They aren’t doing sports journalism, they are bowing to Balmer to just get paid.
I think ESPN Is pro Balmer, the NBA isn’t happy they reported that they have no evidence.
There’s no benefit for the NBA actually finding fault here. They’re both on the same team, whether they say it outwardly or not.
Everybody already knows the fault is already found. The benefit the NBA is looking for is how do they punish the Clippers as little as possible while trying to save face with fans and pretend they’re a serious league.
Silver at least wants to slap Ballmer on the wrist a little to bit to try and salvage some credibility, Ballmer doesn’t even want to do that and is using the ESPN to try and turn the tide more his way.
I’m not sure I agree. There’s 29 other owners that are potentially hurt should the NBA incorrectly find the Clippers to be innocent. There’s also a real chance that if they find them innocent and enough fans are disgusted by it, that it could start to effect their ratings/ bottom lines. I know I was wondering if I’d still be watching when I first saw the headline from ESPN and hadn’t yet seen that the NBA denounced the report.
Oh yeah, billionaires hold billionaires accountable all the time.
The owners don’t give a shit if they win, look at Portland. As long as they’re making money they’re good. Whatever is best for the league, is best for the owners. People will still watch. Be for real.
Teams tend to make a lot more money when they’re winning. Even a purely cynical view on the league should lead you to the conclusion that teams would prefer to win than not win. If they didn’t care about winning, there wouldn’t need to be rules about whether you can circumvent the cap for players lol.
If the league sets the precedent that this behavior is ok, it could become open season. If that happens and more of these deals receive journalistic coverage, that can only be bad for the league’s image and in the entertainment industry your image is everything.

Think that out for a second. The salary cap exists so owners don’t overspend and get more money in their pockets. The reason why they would be overspending otherwise is why exactly?
You have guys like Balmer, then you have guys like Sarver and now overleveraged Ishbia, Dundon and the Adelsons. You have Walter who was bringing the Lakers organization into the modern era with fraudulent money, and another that’s war profiteering, and then Dolan. They all suck, and the players are having their earnings potential limited by an arbitrary cap by these …. while team valuations are exploding by billions of dollars. The whole shit is stupid
You’re avoiding the question. If the cap is there to limit spending so they can keep more money in their pockets, what’s the motivation for why they would be spending more in the first place?
Ok you can name about 5 teams that don’t care about winning but I can name about 25 that do care.

The problem wasn’t introducing him to a sponsor. Players have sponsorships all the time, through the league, through the teams. Would any player doing a local ad for a business be in trouble? No. It’s that it was undisclosed, secret endorsement where Kawhi didn’t actually do anything for the company, which was part owned by Balmer himself. It was clearly to circumvent the salary cap.
I thought the quotes conveyed the sarcasm. This is what the Clippers are saying they did. They only introduced Kawhi to potential sponsorships.
They didn’t say they had no evidence, just no “direct evidence of balmer funnelling money to kawhi Leonard through sponsors”.
This is balmers entire defence that Marc Cuban was trying to make last year. There’s no smoking gun from balmer saying “use this money to pay kawhi”
He’s trying to separate it into two diffeernt arguments - that he got scammed / was an investor and the companies independently made these deals, so kawhi gets the brunt of the blame
