Richard Jefferson on Taking the Heat for NJ Nets Gay Rumors
That’s a hilarious move from Collins
What if he was the one that leaked the rumors. He himself thought RJ might be closeted and was trying to pressure him to come out 🤣
He knew exactly what he was doing when he said, “Hey, I got your back” haha. This is hilarious
He was a wonderful man. My father’s deli was struggling financially, and Collins offered to sign store branded shirts to generate additional revenue. Collins even suggested they could be given to customers that completed the “Richard Jefferson challenge.” Next thing we knew, we had groups of people trying to eat footlong with no hands.
It’s not every day you get new BeefCat. These young bloods don’t even know they’re in the presence of greatness
I swear to God I haven’t seen a comment of theirs in literal years and randomly thought of RogerSimon10 and ShittyMorph today, then BAM, the third member of the bait’n’switch trinity.
RogerSimon10 and those jumper cables…
I’m new. What’s the lore with beefcat?
He’s been inactive for quite a bit, but he is a legend that posts insane copypasta worthy stories in comments mostly on sports subs, r/nba for the majority of them. He now does it like twice a year.
Just scroll through his comment history and enjoy, you won’t regret it.
Dude I miss that era on this sub so bad lol, miles and miles better back then than it is now
Same brother
I just went back to re-read some of the ones I loved and of course, read anew the ones I missed and I found the last one I ever upvoted, 5 years ago
Still might be my favorite, it’s so weirdly wholesome:
It is just really unfair to Ben. For all intents and purposes Ben is an amazing guy. He supports local business, uses his wealth charitably, and even speaks at schools and promotes STEM programs. My sister and her husband own a deli around the corner from his house and he often stops by when he isn’t even hungry and buys fresh bread. My sister talks about how she watches him through the glass as he rips pieces off and throws them to the birds while excitedly saying,“another assist for Benny.”
BeefCat and Yungsnuggie. Those were the days.
Wait I remember Yungsnuggies ID but don’t remember what for. What was he known for??

I feel like I just ran into MJ at the park
Man, I was just thinking to myself the other day, “whatever happened to that BeefCat dude? I haven’t seen anything from him in a while…”
Perhaps I willed his reappearance into existence.
Oh crazy. The last time he posted before this was 300 days ago. 10 months of no beefcat is too long.
Bruh 😭🤣
Oh man I think this is the freshest BeefCat I’ve encountered over the years
Delightful
There’s a post on r/nfl whose title includes “…another pick for Beanie…” and it immediately made me think of u/YaBoiBeefCat. Only to find out he posted not more than an hour ago? Such serendipity.
Is this a shit post
This man doesn’t know BeefCat.
How does one even explain?
Ohhh is this a shittymorph situation lol
Perfect, no notes.
A new beefcat!!!! It’s been too long….
Just commenting to say I was part of history
It’s an honor to be outjerked by /u/YaBoiBeefCat
Omg
Wow upvoted cuz I thought it was real.
Then I came to learn and behold the true greatness underlying this well cooked pasta.
smells like teen spirit fresh beefcat
Rest in Peace to Collins.
I hope he inspired a lot of athletes to feel free to live their sexuality and true self despite constant homophobic remarks by both media and some dumbass players.
Until there is an active star athlete that comes out, queer athletes will continue to hide their sexuality. There’s too much money on the line to “feel free to live their sexuality.”
There have been active players who came out as gay, but they didn’t last long in the league after (in the NFL, Carl Nassib and Michael Sam).
That really fucking sucks. Imagine having to pretend you like men, if you really like women, because your teammates won’t accept you as a human being for it.
The problem is that any sane and remotely empathetic person should understand this, if explained like that. But those bums, and I’ve met a few like them growing up, just don’t understand it, even if you explain it, like I’ve explained it in the first paragraph.
They just want to hate and make people’s lives a living hell.
“The Crooked Man” is a short story that was published in Playboy Magazine back in 1955 where homosexuality was mandatory and normal while heterosexuality is outlawed.
