That teams are worth what someone is willing to pay- even if that team doesn’t own the building that they play in and have a long lease.

If anything, this probably tells the initial price was cheap and was probably done just because Jeanie found the perfect deal for herself. If Dolan for some reason decided to cash in on the Knicks he would get $20 billion easily.

One important piece of context here is that the team is only for sale because the league fucked up allowing the sale to Walter in the first place. In fact, every time Walter bought something in the last 15 years, he was basically using someone else’s money without their knowledge much of the time (to my understanding). The Lakers wouldn’t be available if Walter’s house of cards wasn’t collapsing and Iger/Kushner had not been in hot pursuit of the Las Vegas team already.

So while the valuation was insane, the flipping of the franchise was circumstantial. Someone who is apparently a financial criminal of some talent acquired the Lakers and suddenly needed to liquidate them due to impending forfeiture of his assets - right as the league is taking bids for two expansion teams, so it had buyers lined up already.

Chisholm could probably flip the Celtics for 8.5 and make a couple billion.

I think the money they are playing now are from Cypto, AI, oil and arms deal. These are just dirty money they are funneling into sports to make it looks legit.

Think they will eventually hit a valuation that will severely limit potential buyers. At the very least, I think this Walter thing is just the first of some owners in the future not being able to afford to run the team. At some point, I think someone will be able to negotiate to buy a team at less than value in which case, it might cause a domino affect from reduced TV deals, etc.

He’s selling over-value to his friends, and then they’re gonna make some other lowkey deal when he gives back some of that money.

There’s no rationale reason why the franchise would have increased 25% in value in about a year, especially when Walter basically didn’t even negotiate the sell.
