because there are tons of things d white does so much better than a 30m guy that a team could want. jb does not for his price point. hes amazing but in general a max hurts a team crazy and the player better be generational

Derrick white is an elite defender and excellent passer. He’s also good at shooting off ball, he just can’t take shots off the dribble.

He’s a better player even if he has worse box score numbers.

1st Team All-Defense is not a bad regular season

The Celtics have one of the most enviable cap situations in the league rn. Every contract on the roster except the PG contract is a plus contract, and the PG contract is expiring.

I wouldn’t call Derrick White’s last season bad. His shooting percentages were down, but, when you look at all of the metrics, he had a very good season. He led the team in assists, was virtually tied with Pritchard as the second leading scorer, was also tied with Queta for blocks, and led the team in plus minus. No question, the Celtics needed Brown’s scoring last season. But White was every bit as important to the team’s success. With decreased ballhandling responsibilities and the benefit of Tatum’s passing skills, his shooting numbers are likely to improve this season.

I don’t think you’re looking at it the right way. We needed to get under the tax this season, but having tradable salary next season when the tax is reset will allow us to make any move we want. The name of the game is flexibility.

Derrick White seems to me like the kind of player that will have a long career. I also think playing next to Tatum will help him go back to his natural role and his shooting will correct itself. More importantly, he is one of the highest impact defensive guards in the league and that didn’t dip last season at all.

But if you somehow find that production not worth 30 mil a year, we have a bunch of random picks and could use White’s salary to bring in another 30 million dollar player.

He was borderline unplayable during the Sixers series, which I think made the rest of his season look worse than it actually was.

I think he gets one more shot to prove that he still belongs. Hopefully there’s less pressure on him to produce with Paul George in the rotation and he can tick his efficiency back up. That being said, I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s gone by the trade deadline. Some contender might talk themselves into the idea that he’s the piece that gets them over the hump.

Ideally he plays well enough that he’s worth keeping and then takes an extension that values him appropriately when the time comes.

If his offense is going to pick back up, then sure keep him. But there’s just a clear downward trend and i don’t think he can provide reliable offense while also providing the effort he needs to defensively. Then you also have RHJ who whenever he had derrick type minutes last season he had ⁵⁰⁄₄₀ splits and was able to play very well defensively.

People blamed JB for the sixers loss, but derrick was bad on both ends and basically just putting up turnovers and transition points every time he shot the ball. Everybody says he does a ton of things but if those things aren’t showing up in the playoffs anymore what’s the point.

I just think we need more reliable offense more than we need his defense, with all these young wings who can defend on the roster + cenac who can pretty much guard 1-5 i just don’t see the need to spend 30+ on derrick for the next 3 years unless his offense comes back.

You are underrating Derrick White’s value to the team. He made 1st Team All-Defense, he lead the eastern conference in +/-, he had a +9.4 on/off (compared to Jaylen’s -5.5 in the same mpg), and he actually is a very good, connective passer as he led the team in apg.

Derrick White is an excellent role player that every team would love to have. He won’t need to be the lead facilitator this year so hopefully he can get back to hitting a high percentage of his 3s in catch and shoot situations.

When you have a superstar like Tatum, it’s often more beneficial to have guys who are great at basically everything and will play within their role than it is to have another elite iso scorer

I’m also a bit worried about D White. He was the biggest reason we lost the sixers series. He was missing wide open shot after wide open shot. They weren’t even guarding him anymore at times and were doubling Tatum and Brown instead.

Derrick had a bad playoffs, but he was 7th in the league in RAPM this past season in a season he shot 39% from the field. Seventh. Dude is an incredible basketball player. Brad is never trading him.

White was ok in regular season stunk in the playoffs. So did jb and the rest. Still would rather have brown. The eye test says brown is way better.

JB’s contract was stupid - trade him before he loses value… And white had plenty of value. It’s not hard to assume or understand the demographics of the contracts.

White is similar to bregman for the sox. He’s a terrific defender and a decent shooter. Plus he has those intangibles of being in right spot at right time. Don’t downplay his leadership.

I…. think this is a bad take,to be polite.White put career highs across the board or very nearly, points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks. 16.5 ppg, 5.4 easiest, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks is damn solid. They just paid a backup center a little under 16 million per year to HOPEFULLY play 55-60 games and 18-20 mpg. 30 million a year is still a bargain for White.

Literally the only negative was White’s 3 point shooting, which dropped significantly, he’s a catch and shoot guy, he relies on other guys drawing attention to hit open looks. If being inefficient is his only flaw, then we’re looking good. IMO he’ll be up around 37-38% with Tatum and George playing with him, spreading the floor. But we can’t forget he’s 32, the age where most guards start declining. Though IMO Dwhite should age well, he’s a big guard with a huge wingspan who doesn’t rely on speed or an explosive first step or insane vertical. I think he’ll age pretty well, he’s only played heavy minutes the last few years.

D white better be going nowhere, he’s on my DJ level of respect for amazing role players with ice water in there veins in crunch time. JB makes literally double, nothing comparable. White’s contract is a bargain and any team in the league would jump at the chance to grab him.

It’s not a bad contract is why. It’s good for the value he gets and I think you’d see that proved out if the Celtics did put him on the market
