Part of the problem too is I don’t think there’s enough outrage among the players about Kawhi. The union and membership should be seething but I get the sense they just aren’t. He is directly harming their interests and violating the rules of the brotherhood he is part of. If it is normalized for star players to make serious money in backroom deals, those star players may be less inclined to lend their voice to the unions fight in the next contract negotiation because they know they’re getting paid more off the books, why should they care or anger the owners by fighting for higher salaries? Crossing the line here to break ranks and conspire with ownership appears to just be seen as “Kawhi was just trying to get paid.” without any recognition that this is the type of crack that can start to add up and break the foundation if it isn’t stopped.

All the big sports seem to have lost the solidarity that just a couple generations ago got them the union in the first place.
