People forgot about Mark Price
Was a 18ppg 9apg guy during his prime years and a lights-out shooter. 4 time All Star, 3 All NBA 3rd time a 1st team All NBA. Career 40% 3pt and .904 for FTs
This seems low by today’s numbers but this was an era where the best scoring PGs like Isiah scored about 20. He would cook in the modern era.
When I go back in history, Nash was like the improved version of Price. And Hali is the closest present time resemblance to Nash.
Think peak Price would be similar in playstyle to Hali today, in a relative way.
Very similar. Nash was a better passer and better overall player, but Price was a better scorer- his floater range game was fucking deadly, and his release was way quicker, which let him shoot better in traffic.
I would disagree that Price was a better scorer. And I love Mark Price. You can see some of Mark Price in Steve Nash’s game.
Nash was a pure passer but look at his shooting splits. He was somewhat the prototype to Curry. If Nash wanted to score his PPG would’ve went way up as he was an excellent 3P shooter and his assists would’ve dropped. His footwork around the basket was insane and he had incredible touch with the ball.
There’s no one really that comparable to Mark since that type of PG is actually somewhat outdated but yea Hali is probably the closest.
He was the second 50/40/90 guy in the NBA after Larry Bird.
And he basically invented splitting the pick and roll.
I know people love Stockton but the gap between Mark’s peak and Stockton’s peak really wasn’t that far off (or imo they were at the same level). Stockton just played in a more controlled environment, which had him making all the passes to the post or flare, Price played in a more free motion setting. Price was also a better scorer.
Stockton’s career accomplishments speak for themselves but, depending on what team they were on, Stockton wasn’t even better per se than peak Price.
I recently watched a lot of 80s and 90s ball and I ALMOST want to say Sloan put the cap on Stockton. Stockton was a more willing shooter and using the clock as soon there was an optimal play before Sloan. Once Sloan came, every fucking play was pounding the ball at the wing for 20 seconds until Malone established post position or the shooter flares out to the top of the key.
Price definitely underrated. Short lived prime and Cavaliers were flawed. Their team defensive effort was just so lazy even when they made deep playoffs runs.
Depends on the defense. Mark was definitely better in terms of peak offense but Stockton was a better defender.
Cleveland also had a lot of talent. I know the Jazz had Malone but the Cavs had crazy depth. Nance and Daughtery were both All Stars, Harper was one of the best non-All Stars ever, and they had other good role players.
Harper wasn’t there anymore by the time Cavs got Nance, and became decent.
I think Stockton’s defense is definitely overhyped due to him getting a lot of steals off playing the passing lanes and picking it off by doubling the big man in the key.
His one on one defense was just slightly above average, people would drive by him, and he’d give up a lot of uncontested shots (this is in part due to the team defensive scheme I suppose). He also got posted up by a lot other point guards, even like Nate McMillan.
Anyways, he’s not this lock down defender people think he is.
I think Harper and Nance were both on the court for the famous MJ game winner but yea it seems like Harper left by the time Mark Price reached his prime.
I don’t know too much about defense honestly. Wish there was a better way to evaluate it but I’m not going to pretend like I know so I was just asking the question. I honestly base a lot of the defense off of accolades and reputation from older players since I was not watching as I’m on the younger side so I’ll take your word for it too.
It should be noted in this conversation that Nash was an awful defender as well.
I would argue Price was better than Stockton for a brief period.
His shooting was crazy.
Price is a bit like Ray Allen in that they’re both all-time great shooters who also get underappreciated for their all around games. Both guys were all around players with very good athleticism at their peaks.
Mark Price was one of the best passers in the league AND the best shooter by a decent margin, and a top 3 player in the league. Stockton, at his peak, was an excellent passer on a great team, but and all-star at best.
The closest modern comparison is Dame imo, but a better passer. Both were at that slightly below MVP level
I get this is a Mark Price thread, but he wasn’t a top 3 player in the league lol. He made one 1st team All NBA and was clearly below the other 4 that made it if you want to know who was better then
That’s fair, I was probably exaggerating a bit. I said he was around Dame’s level in another comment and I think that’s about right
Yea I agree
Price’s peak was way above Stockton’s. As good as Stockton was, it was his longevity that made him truly special.
People don’t really talk about Stockton’s peak however.
I remember how fast he used to get the ball in the front court. I used to think he was a bit crazy. I wish they’d kept Ron Harper as his running mate instead of trading for Ferry. Mark was sick out there.
Dude was money at the free throw line
My favorite player as a kid
Same
They forgor 💀
I never forgot about him. Dude was really really good back then. Played on some good Cavs teams.
he had a cool looking shot too. Him and Brad were money.
Willpower. All. Game. Long.
He came up a little during the 2024 draft cycle since Reed Sheppard was getting comps to him
Had no idea he was still an assistant coach in the league up until around 2019. I’d previously thought he was one of those players that chose to just vanish after retirement…
No one split double teams more effectively than Price. An all-time favorite of mine.
