Amar’e HOF Speech - On playing in New York
TIL Amar’e is a HOF
WHAT?!
NBA hall of fame means nothing. They let anybody in.
*Basketball HOF. Not NBA
oh yeah surely his Israel league contributions are making a huge difference here. Plus factor in his AAU and pick up games at the Y? Dude totally still doesn’t deserve shit. And yes Knicks flair.
He’s good enough to get in at the current bar. He also gave a shitload to the Knicks. The line is pretty much Joe Johnson. If you’re better than Joe you get in
Joe Johnson was neve an MVP candidate like Amare, but I’d easily argue he has a better basketball career
Joe made one more all star game and 4 less all NBA teams which matter way more. Amare also made 1st team once and 2nd four times. Joe made the 3rd
I also watched. Amare dominated games more than Joe did purely off eye test. And I loved Joe Johnson’s game
How does winning 3 championships during his time in the Israeli league not contribute? I agree he shouldn’t have been first ballot
Who gives a fuck about the Israeli league. Especially if a washed Stoudamire was balling.
12/6/0 in palestine in 2 seasons played. so 0 contribution to one season, 6 games in another (read: 0 contribution) and close enough to zero in another
Are you being deliberately dense on purpose? It was 19 playoff games in the Israeli Cup and 6 playoff games in the Israeli League. They don’t do Best of 7 like the NBA: it’s single game elimination in the Cup and best 3 in the IL. So no, he was a very active player during his time there.
oh shit 6 games of 9/6/1 has definitely changed my mind on all of this. when can i kiss the wall?
Yes, stats are significantly lower than the NBA. The NBA’s the greatest basketball league in the world lol.
Nazi is big mad Amare is in the Hall
“this guy was not a great NBA player and a worse international player”
“NAZZZZZIIIIII, NAZI DETECTED!!!!! THIS MAN WAS ASSOCIATED WITH ISRAEL SO IF YOU SPEAK TRUTHFULLY ON HIM YOU ARE A NAZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIII”
He’s a 6 time all star with 5 all nbas , most of them being second teams and one first team, he also has a rookie of the year and also has quite a bit of international accolades, I don’t see how he doesn’t deserve it
He deserves it for sure, just not First Ballot. Idk why this sub thinks the Basketball Hall of Fame is lenient compared to others – Sterling Sharpe made the Pro Football Hall of Fame and he didn’t have a Jerry Rice career lol.
The Football Hall of Fame is not the Baseball Hall of Fame, but it is certainly harder to get into the Football HOF than Basketball. To suggest otherwise (with a Sterling Sharpe example) is dishonest.
They shortened the waitlist years (from five to four to three) that coincided with potentially weak classes if they had not done so, but the official reason was “under the guise of making sure the players stay relevant and fresh in the mind of fans.”
And Sterling Sharpe had to wait decades. He was on a Hall of Fame track that was clear (which is funny you mentioned Rice because he was the only guy who managed to get the triple crown as a receiver during Rice’s heyday). Probably more so than Penny Hardaway has been in his respective sport. With Gale Sayers and later Terrell Davis getting in (which some people were upset about the latter) it, it was inevitable that he would given his production.
What equivalent to a Torry Holt is not in the Basketball HOF? Or even Hines Ward or Chad Johnson caliber (those latter two not quite being worthy imo)?
Thank you for explaining perfectly because I was gonna go off on buddy for him brining up Sterling Sharpe lol
Your counterargument to the Football HoF being harder than Basketball HoF is listing multiple players in the Football one that you don’t think deserve it lol?
What I was trying to say was that there are players who are all-pro/pro-bowlers in the NFL who aren’t in the hof and probably won’t get in (Cam Newton is another name that slipped my mind but he probably won’t get in. Derrick Rose likely will). That’s less likely to happen for basketball’s hof. And you won’t have people not get in because of backlogs in position (which happens especially to wide receivers, as Cris Carter had to wait six years despite being second to Rice in receptions and TD catches when he retired).
