Doc: “To every player who trusted me enough to coach them, I’m sure there was times that I wasn’t easy. I’m sure there was times that I wasn’t right. But I can guarantee you every time my motives were right.”
Legit no one wanted you to coach the Bucks
Didn’t Doc Rivers tell the Bucks front office “I don’t know why you’re doing this” when they offered him the job? lol
He told Bill Simmons that, for sure. But it’s hard to believe Doc didn’t do a lot of heavy lifting rat-fucking Griffin out of a job. Can’t believe he hasn’t gotten another shot at a head coaching job, yet.
It was big news at the time that Adrian Griffin was wildly unpopular within that organization
And then his baby grandson died
It was Giannis’ masterclass. He did not like Griffin because of his brother. He just wanted pushover who doesnt care, so he can claim he left because of awful coach and bad roster. Like it wasnt his doing.
giannis also didnt want nick nurse because siakam and OG told him he sucks
Not that he sucks but his practices were tough is what I remember.
I’m pretty sure he said something similar also when he first got hired.
It produced an all-time graphic
He took a free check, everyone in their right mind would at that point.
Oh please. It’s an NBA head coach role. Doc acting like white anting the current HC when acting as a consultant, then riding in to save the day even thought it was so hard and he didn’t want to do it.
One of the worst. That’s how the fans remember you Doc.
Evem he was confused that the Bucks front office wanted him lol
Definition of failing upwards
Doc is a Marquette legend, there is a cult of Doc in that city and it runs down Wisconsin Ave.
I’m surprised rondo wasn’t up there. Why were all players that the camera person zoomed in on had a weird ass grin. Jeremy Lin, Rajon Rondo
I don’t keep up with it, but didn’t that group have major beef with one another? Maybe Rondo is on the outside looking in because of it.
Giannis literally called him a great coach and requested out from the Bucks after Doc left
I don’t believe you.
Your motives, when repeatedly throwing your players under the bus after failure, was to protect yourself and the expense of the player. If you think that’s “right” you need to apologize for claiming to be a good coach.
Doc seems like the type to convince himself that he can do more good as a coach than any individual player, so throwing one under the bus is the “right” thing to do
Also on a coaching level, just so stubborn and poor/no adjustments. That Celtics series in 2023 pisses me off so bad.
I still can’t believe you’re blaming Doc for Ben Simmons regressing to the point that he was scared of dunking the ball.
Could you point out where I said that?
You’re clearly referring to Ben Simmons situation as a sixers fan
Not particularly, it’s something he’s done over and over again and at each and every coaching stop.
Insult Doc for not being able to make adjustments but the NBA is a players league. Who did he blame when he lost with clippers? Or Celtics ? Or Magic?
“I’ve seen the trend for years. The trend is always making excuses. Doc, we get it. Taking over a team in the middle of a season is hard. It’s hard, we get it. Just like getting traded in the middle of the season is hard for a player. We get it. But it’s always an excuse. It’s always throwing your team under the bus. They lose to Memphis, ‘oh, it’s his player’s fault,’ Memphis was playing G League guys and two-way guys. I mean you look at his quotes over the weekend, now he wants to take credit for the James Harden trade to the Clippers working out? He wants credit for that? There’s never accountability with that guy. There’s never accountability.”
Quote JJ Redick
At the clippers he said they were “never going to win a championship” because they lacked chemistry and cooperation. You might think that was the coach’s problem but nope.
Magic he said he deserves praise for having them compete, “have you looked at the roster… It was a hell of a coaching job” Here’s a link https://youtube.com/shorts/zK04toYUWQQ?is=ZnlrikMVn8btAleC
Celtics is his lone success so yeah he isn’t blaming his players for anything. Wow
You’re quoting someone else lol. Why waste so much time.
I’m quoting a player who played for him and is now an NBA coach. If you can’t grasp why that might be useful perhaps you should get medical attention for your brain damage.
Are you dumb
Milked that 08 title more than any one team ever has.
And had multiple 3-1 choke jobs lol this dude sucks
That team won in spite of him. Might be the first team ever that could have won the title easier if their head coach wasn’t involved at all.
Let’s not forget Tibbs inventing the strong side zone
I genuinely don’t understand how Tibs could be not only competent but a defensive innovator, and on offense just absolutely trash and rudderless.
Ubuntu
I never understood why Redditors parrot this line ad nauseam. Do you think he contacts every front office going “but I won the championship in ‘08!” ?
He doesn’t need to say anything, just having a championship on your resume as a coach is a hige deal, even if it is on a team that won it all DESPITE you being there, instead of due to your contributions. This is especially the case because team owners are often clueless about the ins and outs of coaching, but when presented with the option to hire a coach who has already won a championship, they might push for that option over someone who hasn’t, and many GMs will acquiesce.
