Yeah, the league lucked out. Their dominance would have been extended probably until even now if they hit on those picks better. Steph needed himself a young star player in the mix.

People still don’t realize the impact Jerry West had on the warriors those years he was there. His departure changed a lot.

Draymond and Klay weren’t gracious as vets, they viewed the new guys as a threat to their playing time, relevance, and ultimately their future job security.

Two timelines only works if you have complete buy-in or you’re willing to ruthlessly part with expiring beloved stars. But I think they would have stifled any rookie, no matter how talented.

It still wouldn’t be as expected. Superteams significantly limits touches to young players. Then they don’t develop the same.

Getting it in the Covid year turned out to be a real detriment. Really though we were just desperate for a true center. Something we never had since bogut got injured.

Even if we knew Halliburton was going to be an all star they’d rather gamble on getting a starting center since we were still loaded at guard at the time.

The better world was to use those picks to upgrade their roster.

Teams weren’t biting. Minnesota was rumored to want to move down too. Think covid had teams gunshy about their evaluations.

It’s interesting to me that players believe their workouts are that consequential. Tells me I underrated their importance.

They tried but teams were just too weirded out by the weirdness of the Covid draft and didn’t offer up much.

Allegedly they tried, but no one was offering anything real to move up. No one was really high on anyone in that draft because there was so little game tape to go off of.

Yeah, there was nothing wrong with the strategy. The problem was 100% execution. You can’t draft Wiseman then say the problem was thinking that you could have two different timelines.

We also could’ve taken Sengun instead of Moody though I regret that pick far less

It’s correct to say that the GSW and Minny were trying to trade out of their spots because the top three were looking iffy coming into the draft. A lot of red flag between “Does Ant like basketball? He played in the SEC.” Wiseman only played 4 collegiate games. LaMelo was jacking up shots in Australia.

I know the Hawks were trying to move up from 6. The packages (mind you this is 2020) that Minny wanted was 6 + John Collins + Kevin Huerter + some future capital in the ballpark of 1 unprotected first. Maybe throw in Cam Reddish or Hunter as alternatives (both coming off rookie seasons) In hindsight, for Ant that’s an obvious steal.

The top 3 picks, maybe bar 3, were gettable by a decent amount of reporting at the time. Having real reporting that 1 was on the table for a package that was built around 6 and mid to high end (at the time) role players should convey the at the time sentiment

It’s just opinions at the end of the day. You shouldn’t be afraid to draft a guy that fits you perfect just because his draft range is 7-13 and you have the #2 pick.

It’s hard to project big man prospects into the Warriors system, they need to be super high IQ to really excel and that’s very rarely clear in a 19 year old 7 footer. Draymond and Bogut and Looney were all top-tier BBIQ players for their positions and they excelled despite physical limitations, meanwhile your best case scenario for a super athlete who can’t follow that game speed and complexity is basically JaVale McGee, setting screens and catching lobs for 15 minutes a game.

Which was still nice for them to have and Wiseman couldn’t even manage that, but it’s not exactly what you want out of your second overall pick even if he managed it.

They based that draft off of high school clips and size. He wasn’t developed, it was a bad decision

Hindsight is always ²⁰⁄₂₀. This is not an excuse, but Wiseman would have been taken at 2 or at worse 3 by most teams. It was Ant, Wiseman and Lamelo draft and then everyone else.