The magazine got a ton of complaints about it because they felt it was wrong for the heterosexual minority to be persecuted in such a way, obviously missing the entire point. Hugh had agreed to publish it after other magazines declined and pointed out the hypocrisy saying “If it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society, then the reverse is also true and it’s equally wrong to persecute homosexuals in a heterosexual society.”
Hugh Hefner was such a strange, terrible, weird guy. Absolute cult leader and monster who basically ran a house of sexual exploitation, who ran arguably one of the most socially progressive media publications of all time
Ironically, the UFC has that with Amanda Nunes and frequently touted how empowering it was for her to compete as an openly lesbian fighter.
Gay women are very common in sports. the WNBA is like ~50% LBGT
Luke Prokop became the first person under an NHL contract to come out as gay. Drafted in 2020, came out in 2021, he was 19 years old at the time. Hockey is an extremely homophobic sport, so it was very brave of him to do so and hopefully has the same impact Collins had. Unfortunately he hasn’t gotten NHL time yet, but wishing him the best.
There are zero openly gay athletes across all three of the men’s major sports. No one will risk their next potential contract to come out.
I’ve never heard it called the major “3”, always 4. NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL
some dumbass players? Unfortunately it’s an entire culture behind it.
Don’t really think the media gives a shit. Not sure why you lumped them in with the players.
Certain media outlets definitely would make a deal out of it
I think you need to reassess your definition of “the media”
even disregarding clickbait/troll media, the players make up a huge portion of the media. for example, the media clip that you just watched
There are way too many podcasts, but I can accept that as long as we occasionally get absolute gems like this.
This is the first nba player podcast to ever exist btw lmao
It’s actually kind of endearing remembering the awful quality of the first few episodes where they were recording on planes.
Gilbert arenas and nick young on there is one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever watched. I go back and listen to it a couple times a year.
They had to quickly take the original upload down for the arenas/young episode and edit out the parts where Gilbert seemingly confessed to committing arson back in their Arizona days lmfaoooo I’m sure the original is out there still and you can see nick young bring it up and gil is like kicking him saying chill chill
That is the original episode lol, it’s an unlisted link
Good shit i gotta rewatch it then
Nick young is permanently fried lmao
Literally insane lmao
Definitely not. Jalen Rose had one way earlier.
Jalen rose did not have a podcast as an active player. Road trippin’ happened while Channing and RJ were playing.
rose retired in 07 big dog
Thank you for that information very cool! What was his podcast called in 2007 big dog.
Was still an NBA player, where did the comment I responded to say “active”?
Yea no one is saying that Road Tripping was the first ever podcast to talk about NBA, it was the first podcast from active NBA players talking about the games they had just played.
Yes as in actively playing in the NBA.
Below average reading comprehension 🫵🫵🫵.
That is in no way implied by the quoted post. Like what the fuck are you even talking about rn?
Sorry active, and JJ Redick was first I think. But they were the first video recorded podcast
Yeah but what about Paul Shirley’s blog huh?
I think JJ Reddick was the first nba player to have a podcast
Actually you’re right, they had the first video recorded podcast, jj was audio only
I’ll watch anything RJ is in, dude is funny as hell
He funny in everything but broadcasting, shi makes no sense.
Not that crazy when you think about it. Play-by-play guys are often going to focus on the call versus the back-and-forth. Podcast partners and deskmates have more opportunities to clown him.
RJ is at his best when he can be the butt of the joke.
Play-by-play or ‘analysts’ get grilled too if they don’t maintain that focus. I get it, you have to appeal to a broad audience, which often means just trimming back any personality traits that will annoy enough people.
I still think of Jeff Van Gundy as someone who did have those moments where he would drop that focus on the game to bring some humor or levity to the commentary, which is where that infamous second cousins commentary comes from. Some people just don’t like the awkwardness for one, other people don’t care for commentary taking away focus on the game.
Shout out to my GOAT caster/commentator SUNSfan in Dota 2.
Respect Road Trippin’ nephew
This is like the OG player podcast dude
Yeah this podcast is over a decade old.
