible, although there’s not an official criteria.

The exceptions would be 1994 where they chose a prince of Norway, which is a Winter Olympics, but his dad and grandfather both participated in the Olympics so there was some connection. The 2012 game did have some non-Olympians as part of a larger group directly chosen by former Olympians, as did when Wayne Gretzky was chosen as part of a group in the 2010 Olympics that included other Olympians. So it’s possible but it does seem like being an Olympian is a very strong criteria. The last 2 chosen here were both gold medalists too, in addition to just being an Olympian.

Hear me out here, it’d be the Mavs, the Mavs are the ones who kick started Lebron leaving the Lakers by trading Luka for the AD, Kyrie is still technically on the Mavs as of right now, you’d have Lebron the greatest SF/PF in the modern era, vs the future star SF/PF in Flagg.
