Why would it be fine to do the same things to other players? Sometimes it just takes time for voters to catch up to how good a player is, Kawhi won dpoy in 2015 after building a reputation as an elite defender from the 2014 finals.

He was already the same caliber of defender in 2014 but the voters just didn’t realize it. Reputation tends to effect these awards so I just think it’s better to evaluate players based on how good they actually were for the season rather than accolades.

Kawhi didn’t deserve to be any DPOY before 2015, it’s genuinely confusing because the best example for this would be Green.

I think you’re mixing it up with Draymond it was 2015 where he deserved it as he actually got more first place votes then Kawhi but I think some voters didn’t even have him on their ballot because he didn’t build that level of a reputation yet.

He was better the next year but he was already at an all star and all nba level the previous regular season is my point! The media and the fans who voted for the all-nba and all star game at the time weren’t quite caught up to how good he was. Curry building that reputation in 2013 helped him in accolades the following season.

My point with Kawhi is that I believe he was just as good of a defender in 2014 relative to where he was in 2015. He went from second team on defense and not being in the dpoy convo at all, to winning the award itself.

I mean, you should also note that Curry’s 44 came in a game where he played 58 minutes in a double-OT game. He had 38 in regulation, with 28 in the second half alone, so it would still be the most points against the Spurs that postseason.

But he was also kind of mediocre the rest of the series against them (18ppg, 36% from the field, 33% from three for Games 2 through 6).

As far as All-NBA that year, he still got the most votes of any guard who didn’t make the team. You could argue he should have gotten 3rd team over Wade, but it was a toss up between them. Wade had reputation and seniority and Curry still wasn’t quite the dynamic player we know him as from 2015 onwards.

In 2013 Steph Curry led the Warriors past a 57 win Nuggets team with their All Star David Lee missing the series due to injuiry. In game 1 of the following round Curry drops 44 and 11 assists against a top 3 defense featuring Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan.
