Honestly, I think Jokic is too smart and laid back. He won his title, on his terms. He;s got the individual accolades. He doesn;t really HAVE to do anything. And he’s not blinded by fame and money like Giannis is to chase that one last high. I think he;s perfectly happy to keep playing in Denver as long as they pay him, and to retire on his own terms at some point.

I think we’re more likely to get Curry out of Golden State then we do getting Jokic out of Denver. And I think we have no shot at getting Curry out of California.

I’ll have to double check to see if that was the case in previous seasons, but it’s interesting/surprising to me that DWhite and PP have the same offensive and defensive role, and yet it’s never really affected them in terms of fit when they’re on the court together, we are always good with the pair of them. Do think part of that reason is that White can play multiple roles on defense.

So Tatum clearly wants to add the one leg runner three to his arsenal, and i am here for it.

I know that a lot of fans are rolling their eyes and want him to focus on getting to the rim, but i think people are underselling the risk/reward of getting that shot to work. Because if it doesn’t work, at worst it’s just a slightly worse step back. Not a huge opportunity cost.

But if he pulls it off, he will essentially have given himself Donavan Mitchel/steph curry like quick release coming off of screens, without having to become as quick on his feet as those guys (which isn’t possible for someone as big as he is). It takes away that half second of recovery time that defenses have been leaning on to clog the driving lanes against us the past few years.

It isn’t just a fun trick shot, it has the potential to actually change the way that he is defended.

When I posted that playoff WAR leaderboard by decade the other day, it occurred to me last night that all those guys won multiple rings in their decade (Magic - 3, MJ - 6, Duncan - 3, LeBron - 3). Even the runner-ups all ended up with multiple rings (Bird - 3, Scottie - 6, Kobe - 5, KD - *2 )

Right now JT is the leader, Jokic is 2nd, and nobody else relevant is really close at the minute given that we only have 3 years left in the decade, although we have to acknowledge that this is the parity era with the new CBA.

That being said, the last time Brad Stevens traded the longest tenured fan favorite for an oft-injured oft-chided player and 2 first round picks… we know what happened the next year. The caveat being that there was also a very important trade that happened later that summer that certified the title for most of us.

Except that you’re ignoring the elephant in the room, which is that Smart was already breaking down and KP had his best and probably most overlooked season in Washington while playing the most games he’d played in a long time.

Unless you squint very, very hard, that was not even remotely the same as JB for PG. The next trade would have to be an all-time banger for them to equalize what they did in the summer of 2023 but unless something goes totally wrong in Denver, Nikola Jokic is not walking through that door.

If you’re looking for good historical parallels, it’s the trade deadline deals for Aaron Gordon that Denver made in 2021 and the one Boston made for DWhite in 2022. Both teams won titles two seasons after they made those deadline trades.

Something I’ve been thinking about in a “flip Paul George” scenario is what other teams would be able to come up with $50-60M in expiring contracts for 2027-28 that would be equally as attractive to a team who wants to create cap space for 2028-29.

Knicks - KAT or Josh Hart + McBride (S&T at $28M). Realistically it’s just KAT. Like Jaylen Brown, KAT isn’t the best idea for a tank commander and I don’t see the Knicks moving him to have a huge hole at Center unless they’re getting an upgrade (Jokic). Idk why the Nuggets do this and the Knicks have only their 2033 1st rounder to trade.

Nets - MPJ + Mo Wagner/Keon Ellis + 1 other player. Technically don’t even know if this works because idk what “mutual agreement option” means on Spotrac and how that works as an expiring, but Brooklyn trying to pair a superstar with Randle and 3rd option Mann/Sharpe is not a contending team and idk why the Nets would give up picks for a “make the play-in” win now move.

Raptors - Kawhi + 1 other player if necessary. Kawhi is just going to choose a team in free agency or sign an extension in Toronto but I just don’t know where he would want to go. The most hilarious outcome is back with the Clippers but I could see him go to the Lakers since that was the original plan back in 2020 and they’ll want someone to pair Luka with.

Wizards - Anthony Davis. Washington has a few picks to play with too, that would be a competitive offer considering AD is always hurt and would be easy for a team to bottom out. But of the available players, Trae Young wouldn’t really fit. Curry is an obvious no, and a Trae + Jokic defense sounds like a disaster.