Cam won’t get in because the Pro Football only looks at NFL career. If it was like the Naismith and incorporated college play as well, then he’d definitely get in.
Rose is tough b/c MVP holds more value in the NBA since it isn’t a glorified Quarterback of the Year award the way it’s become in the NFL. He also got two gold medals from playing in FIBA twice, though his college career was vacated due to scandal. So idk, I don’t think he’ll get in.
Also, there is a backlog in the Naismith, but it’s usually international players that get the short end of the stick (see Oscar Schmidt, may he Rest in Peace).
It’s because this sub is a lot of basketball fans. You’ll read about how the NBA has the weakest hall of fame, worst amount of gambling ads, most incompetent refs, and so on. They are more unware of what other American sport leagues are going through. You can then go read an NFL fan’s thoughts and he’s saying the same shit about his own league. It’s kind of the nature of the internet at this point
Could you imagine what people here would say if Adam Silver ever called the Larry O’Brien Trophy a piece of metal to dismiss punishing a team that cheated.
Yeah, that’s a great point – fans will be more critical of their league, and echo chambers regurgitate stuff.
Bot
Sterling Sharpe made it in because of his injury circumstance and his brother. He wouldn’t have sniffed it if not. Also he had to wait forever despite a great start to his career
The real test is Lou Amundson
Lou was better than Cole Aldrich (low bar) but the coaching staff couldn’t figure it out
It’s not the NBA hall of fame, the fact that so many of you continue to not get that is hilarious
Ok so Amar’e’s Israeli league championships should put him in the Hall? Because other than that he was good NBA player, that’s it. If guys like him get in then we’re gonna be inducting everyone who played in the 2010s-2020s
Amar’e put up slightly better production than Pau on a slightly worse team. He’s not just “everyone who played from the 2010s-2020s”. He’s a legitimately great player who fell apart due to injuries
I wish they would put some standards for what is considered a HOF, but so many are inducted there, so maybe it is too late.
Robert Horry should be in.
Amare might be more of a fringe candidate but he was a dominant part of a pretty epic Suns team that had unfortunately never got it done. But also had the misfortune to be in the same era of peak Kobe/Lakers and Duncan/Spurs dynasties.
he’s a much better player than Chris Bosh and Ben Wallace
and he’s literally the only person being inducted bc of his NBA career. they aren’t just letting everybody in. 7-time all star Joe Johnson and Lamarcus Aldridge weren’t put
It’s WNBA players, Joey Crawford, and Doc Rivers going in
Getting an All-NBA vote once (not even making the third team) gets you into the HoF. It’s the biggest joke in pro sports Hall of Fames
True, but Amar’e made five all nba teams which isn’t anything to scoff at
Honestly Amar’e is a bad example, but the fact Joe Johnson is gonna get in is terrible. Literally making in off a nickname
He made first team once and second team 4 times. TBF if you’re a top 10 player for half a decade and have moderate playoff success I think it’s fair to say
Nba HOF is a joke. Water is wet.
NBA HOF doesn’t exist. It’s the basketball HOF.
Jewish connections
this is antisemitism
This is getting thrown around in bad faith by folks unfairly these days but you’re right. Legitimate hate. Shouldn’t be allowed on the board
i noticed that comment at least one more time in this thread, and yeah same guy, just spamming “jewish connections” … what israel is doing to palestinians is awful and a crime against humanity, but yeah this actually reeks of antisemitism.
Ooooh… right….
It’s not like he was a 6x All-Star, 5x All-NBA, 2002-03 All-Rookie, and 2002-03 Rookie of the Year.
Some can argue this case.
Always feel bad his knees betrayed him
Dude was an absolute stud
he also didn’t have a good backup and D’Antoni ran him into the ground
He was more just unlucky, he was never the same player after he got injured in the 2011 playoffs doing warmup dunks. His dropoff in play can be linked to that one moment
That microfracture knee injury ruined so many. Look what it did to my boy TMac
Yeah it’s bad. T Mac one of my favorites of all time and I still maintain that peak T Mac was as good or better than Kobe. But the knee injuries sapped him. His pre injury peak was next level though.
