Doc was considered a great coach with the Celtics as I remember. Good ATO’s and rotations. The slander didn’t start until years later I think.
Doc is the kind of coach that requires a very specific roster to be successful. Namely that roster needs 3 specific players on that stage. He could have won more rings with them if injuries/luck issues circumstances happened differently.
But without those 3 he’d just think a playoffs series is won after 3 wins instead of 4 like the old days.
Real ones know that Thibs ran our historic defense that year.
Part of being a head coach is putting the right people in the right positions of course.
Yeah, Doc has had a ton of success as a coach, and many of his players love him. Whatever ups and downs he’s had, he’s clearly a deserving hall of famer.
