My pet theory is that the relationship between JB and the Celtics was also somewhat fractured beyond repair. Between JB’s public expressions insinuating his desire to lead a team or feel more “valued,” his ostensible unhappiness from being put into Giannis trade talks, his comments during and after the season, etc. – it just seemed like the JB/Celtics relationship was deteriorating.

So my belief is that the trade was motivated by a confluence of factors: his hefty contract, the flaws in his game that have been oft-discussed (shooting/decision-making/playmaking/off-ball defense/etc.), and fractures in his relationship with the team. It felt like going into next season with JB on the roster wasn’t something the Celtics could see going well.

I think the reports said White is better at his role than Brown was at his role. Not that White is outright better Brown.

PG isn’t expecting a supermax extension like JB was though. That’s a significant thing to consider too when building long term. I juste don’t think Stevens was willing to keep paying Brown top5 player money for a top25 production, as good as he was it just handcuffs you when it comes to building around it

25% of the production of JB? He outplayed JB in the most recent playoff series. He may compliment JT slightly better if he can stay healthy as well even if he is temporary.

The Clippers pick was almost unarguably the best pick moved this summer.

He has 2 years left. After this year he’ll be on a 57 million expiring contract. That’s super valuable with the way the current cba works. That will also give them flexibility to sign a high caliber FA. Brad is one of the top GMs in the league for a reason.

Jaylen Brown is not a superstar

Jaylen Brown has an extra year on his deal and was almost certainly going to ask for a max extension. PG will be an expiring after next season, which is gonna be easier for them to offload. The very obvious plan is punt the next 2-3 seasons in hopes of building a contender by then

Well isnt the entire premise of Brad Stevens(and people who support this trade )that moving JB would open up flexibility for the future? If that is indeed the case then I’d argue that Brad Steves was “metaphorically” looking into a crystal ball and projecting out a timeline that would be better than one with Jaylen Brown. Which given the recent events I’d say isn’t looking good, but time will tell I guess.

Sure, but its a lot easier to build depth around the margins of a great team than to find another Finals MVP

I think everyone agrees with that. The issue with the trade is

A) They got worse. If they don’t make that trade they are a top 3 team in the East going into the season and a finals contender. Not only are they not that now they basically handed the Sixers the ability to say the same thing.

B) they are in Tatums prime. Why waste years getting worse in the near term. This was a move of a tanking team but when you have a first team all nba caliber guy you should be surrounding them with the best talent now.

C) the return is just terrible. They could have gotten that return last year, at the all star break, or next season. Why do it now and not wait to see if a better trade develops. The trade did nothing to make them deeper

It still makes no sense other then just dumping Browns contract but when you take back an even worse contract it just makes you scratch your head

The only way to win a championship is to sign Jokic. Name one other path to contention.

The Celtics are clearing the way for that to happen. Who else is going to have the space to pick up Jokic when he becomes available?

Depth is important but star power ultimately still wins. The celtics had 2 stars. Finding solid enough depth would’ve been an easier job than finding another star next to tatum. And I thought we were doing a decent job of that by signing mitchell robinson, then we pivoted and decided to throw next season away instead.

Tatum and depth is not winning anything. Trading for a star player that is good enough to put the celtics into title contention this time next year is a long shot. Ultimately the jaylen brown trade will just lead to a jayson tatum trade and a full on rebuild in the next 2-3 years

I don’t why people keep defending this trade by saying you can’t pay Brown and Tatum 70% of the cap and then ignore that Paul George is owed 33% of the cap for the next two seasons. They are going to spend nearly 70% of cap on just two players next season regardless. They just switched Brown for George.

Betting on PG health in BIG 2027 is gotta be something.