Even Kobe called him the toughest player he ever had to defend
T Mac really was that dude. He was absolutely electric.
Tmac at no point in his career was better than Kobe since Kobe was elite on both ends… However, Offensively here’s a case to be made for the 02-03 season
Bruh T Mac defended too. Don’t let your flair get I the way
Who said he didn’t? He wasn’t elite at it especially once he left Toronto.
Amare was never going to finish his career healthy. The entire reason he came to NY was because we were willing to offer him a max length contract while Phoenix, known for the best medical staff at the time, only wanted to give him up to 3 years at the most. They knew he would break down.
He also didn’t want to play center but d’antoni ran him there anyway until Shaq.
He was a fun watch. Truly made basketball entertaining.
Dropped 37⁄10 on elite efficiency in a playoff series against Tim Duncan
First high schooler to win rookie of the year
Solid player but not HOF worthy.
He was 5 time All NBA. The only other 5 time All NBA player that isn’t in is a pedophile
College and international play count
Amare? College?
Just saying all aspects of a career count in general.
I mean he did not play college ball and only played like 50 games abroad and was below average…
So what? He wasn’t special in Israel and never went to college. I love the guy but seeing how prestigious the other HoFs are and then the level of the bball HoF its a joke
6× NBA All-Star (2005, 2007–2011) All-NBA First Team (2007) 4× All-NBA Second Team (2005, 2008, 2010, 2011) NBA Rookie of the Year (2003) NBA All-Rookie First Team (2003)
Pretty much anyone with those accolades will make the HOF
I agree, he should be there based on the standard that was set, its just that the standard is too low imo, and that comment about international/college play is irrelevant
Nah I completely understand where you’re coming from. He was good but not great. HOF should be people that dominated a category or changed the game
In my “head canon” HoF should be someone you cant tell the story of the league without, can you forget about Amare and tell pretty much everything? If so he shouldn’t be there.
Thing is he did change the game being part of the seven second offense. Had he been on a worse team that didn’t have HOFers he likely wouldn’t have made it imo
Yeah but he went down with an injury and the offense didn’t miss a beat. That’s maybe the biggest knock against him, in my book
Yeah you have a point, whats for sure is he is better than a lot of other HoFers so theres nothing really controversial about this from a basketball standpoint
someone you cant tell the story of the league without
I hear this all the time, and I don’t understand it
A “you can’t tell the story” Hall would have J. R. Smith in it, and wouldn’t have Dame Lilliard
Yes that bar is too low imo
Yeah. When its meaningfully. Not when international means he won Israeli league twice, and somehow got bronze on Olympics while being part of basketball team from America.
That literally doesn’t help him. He never played in college and was a shell of himself overseas
yeah his 12/6/0 in Palestine and 19/8/1 in China really tipped the scale, good point
Best Palestinian player ever
Gefilte-fish is Palestinian too
I’m shocked he made it in
The bar for Naismith is the lowest in all of sports
6x All-Star and 5x All-NBA is typically right on the borderline.
6X Allstar is borderline but generally makes it, the 5X AllNBA definitely tipped him over the edge.
I truly don’t get why people are mad with this selection. He didn’t make it first ballot but he got in as he should.
Retired 5x All-NBA players not in the Hall of Fame:
LaMarcus Aldridge - first year eligible
Blake Griffin - not eligible yet
Kevin Johnson - probably never getting in for very not basketball reasons
End of list.
Aldridge will be in within the next 2 years, definitely getting in quicker than Amar’e,
Blake’s getting in within the first 2 years of eligibility as well.
“I truly don’t get why people are mad with this selection”
Israel.
I’ve gathered from this that he played there after his NBA career.
I’m not into the whole politics of it all but I’m sure that both helps and kills his case. People should leave their extreme views out of sports.
