The short answer is, they’re haters. Not in the sense that they dislike JB necessarily, but in the sense that so many people just love to talk shit about other people. Drives me nuts that’s what people reduce themselves to.

Guarantee none of them have listened to a full talk from JB, or know anything about what he’s talking about beyond the Instagram reel they’re commenting on, and transparently neither do it.

Probably 1% of people in this thread could give the talks that JB does simply because getting on stage and orating isn’t easy.

Now, I haven’t listened to JBs actual “academic” talks. I watched some of his streams which are practically a comedy sketch.

I can’t speak to how “smart” he is, but he’s always seems like an advocate for his community, and that matters more to me than his number of finished degrees.

I also think there is a bit of racism going on here too tbh. I’m not a “can’t say anything bad about a black person” type of guy, but seems like a lot of the comments come from the “just play basketball” crowd.

JB isn’t asking those folks to watch and listen to his talks or whatever, he doesn’t talk about it on the court. The attention is brought to him because he has a platform and is advocating for things he cares about.

I’m not going to fault a guy for that, regardless of whether I agree with him or not.

Everyone understood what he said, it sounded like every corporate meeting anyone has ever attended.

It’s not about understanding it it’s about it being meaningless slop.

Big props to JB for caring about and getting involved in big issues. In terms of content though, it would be a (generous) C level presentation for an early undergrad class (if the topic was to talk about climate change awareness and motivating people to take action), not exactly a profound lecture.