Heat - Giannis. Why would they give him up? That would make no sense after they just pulled off this big trade that cost their entire future of picks to get him there. They’ve hitched their wagon, will not be in the market to trade for another expensive star.

Pacers - Siakam, or Nembard + Zubac + Toppin. This one is interesting because the Pacers could try to upgrade from Siakam, or create a big 3 with Haliburton, Siakam and another star, but their depth has been such a strong point idk why they’d do the latter. Pacers can trade their 2027, 2031 and 2033 first rounders, but that kind of move would leave them with no tradeable firsts and if it doesn’t work, no path to a retool or rebuild except a fire sale

Bulls - Claxton + Powell + Collins. No idea why they’d get rid of the only talent they have besides Giddey and Wilson to add a max contract. This is like the Mavs where they had Flagg, AD and Kyrie and it was a disaster. This is like the Nets where they’re rebuilding and a win now move makes no sense

Mavericks - Kyrie + 1 other player. They have some draft picks to trade, and could be trying to land someone to pair with Flagg but don’t have a lot of other great role players. I guess they could try for Steph Curry as an upgrade, but imo that’s still not a contender and is such a short window it doesn’t make sense if they’re building around Flagg.

Rockets - Durant + Adams/Capela/Smart. Rockets have the contracts and picks to trade and I think could be in the mix for a star. Generally though, idk why a team would be trading for Durant if they want to blow it up. He’s still a productive player that’s not going to help a team tank, and I don’t get the vibe he wants to go to a team that’s aiming to rebuild. He’ll just opt out and sign to the team he wants to go to.

Grizzlies - Jerami Grant + Isaiah Stewart. The Grizzlies are rebuilding. Trading for a star after they just moved Morant and JJJ makes absolutely no sense.

Pelicans - Zion + DeAndre Jordan. Not quite $50M but close, and they have picks to trade. But not sure what Zion’s value is even for a team that’s trading an older star. I don’t really have a nuanced take on the Pelicans situation

Timberwolves - Rudy Gobert + 1 other player. Wolves already traded KAT and Naz Reid, trying to create a team with Ant, LaMelo, a 3rd guy with maybe no Center and only their 2029 first to trade doesn’t seem like they’ll be in the running for a big trade. LaMelo was their big move.

Nuggets - Jokic. Doesn’t make sense to trade arguably the best player in the league if the goal is to win now.

Trail Blazers - Morant + Avdija or Holiday + Lillard. The former makes no sense since they’ll be building around Avdija. Holiday is kind of interesting though, and Lillard to a 3rd team or something. Can definitely be in play for a big move, but not sure who exactly fits here with Avdija and Morant both being on ball guys. There aren’t many stars where you want to move anyone off ball and create some awkward fit for whoever the 3rd option is.

Kings - Sabonis. May need to throw in 1 more player, but easy enough to get there. The biggest problem with the Kings is they are terrible and are an organizational mess. Who would re-sign here long term? I just can’t see a team moving their star player for Sabonis to send them to basketball hell. It would be such a bad move for a franchise to move a beloved long-time player to the Kings to rot.

Clippers - Darius Garland + Hachimura/Jackson/Beal. I believe the Clippers can trade 2 of their own firsts and 3 others (Indiana, 2 from Toronto) but I don’t really get the point of this kind of move. Even if you traded say Garland and Isaiah Jackson and picks for Steph Curry, the Clippers would have Curry, Ingram, Hachimura, Beal, Lopez, DJJ and Keaton Wagler. I mean it’s a nice team but is that really a contender that can compete with OKC and San Antonio and worth giving up picks for? I think they’ll be discussed as a team in the mix because it’s LA and Ballmer but ultimately won’t make a huge move. They just traded Kawhi and if they were in the market for an expensive star, why not just keep him?

76ers, Hawks, Hornets, Magic, Pistons, Cavaliers, Bucks, Spurs, Thunder, Jazz, Warriors, Suns and Lakers don’t have $50M of expiring contracts, but a few teams could get creative to get there.

Ultimately, if a player is asking out or a team is looking to blow it up with a $50M+ star (Jokic, AD, Booker, Mitchell, Mobley, Murray, Fox, Adebayo, Doncic, Edwards, Haliburton, Curry S&T or at the deadline) and wants money expiring after 2027-28, besides the Celtics, the teams best equipped to make that kind of move seem like the Rockets, Trail Blazers, Wizards, Pelicans and maybe the Clippers, Mavs and Pacers.

