Bro, it’s funny bc we all seen the writing on the wall after that. It was already building up. I know SAS tries to play it like he was carrying Max, and that max wasn’t entertaining. But, I’ll always think it’s bc max stepped on Stephen A’s first attempt at a pivot into political commentary, only I think at that time he wanted to be the voice of the black community, and a leading progressive figure. But…..Max was just more knowledgeable, had better positions, and was able to articulate himself better when it came to those positions. And, it became clear SAS was out of his depth when it came to those topics. And Stephen A eventually figured out it’s a hell of alot easier to position yourself as a “common sense” centrist with conservative talking points.

People who love one thing (in this case sports) that they have a fantastic job in only pivot into politics if they suck at the sports part or are grubby people. Knowing that, Max being the educated one and not going into political stuff makes sense and SAS being the money grubber adds up.
Max was wiping the floor with SAS in their debates and was clearly leagues ahead of him as a sports journalist/personality by the time SAS decided to get rid of him. Max may have had his roots in covering boxing but he was able to branch and grow his knowledge and develop interesting, seemingly informed takes on all the sports and topics they discussed and SAS stayed stagnant and he became insecure that max was elevating his game
Is that what happened? I listen to zero SAS and almost zero media intrigue but have heard some Kellerman and he’s discussed it pretty tactfully.

Yeah. This is where you could REALLY see the rift form between them, after this SAS would try and dismiss whatever argument Max would make or act like he’s just an idiot rather than a peer for a majority of the time.
I actually liked the SAS and Max pairing, but Max was done dirty because of SAS’s ego and insecurity.

And if that wasn’t bad enough he then doubled down that Ohtani needing a interpreter “contributes to harming the game” Now 4 MVP’s later, 2 back to back championships as well as a NLCS MVP, SAS couldn’t have been anymore wrong.
But you see the difference in takes? Max’s take is a little too pessimistic whilst SAS’s is completely unhinged considering the trajectory Ohtani was on at the time and throw in a dash of racism and you get a typical SAS hot take.

I’m an NABJ member and work in sports media as well. I also don’t care for him. But in my opinion, the org should’ve just left him alone because it’s unserious. It also comes across as weird because he was present at our convention (he was/is a member?) two years ago and a lot of our members were excited to see him do a live taping of First Take and learn from him about his craft. I just don’t think he should’ve gotten this type of attention from the org because we all know he doesn’t care… and even if he does, he’s gonna give our org bad press since he’s the saltiest man on earth!