So it sounds like team owners are milking that championship and not him
It’s definitely both, not sure why you’d argue otherwise.
Mr zero accountability
Mr Blame Circumventer
Everytime I see I him I hear that RDCWorld skit in my head of him throwing his team under the bus, “Paul George…Paul George listen to me when I say this: You. Are. Trash.” 😭
I just don’t get how someone who seems so unlikeable was able to slide into several huge jobs
Hey that’s just the reality of how the world works. Dude must have the deepest connections since he played in the league and coached for such a long time, he probably knows the right people to call. Same goes in the corpo world. It’s unfair yeah, but that’s the system for you.
So the reality is that the systems in place are so oversaturated with greedy assholes who really can’t do the job that they will consistently recruit greedy assholes who can’t do the job. Smells apple pie is the NBA just a reflection of America?!
Doc Rivers is incredibly likeable and has a history of being friendly with everyone. He even took time in his twenty minute speech to thank the front offices he worked with, his assistant, and family.
Of note he is also friendly with several media outlets and is open interviews, which raised his visibility and the number of opportunities brought to him.
I think there is a difference demonstrated here between intentions and motives. Intentions are conscious, motives are subconscious.
I can believe Doc if he says his intentions, consciously, were good. That he was always trying to help people succeed, be a leader. But that is different from the motives behind his actions, which I think show the ways he refused to take accountability, and sometimes even put in effort.
What a colossal jerk
Based Doc Rivers??
Rondo face lmfao
This dude is so unlikable.
On thing that I appreciate about Doc is the consistency of no accountability. Genuinely some of the funniest things I’ve ever seen
Spoken like a true narcissist.
Hey Glenn so what were the motivations exactly for lying to the media about benching Maxey being his idea?
Edit: who tf downvoted this lmao are you really taking Glenn Rivers word over Tyrese Maxey find god
Forgot about that one. What about crying and gaslighting the media after Paul Reed, a second round pick and has a nice game, a chance to help him secure a decent contract and whines about ‘not going on a Paul Reed victory tour’ and he ‘played Paul against small bigs, DJ against bigger centres’ which easily was proved to be complete bullshit.
BUY A REAL PODCAST MIC, GLENN!!!
there are more players that has disliked him than love him
i find that implausible tbh
Nate Robinson disagrees
Doctor Rivers ladies and gentlemen.
Ok Glenn…
How ? Just cause 08 Celtics?
What a humble man. Would love to see him become winningest coach in history. Lakers, pls hire doc.👏
If he was green people would think Glenn was Kermit’s older brother who smoked too much of everything and that’s why he acts the way he does.
How did he make the hall of fame
I guess since Dantoni got in and he never won a ring, Doc gets in by default. That means Nick Nurse, Mike Malone, Joe Mazzulla, Tyron Lue, and Frank Vogel all get nods.
let‘s Go Lest’s Go Lets Go !
Glenn lurves him some Glenn.
Not sure there’s another topic on this sub that encourages herd mentality more effectively than Doc
He wasted years of Tyrese Maxey’s career. I don’t care what his motives were and I’m sure they weren’t right.
Is he trying to get another coaching gig? This feels like an ad for him.
Hate him or love him, he got to do what he did and there ain’t nothing you can do to take it away 🫠
Nobody milk three careers out of one ring like the 2008 Celtics
i detest this man on a level usually reserved for people i’ve actually met in person
This guy sucks
Coach Mike Brown is going to be singing “who let the dogs out” at the Hall one day for sure.
To every player who trusted me, even though you knew I was going to throw you under the bus if we lost.
Fuck he just lies when he opens his mouth. Some of the shit this said and did at the Sixers….
I can say I am true to what I do and put in my best effort as well, but if I get it all wrong, it then don’t matter. The fk Doc?
He’s on the top 10 wins list of all time. He won a championship. This sub can hate the guy but pretending he got everything wrong is so funny. Just a bunch of dudes doing an elephant walk
They are letting anybody in the Hall of Fame nowadays. Should rename it to Hall of Average.
Ran my glorious Greek god out of town
I’m no Doc fan but the idea that he ran Giannis out is nonsense to me.
Giannis can play coy about his influence in the org all he wants but anyone with the capacity for logical thinking knows he likely played a large part in Griffin’s dismissal and the subsequent hiring of Doc. Giannis was the bread and butter for the team and we’re talking about an FO that signed not one but two of his brothers who had no business on a roster just to appease him. That’s fine but he doesn’t get a full pass just because Doc underwhelmed as most of us already suspected he would – especially when Doc made it pretty obvious he didn’t seem all the interested in the job aside from the paycheck from the very beginning.
