My college professor grew up in Philly in probably the 50s. He was white and grew up in a mostly black neighborhood. He always explain how he didn’t know he was white and his friends were black. as in, he didn’t know it was a topic around the country. Skin color was no different to hair color to them.

Some of the least racist groups of people I’ve ever met grew up in the whitest strongholds of SoCal, and some of THE most racist people I’ve ever met grew up in ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ public schools in other places.

I think the WNBA situation is much more complicated than “white players are good.” The league has always had good white players - Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, Diana Taurasi, Katie Smith, and Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers and Sabrina Ionescu right now. Caitlin Clark has been targeted since day one for becoming the face of the league without ever playing a game, Sophie Cunningham is catching flack for much more obvious reasons. She’s not even particularly a good player either. But each have either outwardly spoken against social issues and LGBTQ issues the league wholy believes in, or have stayed quiet during them, in Clark’s case.

Speaking generally, if you’ve been in the league and have helped shape it and some new girl comes along and gets crowned before stepping foot on your court, that’s not going to go over well for any race or any gender at the highest level. Clark achieving that status likely helped from being white and ESPN specifically lifting her up for it, but she hasn’t done anything to integrate herself with the league as whole, and her silence on specific things haven’t done her favors either. Again Breanna Stewart is in the same league with the same women and likely has the views JJ does here. She stood with her league-mates to support Black Lives Matter and founded Unrivaled to help her colleagues as a whole. Paige Bueckers literally hit the streets to protest George Floyd’s killing, among other public displays of support.

So like I said, I think it’s still much more complicated than that, but there are currently good white players in the WNBA that aren’t catching heat, and like JJ said, they’re just doing the right things that come naturally to supporting those around you.