I agree
Tell that to r/nba and the rest of reddit
Guess it’s extreme to think genocide is bad
Agreed it makes the strong case, but everything was a 7 year span and otherwise he was washed
A career of what could have been. Injuries took away his explosiveness and effectiveness.
With that said, only 2 people with that many Allstar selections are not in the HoF, both have 3 AllNBA selections (Jermaine O’Neil and Shawn Kemp)
If anything I think that helps him. After 7 years he was injured. Probably could’ve picked up a couple more all stars and maybe an all NBA selection or two
And that’s what’s wrong with the HOF
I don’t think a half decade of being one of the best players in the world is an insanely low bar. It’s not first ballot, but Amar’e wasn’t first ballot.
should not have by any means. basketball HOF sucks but this just discredits it further
Not really, it isn’t something special that ruins its perstige further, its typical basketball HoF
Is this why you barely hear a hof debate in basketball?
why does he remind me of JB Smoove
We all look the same to you, huh.
He was a hofer imho. I remember him torching Tim Duncan in playoff games which the suns usually lost
Amare had 1 great year with the knicks. Dare i say the rest of his tenure was a liability.
Dude he was all nba 4 times with the suns lol
They’re saying that Amare was a liability for the rest of his Knicks tenure.
True, makes more sense
Felton- Amare pick and roll was a problem and I don’t care who hears me say it. There really were MVP chants for good reason
As a Big Amare fan. He ain’t HOF worthy. wtf
I love Amare but HoF? Good for him… there’s a lot of others then that are more deserving. He did have an all star stretch for about 10 years however.
A lot? Like who
Larry Nance, Detlef Schrempf, Bill Lambier, Rasheed Wallace, Kevin Johnson, Mark Jackson… similar players of impact, longer and more impactful careers.
Edit: Shawn Kemp, Shawn Marion, Jermaine O’Neal, Tom Chambers.
It’s really Amare”s All-NBA selections that gives him the edge over the peeps you mentioned
Who isn’t in that you think is more deserving and eligible?
Hobert Rorry
Yall hating on Amare are ridiculous lol this man was cold af for a decade. Co-Lead the most fun to watch era of suns basketball in my lifetime
Wth how’s this guy in hof!!???
Every 4 time+ all star gets in now?
Happy for him but might as well put me in the hall at this point
[deleted]
Antisemetic speed run PB
I know we all agreed that he was on pace to be a HOFer if not for the knee injury. But that doesn’t mean he should get in.
5 time all NBA isn’t on pace. It’s a lock
Is he the first Israeli in HOF?
Wikipedia says an Israeli team got inducted in 2008.
No, Micky Arison got there last year, he is the owner of the heat since 95’. Tal Brody may join them at some point, was a finalist in 25’ and 26’. He is the first to join for his accomplishments as a player though.
Tal Brody is a freaking legend.
A great person too.
I didn’t know much about him besides the fact that he is a Maccabi TLV legend, that comment made me read up a bit and turns out he didnt just come to Israel because it was the best opportunity, he chose to join Maccabi inspite of getting drafted with the 12th pick of the 1st round.
Turns out he served in Vietnam and was dischared from the IDF just before Yom Kippur, also played for the national teams of both countries, crazy life story.
His community contributions include showing up to endless charity events and raising money for them. One of them is Variety (children with special needs and disabilities).
Maccabi Tel-Aviv stunned CSKA Moscow from the USSR (highly favored - it was considered David (Maccabi) vs Goliath (CSKA)), winning the European championship of 1977.
He also got one of the most iconic Israeli sports quotes of all time, after it: “And we are staying on the map – not only in sports, but in everything”
(in short, “We are on the map”, as people often don’t quote everything accurately)
In this case, if I understood correctly, he refers to Israel/Israeli people, and his quote brought tears of joy and excitement to many, as it was just 4 years after the Yom Kippur War (which Israel won, but at a high cost), and the fact that the tiny country stunned the big club from the huge country - the USSR.
