Is there a specific reason that Europe ended up caring about FIBA so much more than America? Like every European superstar wants to win this thing but the top guys on the Team USA roster are MarJon Beauchamp and a dude that played 40 NBA games 5 years ago
Americans players are not driven by national pride but money and fame. You get none of that in FIBA world championship because Americans just don’t care. I mean they call NBA titles “World Champion” when it’s actually a national championship.
Team USA is also not consistent. There is no identity because the roster constantly changes depending on who is willing to play that year. In other countries, the best players are always present, and the team develop a strong identity and camaraderie that carries on constantly. Roster changes are minor and progressive.
Above all, it’s an honor and a duty to represent one’s country. It’s the number one pride and they will never miss it, except for force majeur. That’s absent in the US despite their authoritarian-like pledge of allegiance and constant playing of the national anthem. Europe doesn’t do any of that yet has a strong sense of national pride.
So, I would not say Europe has some more than the US. It’s the US that is lacking something present in all other countries, not just Europe.
