Because they would rebound the fucking shit out of it back in the day. World class bricklayers playing with the likes of Wilt, Bill, Moses, Bob Petit, etc… The game is literally too good for anyone to ever come close. There’s not enough misses.

Dennis Rodman is the greatest rebounder of the modern era. His highest season he averaged 18.7 rebounds per game, notably insane. In 1962 ALONE, 4 players matched or exceeded that. It was just so different.

The lane was smaller, there was no 3 second rule and there was no 3 point shot, and zone D. Rodman played in a era with rules against all four. So a very different dynamic. The man was insane. He would have had 30 rebounds a game in that era.