According to Wikipedia, he wasn’t just 12th in the NBA Draft; he was a really big talent, impressing many teams.
He was voted a 1965 All-American, along with fellow college basketball players like Rick Barry, Bill Bradley, and Billy Cunningham. He was also named first team All-Big Ten, a second team academic All American, and a Converse top-10 player.
The Sporting News picked him as one of the top 10 players in the nation, along with Bradley, Barry, Cunningham, and Jerry Sloan
I didn’t realize how good he was considered before joining Maccabi (Israel was his first trip abroad).
Edit: He also has a birthday soon; he will turn 83 on August 30th.
WTF never knew “אנחנו על המפה” was from him, absolute legend.
This guy absolutely does not deserve to be there. Not a bum, but nowhere near HOF. Fuck out of here Amare
Here’s the list of 6X Allstars that are not in the hall of fame: Shawn Kemp Jermaine O’Neil
That’s it ..
Both of them have significantly less Allnba to their names.
05-06年的纽约尼克斯真的好烂好烂
What does this have to do with amare?
Get this Zionist c*nt out of here.
Wish he didn’t play in Israel tbh
He didn’t just play in Israel, he converted to judaism, got a Jewish name (Yehoshophat ben Avraham) and while he doesn’t live there anymore he is a part owner of Hapoel Jerusalem, still has an Israeli citizenship and is a staunch supporter of Israel.
Oh fuck so we should definitely give him the HoF for his religion and endorsing genocide!! Great call
Everyone gets into the bball HoF (unfortunately) but I doubt his ties to Israel had anything to do with it, just wanted to expend on your comment because he didn’t just play in Israel, he became a full on Israeli
Not saying that greater Palestine had anything to do with his induction but becoming a Palestinian is entirely irrelevant to this comment
Do you think then that Israelis belong in the area as they are Palestinains? Are they not colonizers?
Do you think strawman because I don’t agree?? Checkmate liberal
Nah, I think that if we view Israelis as distinct, unique colonizers that don’t belong in the area, we shouldn’t call them Palestinians but Israelis, otherwise you are white washing Israelis aren’t you?
Netanyahu bot detected, disengaged
So im a Palestinian bot if Israelis are Palestinians? You are coming off as extremely pro Israel.
The Israeli basketball league is all Palestinian as gefilte-fish
Dude is Jewish and training to be a rabbi in Israel. Of course he played there.
Just because you’re Jewish, doesn’t mean you have to support Israel
If you’re a smart Jew then you do, considering Islam has colonized Northern Africa and the Middle East, forcing everyone else to leave, while people call Israel colonizers with a large amount of Arabs and Muslims citizens
Oh I don’t call Israelis colonizers. Just genocidal religious fanatics.
The irony of calling Israel that, while the people they’re fighting kill for trophies, live stream it to the world, say they want to wipe Jews off the face of the earth in their charter, and killed for Iran while disregarding what it meant for their own people, yet no one has any criticism for them.
Religious fanatics in a country where it’s legal to be any religion, the irony. Iran funds the 4 largest terror groups in the world. Islam has ethnically cleaned other religions out of 30+ countries. Zero is said about it. But yes, let’s hate the society that is most accepting of other ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation and change the definitions of buzz words so it fits your narrative
No one has criticism for Hamas and Iran? Fucking lol. How delusional can you be? Israel has killed thousands of innocent civilians, they’ve bombed schools, hospitals, and refugee camps and yet they are still somehow accepted by the west. You can’t even defend Israel without bringing up Iran and Hamas (which no one in their right mind should support) because what Israel has done is indefensible. But hey who cares about the children they’ve killed, the widows and orphans they’ve made, the society destroyed… As long as they are somewhat accepting of gay people! How progressive.
Everything is about Israel all the time. They lick Iran clean on this app. Hamas is never talked about
Blud is a simp convert on payroll but yeah okay
Technically not a convert since his mom was Jewish
