Their social life is going to be totally different from the average person. Realistically they’re going to spend their lives around people who were either homeschooled or schooled at very exclusive places.

There’s theories out there that social skill isn’t necessarily public/private school vs homeschool/amish/mennonite/etc but more cultural like were you allowed to watch these shows, movies or listen to this style music. SpongeBob being one of the main flagships. A homeschooled kid who could watch SpongeBob was socially normal as an adult compared to a public school kid banned from watching it.

The point isnt that SpongeBob is good but more that the parents of public schooled or homeschooled who prevented it also sheltered in other ways that restricted social growth and for whatever reason those sheltered families consistently banned SpongeBob as well as many other things.

That’s what college is for.

I don’t necessarily share that opinion, but at that income level they could probably employ a very high quality 1 on 1 teacher full time that should run circles around the average stay at home mom that homeschools (no offense to those moms)

During the pandemic parents from wealthy communities were willing to pay for a full-time private teacher and help their bubble. 3-4 kids that they met with daily for 4-6 hours. They had a room, garage, or guest house renovated to be a class room.

So with money, things can be different.

I am generally not a fan of homeschooling but the people who are doing it well set up a lot opportunities for the students to engage with other homeschooled kids or kids in regular schools.

I work in a regular public high school and I’ve had a few students over the years who were like “I’m homeschooled but I want to take this one AP class here and I want to do theater here”

Also I’ve planned a lot of field trips to cool places like mit and the homeschoolers are always taking up all the time slots.

I bet Schroders kids are getting a good education

Because instead of the mom/dad teaching you can hire real professionals and socialize the kids in other ways… it’s not that complicated

Consistency is key for children especially if they are moving every single year… homeschooled isn’t the worst outcome here. I’m sure his kids interact with other players kids sports parks etc etc

Former homeschooler (k-12) here. 

What you’re saying is just a variation of what I’ve heard my whole life, and it’s mostly nonsense. People homeschool for all sorts of reasons — could be religion, could be moving around a lot, could be for control over the curriculum, could be that the kid gets picked on at school. I grew up with kids that fell in to all of those categories. I will say, many of the awkward homeschooler kids that I grew up around were homeschooled because they were picked on, and some were developmentally challenged. Most of them were taught by ill equipped parents, but it was that or get bullied. 

Yes, counter-culture education also has a massive stake in homeschooling, but those kids actually usually do grow up in communities unless they’re like, homesteading. The Christian homeschoolers in my area growing up had a massive group that had sports leagues, prom, and a graduation ceremony. Probably not a cool group of kids lol, but they get their interactions. I didn’t belong to that group and I still had public-schooled friends.

Anyways — I would never homeschool my kids and find the practice to be super problematic, but not at all for the reasons you’re describing. What you’re describing is a trope.