Just something to think about for this year’s deadline and next summer with whoever requests a trade or whatever team decides it’s time to blow it up and will really value the cap space from moving on from their supermax player.

Why? Specifically, why expiring? That’s not necessary and artificially limiting the options.

Briefly, because I’m stepping on u/SquimJim’s turf, “expiring” is bad. No one wants expiring contracts in this CBA. Mostly because FA (and specifically RFA) has been de-fanged by the CBA.

Tradeable contracts - Derrick White, 30m sized contracts- is the “goal”. The ideal roster in this era has one max guy, four 25m borderline all stars, and then some sub-15m role players on the bench - all with 3 years remaining.

And in general, “working backward” like this (reductively listing similar contract values and existing reputations) isn’t how Brad is gonna approach this situation.

No one wants expiring contracts in this CBA. Mostly because FA (and specifically RFA) has been de-fanged by the CBA.

If FA is de-fanged that means fewer teams will build their offseasons around FA. If fewer teams build their offseasons around FA that means the teams with cap space will have more power to make moves.

It’s one of the main reasons these big trends in roster construction never seem to last. Trends can often create counter-trends.

10 years ago we were talking about the rise of smaller guards and the death of the big man. All that did was create opportunities for teams to load up on talented multi-big lineups. Now we’re talking about the rise of the big man and the death of the smaller guards.

Every team is given the same draft capital and cap space to work with. The only way you can get ahead is by bargains that other teams have overlooked. What that means is that once the league shifts its focus away from an area, that area becomes a massive opportunity for uncontested talent.

It’s dependent on the situation. For us, we don’t want expiring money next year because we aren’t creating cap space, we want to add money, and there are limits to adding money.

For other teams, it could be different. Maybe they want to create cap space. Cap space can still be valuable, as most teams tend to not have it nowadays, good and decent players still hit free agency, and having cap space can give you more leverage in sign+trades, as you can threaten signing a player outright (or trading for players with player options)

Some teams may want to cut money to dodge aprons/taxes, so an expiring contract helps them do that quicker.

There are more situations now where it no longer makes sense to have an expiring contract, but there are still situations where it definitely makes sense.

That’s the idea. And I’m thinking for a team like Golden State, who already have Curry, Butler and Draymond expiring this season, but obviously don’t want to let Curry walk for nothing, if they are having a disaster season, he could request a trade and be moved at the deadline. He would have complete control with veto ability to his trade and will indicate where he will re-sign. They don’t necessarily want someone for 3-4 years, and after missing out on Giannis and every other star as a last ditch win now move, they’re already quietly clearing their books and preparing for a post-Curry Warriors era where they’ll want picks to draft guys and space to sign others. They have by far the least amount of money on the books for next season and currently only 3 guys signed for 2028-29 (Yaxel Lendeborg, Gui Santos, Will Richards).

If they’re asking a team to come up with a bunch of expiring money to match for Curry, Boston is uniquely equipped to do that with Paul George’s $54M of it.

The competition would more likely be teams with a good young player and an expiring contract. For example, Blazers offer Jrue Holiday and Donovan Clingan. You get a mid-sized expiring and a great future young piece. Idk if they’d be willing to do that, but just offering that as a concept that could beat our offer. Or like JDub and Ajay Mitchell.

Something along those lines. I’m not saying those offers are out there, but can’t count them either

What if the offer is Paul George and Payton Pritchard? Or Paul George and 2 young wings? None of these guys are as good as JDub but I get the sense OKC is going to have a hard time committing long term money if they just dumped Dort and are moving JDub’s $48M AAV for Curry at a more expensive price. The 2nd apron is still relevant to them.

As far as Clingan I get it, but if Curry says he doesn’t want to play in Portland, they can’t really take that deal. Curry will have control over where he goes. Portland has Lillard, Morant and Henderson and Curry doesn’t seem like he’d be a great fit, Portland would need to rely on other moves being available and that might be enough to make Curry say there’s too much uncertainty if he wants to win. Who’s to say what the return is if they move Lillard or Morant? Is it enough?

