I mean, while I don’t think it had a bearing on the seeming Kawhi decision, if they DID come down hard on the Clippers they were going to have to bring the hammer down on the Bucks, as well. They don’t seem to have found a smoking gun PROVING that the team directly facilitated Kawhi’s payment schemes even if we all know they were involved. If the league moved on a death-penalty style punishment for the Clippers for cap circumvention without a smoking gun, you’ve created a precedent… so the Bucks (and all the other teams doing the same to a lesser extent) would all be subject to that same precedent. In that sense, it was inevitable Silver was going to try to find a diplomatic answer to all of this. This was a can of worms they didn’t want to open, but I’m sure the private conversations are much less diplomatic.

After he took over, we had what looked like a Ballmer overpay for Clippers, but then we’ve also had Hawks for \(850m, Jazz for \)1.7b, Wolves for \(1.5b, Rockets \)2.2b, Nets \(3.3b, Bucks \)3.5b, Mavs \(3.8b, Suns \)4b, Celtics \(6.1b, and Lakers for \)10b, then flipped in less than a year for $12b.

He’s helping to ruin the fan experience and the quality of the game, definitely fucked the integrity of it too….but at the end of the day, it’s a hobby for us, but a business for 30 uber-rich dickheads who only see the bottom line. I want to fully reserve judgment until we see what happens with Ballmergate. I think Silver and the league office would be completely out to lunch to give Ballmer a slap on the wrist here because EVERYONE with a working brain and even a modicum of critical thinking skills knows that this is cap circumvention.

But it would be especially out of touch to brush this away when the NBA has just been trying to dig itself out of both a gambling scandal (Chauncey/Rozier etc) and also tanking scandals which further bring the integrity of the game into disrepute. This scandal further brings the integrity of the game into question if one team can circumvent the cap and more or less get away with it excusing it as “failure to supervise” as if they didn’t knowingly facilitate these side deals in the name of circumvention.

Again, I want to reserve judgment because I think the optics would be SO bad that they really can’t afford to go lenient on this, as badly as they want to. I will also disagree on the Lakers sale being sketch as much as I dislike the Kushner fam. The only way it can be construed as a sweetheart deal to make Walter’s DOJ troubles to go away is if it’s sold at below Fair Market Value. But the new owners are paying 25% more only a year later and without the attraction and eyeballs and merch sales that LeBron brings. It’s not an underpay. Eyes need to remain focused on the Clippers.
