One of the reasons I keep saying Kawhi and the Clippers have been participating with the league to cooperate in the informal punishment process that has been taking place since early on is Kawhi showing up in Toronto for a charity event randomly during the season. The guy who won’t do sponsor work suddenly decides to start doing appearances in the place he forces a trade.

The series was published between June and August of 1996. Other papers were slow to follow up initially. However things were soon to change.

Maxine Waters and Feinstein wrote to the CIA director John Deutsch and Attorneys General Janet Reno, asking for an investigation. Maxine Walters was outraged by the articles and became one of Webb’s supporters. The publicity of the reports in Washington DC was what drove the push back. The first retort was from the Washington post in October in 1996, they had a team of 17 people researching and following up for Webb’s claim with a series of retorts defending the government and minimized the role of the CIA. Jesse Katz developed a different picture of the origin of the cocaine trade and added in many smaller players who actually worked full time in smuggling. Doyle McManus followed up with a second, longer article, discrediting that contributions to the Contras were substantially less than millions. What was interesting was that following this report, both the New York Times and the LA Times followed up with similar articles disparaging the journalistic acumen of Gary Webb, but did nothing to build the possible things he could have unearthed.

In 1996, as conspiracy theory goes, the major papers went after the San Jose Mercury News because increased access to the then three most prominent centrist papers would be a huge career boon to those reporting. It is possible that the CIA specifically and the US government at large exercised this carrot. Unfortunately, this cannot possibly be the case for the NBA. Most NBA teams general management are not unified by the same incentives to protect ownership and management tactics/strategies of other teams. The NBA cannot offer more access, by in large, because with social media, players and teams can get it themselves. Also, last but not least, Pablo Torre walks through the bulk of his paper trail on camera with other experts as they parse the evidence.

For sports columnists of today to go after Pablo Torre and their team, they are going to have a much harder time than those who went after Gary Webb 30 years ago.

If the XFL can’t make a league profitable with the most watched sport and billions of dollars there is no way Steve Ballmer could do so either.