Boston can very easily offer Paul George, Payton Pritchard, and hit the ground running for the playoffs 2 months after the deadline. They’d still have an 8-9 man playoff rotation of Tatum, Curry, White, Hauser, Robinson, Queta, Gonzalez, Scheierman, and Walsh. Guys like Garza, Harper and Conley as reserves if guys get into foul trouble/hurt or the matchup calls for it. Their roster doesn’t need many other moves to compete now and doesn’t hurt their plans for 2027-28 since the same money is on the books. They just fit Curry into the lineup, start Hauser or a young wing like Walsh or Hugo if they want more defense, and it fits.

They have control over their entire core through 2028-29 except a Scheierman extension, but they can easily re-sign Curry next summer to a sizable contract for 2-3 seasons, find a backup PG in free agency, and possibly stay under the 2nd apron during this entire win now window.

When the calculus is “well why wouldn’t they just keep Brown and Pritchard?” you have to consider a Pritchard extension will be expensive and this is actually a cheaper avenue while acquiring more top end talent for as long as you believe Curry can be productive for.

If you truly, truly believe in analytics and possession maximization, Curry replaces Pritchard (7-8 more PPG), Scheierman will replace Hauser, and Hugo + Walsh will replace Brown (need to combine 7-8 less PPG). You get around the same scoring and defense in totality at a cheaper cost.

I know some fans won’t be thrilled with a 38 year old and think this is just a move to lean more into 3’s because “Mazzullaball” without diving into the specifics or realizing what a guy like Curry off-ball can do for our ability to get to the rim, but I see the vision from a cap sheet and upgrading talent standpoint.

I really do think the Celtics are going to be the favorites to get him at the deadline if he requests a trade and agrees to re-sign here, but expect other teams to obviously be in on those talks too.

This is not who the Celtics would be trading for. This is who they would be competing with if other teams offered expiring contracts. The targets would be Jokic, Luka, Edwards, Curry, Booker, Mitchell, etc. who free up because they ask for a trade or a team decides they’re out of options and want to blow it up to rebuild. All these guys I just listed are, in my opinion, better than Brown (with the exception of Booker)

And based on my analysis, the teams we would be competing with to land these players, if the target team’s goal is cap space with expiring contracts, would be like 5-6 teams realistically, most out West. If a West team wants to send their star East and wants picks and to tank in return, their best options are Boston, Washington, Indiana, Brooklyn and Chicago. 2 of these teams a star with control (Jokic with player option) would say no to re-signing in Brooklyn and Chicago with the talent they have there and those teams would back out.

New York has no picks, Toronto can only offer Kawhi and that’s not a guy you acquire if you’re trying to tank, the Heat have no picks and can only offer Giannis, and the other 7 teams don’t have $50M+ of expiring money, they’d have to send guys who have multiple years left, and most of them wouldn’t offer any draft picks of any value since they’re all playoff teams or have none in the Bucks case.

If a team out West says “okay, we really want to send Jokic/Curry/Luka/Edwards East” and your options are the Wizards with Anthony Davis + picks, the Pacers with Siakam + 3 firsts or Zubac/Nembhard/Toppin + 3 firsts (which leaves the Pacers with no more tradeable picks and can not make any more moves), or the Celtics with Paul George + 1 player + picks, which trade helps a team bottom out the best and nets the most picks in return?

And for the star with control of their options are Trae Young + Dybantsa, Haliburton, or Tatum, who do you think they’re going to want to play with? The rookie, the guy coming off an Achilles in small market Indiana, or the guy coming off an Achilles who looked like the same guy, is a better player than these other guys, and is part of a constantly winning organization?

Of course, I’d really need to double check other team’s first round picks if they control others they can move, but Boston is at the top of list here. They are absolutely primed if a star asks out to be in on them because of their situation. I’d have to imagine we are among the favorites to land a guy like Curry if Golden State moves him at the deadline especially with his veto ability to any trade he doesn’t like.

I think that’s entirely up to him. He has a player option next year and has leverage over his situation. He could stay with Denver forever, ask to be traded, or retire and go raise horses. There’s not that many breadcrumbs regarding this situation to do more than speculate.

