He’s just an awkward fit in the modern nba I think. He’s a good player but not good enough to justify the usage he needs to be effective basically. He needs the ball in his hands, but putting the ball in his hands takes the ball away from better players. He’s not a good off ball player and his defense is hit or miss.

He’s a good dribbler that doesn’t turn the ball over, that’s about it as far as positives go. He can’t shoot, doesn’t finish at the rim, doesn’t draw fouls, isn’t a high level paaser, can’t rebound, and can’t defend. He had back-to-back seasons where 10% of his shots were blocked. Basketball reference has a stat called TS Add which basically tells you how many more or less points a player scored relative to a player with league average efficiency. Schroeder is -750 for his career and has 0 positive seasons. He’s only twice been a neutral value player overall and those were the seasons where he had outlier good 3pt shooting. The question isn’t what is this guy doing behind the scenes that makes it so he can’t find a home, it’s what kind of high level blackmail material does he possess that keeps getting him chances

He IS a good player. Which is why he is tradeable. Otherwise he would have been tossed aside years ago.

I don’t actually think he is. Most things said about him as a dude are generally pretty positive. I think he’s just in that limbo where he’s good enough to contribute, so teams that think of themselves as contenders but don’t have the assets for a huge move always want him (most teams will always take a scoring spark off the bench from a backup PG). He’s also not good enough that teams ever feel like he’s a core part of their roster, so when other teams offer them a few assets for him, he’s easy to flip without feeling like you’re derailing your team.

I don’t think that, I think he was for most of his career a high floor, low ceiling guy, who plugged and played pretty well as a 2-way guard off the bench, to not fuck it up when on the floor pretty much everywhere he went. Cleveland this season was the first time I’ve watched him and just wondered how he still is even in the league. He was a slight upgrade from Lonzo just because he wasn’t afraid to shoot if open, but otherwise he didn’t do anything IMO to justify the minutes he got beyond the fact they had no other options really off the bench, and Atkinson just hated playing certain guys on that bench last year.

Every playoff team is looking for a guy like him in his prime (when he still had a relatively decent jumper when he wasn’t getting blocked), to be that spark to get their bench over the hump, and somehow teams always saw some value for him in the midseason deadline trade.

Luckily he found a niche to fill for over a decade in the NBA. Not a lot of journeymen like him can say that.
