Pat Riley’s sheer longevity.
There was a post on here earlier today that pointed out that Klay Thompson signing with the Miami Heat means that Pat Riley will have both signed Klay Thompson as an executive, and coached Klay’s father, former Laker Mychal Thompson.
This got me thinking again about Riley‘s longevity in the NBA. Some believe that he has stuck around for too long, but I’m not sure if there’s anyone who comes close to his length of time spent directly involved with the league, at least not at a high level day-to-day.
As player
- San Diego Rockets (1967-70)
- Los Angeles Lakers (1970-75)
- Phoenix Suns (1975-76)
As NBA coach
- Lakers (1979-90; initially assistant, then HC)
- New York Knicks (1991-95)
As team president/intermittent head coach
- Miami Heat (1995-present)
This means that since 1967, there have only been four seasons where Pat Riley was not directly involved with an NBA team, and the most recent of these was 1990-91.
This upcoming season will, remarkably, mark the sixtieth anniversary of the start of Riley’s association with the NBA. There are former players who stepped back from coaching and remained involved, fulfilling roles like serving as a team ambassador and the like, but none to my knowledge who have remained involved day-to-day like this for such a long time.