Someone like Steph Curry has a lot more noise to it. Golden State’s GM has mentioned they would honor a trade request from Curry, and they only have 3 players on the books for 2028-29. After missing out on Giannis and literally anyone to get him help to compete, they’re out of options. They are quietly moving on from the Curry era and starting over. Of the players expiring by summer of 2028, you have basically the list I’ve compiled above. There are no “bad” contracts to bottom out and tank besides Paul George, Zach LaVine and Sabonis. Curry can say no to the Kings, leaving us.

Jokic makes no sense if you’re trading Curry and Denver doesn’t want Steph without Jokic. They can try to move Butler though and that helps Denver bottom out, which I think can be a competitive offer.

Anthony Davis is too good to tank and Trae and Curry is a horrible fit, Washington will not be in on him.

Miami will not trade Giannis so soon to blow it up after depleting all their future picks, and no way in hell they take Butler back as the return.

New York will extend Towns

Toronto did not trade for Kawhi for another 1 year rental.

Houston I think will be interested but Golden State doesn’t want a Curry for Durant swap, he won’t help them bottom out. And offering Butler is horrible spacing for the Rockets, they won’t agree on either deal.

Idk what Harden plans to re-sign to but he may not be expiring by 2028.

Morant, Curry is an awkward fit in Portland with all their guards.

Zion, Curry says no being left to rot in New Orleans, they are not contenders.

Same with Michael Porter Jr in Brooklyn, Curry says no.

Garland, ehh I think LAC will be a rumored team but Golden State has to believe Garland is the guy they’re building around. He’ll want a new contract and I don’t think he’s a 1st option kind of player. Ingram doesn’t work because a Curry/Garland backcourt is too much overlap and wouldn’t be a winning team.

Dallas maybe, Kyrie and Klay return to GS could work, but Curry, Flagg and not much else in Dallas doesn’t feel that competitive and he might be hesitant to sign off on being sent there.

Phoenix could do it with Jalen Green and Miles Bridges, but does Curry think a team of him, Booker and Brooks can win? Phoenix also doesn’t have that many picks they can trade.

Charlotte will be in on him. Coby White + Brandon Miller + Grayson Allen is $56M and Curry makes $62M. I think they can try for it and Curry can play for his hometown team, and was part of the reason they moved LaMelo.

Overall, if Golden State’s goal is to clear cap space over the next 2 seasons and go into a rebuild, if they move Curry at the deadline, the teams that I believe can make legitimate offers that both Golden State and Curry agree to are the Celtics, Hornets and Clippers. If Golden State tries to offer Denver Jimmy Butler and picks for Jokic and Denver says no, they’ll pivot to moving Curry and the offers will basically be

- Brandon Miller, Coby White, Grayson Allen + picks (+1 player maybe)

- Darius Garland, Rui Hachimura + picks (+1 player maybe)

- Paul George, Payton Pritchard (or 1-2 young wings) + picks

Curry will get to choose if he wants to play with a running mate of Knueppel, Ingram, or Tatum.

Or Golden State keeps him and lets him retire on deteriorating teams like Kobe did.

These seem like the most likely scenarios to me just canvassing the league and what every team has to offer.

There’s 3 big names (Curry, Jokic, and Giannis) and like 3-4 (Durant, Kawhi, Butler, and AD) fall back options you could target and that’s not including guys like Doncic/Edwards who could put pressure due to their own contract stuff or RFAs like Brandon Miller

Which is why I’m gonna suggest giving the W a chance. Yes, you’ve probably heard a bunch of off court BS about the W recently, which is too bad because the basketball is pretty darned good. Not great. But better than summer league replays, for sure.

Olivia Miles is really good and entertaining! Paige Bueckers is fun! A’ja Wilson is an amazing talent who is equal parts Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon.

I don’t do teams with the W. Like Euro soccer, I’m a “game enthusiast” with no defined rooting interest. I find it equally satisfying to see the Aces win or get their asses kicked. They’re the big bad.

Dallas and Minnesota are reliably entertaining whenever I see their games.

The WNBA is a joke for not having a Boston or New England branded team. It’s like they don’t want us to watch. There’s a bunch of people who would have gotten into it if they had given us a team. They started with nothing, then gave us a Connecticut team?!?!?!? and then took it away anyway.

Bunch of amateurs for a supposedly professional sports league if you ask me.

Yup this season is a gap year. We’ll be fairly competitive in the reg season so it won’t feel like it but next year is when we really look to compete.
