Funny you mention that, a friend of mine works for the Lakers said that Magic’s failures as an executive probably stemmed from his success outside of his exec role. Basically, successful executives seem to excel at finding edges–and are willing to work day and night to accomplish that.

Chris Paul has made over $400M as a player. Maybe he has a drive that extends beyond personal wealth, but my guess is that he probably won’t grind like Sam Presti, Greg Popovich and others did

Shaq was really the only major free agency signing I can think of until LeBron. I’m leaving Karl Malone and Gary Payton out of this because they signed basically one year deals at the end of their careers. They were not major acquisitions at the time we got them. It’d be like signing PG today.

Kobe was a draft day trade, Pau was a trade, Dwight howard and Steve Nash were trades, Anthony Davis was a trade, Luka was a trade. Going further back, Kareem and Bob McAdoo were trades.

Magic, Cooper, Worthy, Scott, Nixon, etc were all drafted.

This is the take. Pelinka has had some clunkers (Westbrook) and some big W’s (Luka). I even chalk up what he did to get out of Westbrook and the team he gathered around them a big W. But there are a lot of asterisks and questions on how of his moves were really his or not..

But ultimately he built a championship team, an also ran team and now a retooled team. He was above average but not exceptional.

I think our defense will be good enough to be at least average this year. We had a functional defense last year with a 41 year old lebron and 32 year old Marcus smart as our best defenders. Now we’re younger, have a strong interior defender, and more depth on paper. I think JJ can pull it off.

I have no idea how we’ll do in the playoffs, but there’s enough to be optimistic about. I’d rather have our team than say, the Nuggets for example.

I was trying to figure this part out as well.

Maybe they wouldn’t have had the all the votes at the time of original sale because she hadn’t fired all of them yet and they still wanted to be nominally involved with the Lakers. But after that, seems like it would have been possible to vote to sell at any time.

I’m guessing they were all enjoying some of the perks of being minority owners plus Jeanie having the written agreement with Walter maybe meant that them selling wouldn’t have as clear as an impact.

As I was writing this comment, Jeanie Buss’ lawyer put out a statement, which suddenly makes this clearer. Jeanie had, up to this point, likely used the same argument the lawyer is using now so the other Buss siblings maybe believed or weren’t sure if they could legally sell without Jeanie’s approval. She then called an emergency meeting before the Iger sale was public to try and change the trust without telling the other siblings about the impending sale.

The meeting basically revealed she thought she might have been vulnerable to such a move because of the new sale, which the other siblings promptly found out about. And it was one more betrayal by her to not let the siblings know what was happening which was maybe the final straw.

yeah this reads as the scenario to me and not anything to do with money. if they wanted money they could’ve sold last year for $1.3B each and been done with the team, but they opted to keep the minority stake to keep some of the perks of ownership while Jeannie was running the team. she then cut them all out and i think sued each one of them during the course of the last year and they now have the opportunity to sell at a 25% increase from what they were considering before, and they cashed out to spite her.