‘I got your back’ 😉
yeah he said that to test the water cuz if richard confided back, then…
What a narrow-minded comment. Or it implies that you actually sexualize every female you happen to pass by?
not every, extremely attractive ones. you dont think richard jefferson is attractive, thats fine
and its not narrow minded im just continuing the joke the original “i got your back” comment was making
Funniest possible response but still way off base (as someone that agrees RJ is extremely attractive but does NOT sexualize every extremely attractive woman I interact with)
okay so why are you cool with the sexualization of the “i got your back” comment and not my comment?
you do realize what “back” is implying in the original comment dont you?
Dw I got your back
That’s not the point at all. Your comment just sounds like you say a gay man has uncontrollable impulses and is a pervert
Why didnt you comment that on the “i got your back” joke? why did you only single mine out when we both made the same joke?
Not the same thing at all, the original one is playful and harmless whereas yours, again, implies thay gay men are unable to handle their sexuality in pubblic settings
ETA: if it’s the same joke then why did you feel the need to add an extra layer to it?
a private text richard recieved is a public setting.. got it. your brains not working well is it
people continue making the same joke because it continues the fun. why do people quote movies when the quote is already in the movie?
…soaps be droppin’ during showers in the locker room?
This was a real thing, I remember the realgm days before reddit everyone online thought rj was the gay one on the nets lol
I used to get shit from my friends back in the day that Jefferson was gay so I was gay bc I wore his jersey lol it wasn’t serious but it is nuts how people treated even the thought of someone being gay like it was the plague back then.
During that time anything someone didn’t like or agree with was “gay.” It was a different time 😂
It was a different time
I think it’s important to explicitly state that the difference is that society, and all of us who used “gay” to mean “bad”, was more homophobic. I think too often “it was a different time” is used as an excuse when it should be just a description. Nearly everyone did it, but that doesn’t mean it was ever okay.
Ya I was going to say, I remember those RJ rumours from message boards back in the day, I never made the connection later to Jason Collins being on the team at the same time. Always just thought it was the random dumb shock jock rumours like how X player is sleeping with his teammates wife that pop up after trades and things like that.
TIL RJ is *not gay
I believed it too, mainly because of the weirdess around his cancelled wedding. It never occurred to me that the rumors were really about Collins.
There were those yacht pictures with RJ and Luke Walton and some other dudes in their sunglasses.
He has always had a real “laxed” personality to where you could believe that yep, he’s gay. I was shocked to learn that nope, he was NOT the gay person too!
It’s like learning that Prince really wasn’t gay at all. I thought dude did both for decades until Chapelle Show. Afterwards it was like the floodgates opened at how NOT GAY Prince was! That’s why I feel those scenes were historic as previously we just didn’t know much about him as he never offered it to us for public consumption
On Insidehoops there was a thread about RJ, posts about his voice and tattoo, linking that to him being gay.
Yeah I remember that well. The crazy thing is that I didn’t even make the connection when Collin’s came out years all those years later
Good to see some fellow former RealGM forum dwellers in here.
you mean the insidehoops days?
That’s a cold move 😂😂😂
Damn man, rest in peace to a beautiful soul
RiP Collins
And then later on, KG went full ally and offered to get some fellas along with some girls for the team. Times have changed.
RIP
Clips like this warm my poor unfortunate Nets fan heart. Loved that squad. Love them more now.
RIP f man
Geez TIL he passed. Obligatory F cancer, way too young.
It RJs matching tattoo with Luke Walton
And weren’t they ‘roommates’? Ngl I thought it was true too during the realgm era… Not that there’s anything wrong with that
Honestly I was fully convinced that they were both gay and used to cite this evidence
RJ is wild 😜😂😂😂😂
Rest in Power Jason Collins 🙌🏾
There were definitely 2 gay people on those nets lol
If Kerry Kittles isn’t gay, then i can’t judge anyone’s sexuality based on their name.
Rip
RIP Jason Collins
The Richard Jefferson show is fucking hilarious so any clip with him talking shit is great.
Eddie House is my dude lol
I hope these dialogues help change the homophobic attitudes in African American pop culture, where rappers are still very homophobic and conservative. Seems like a really healthy change, super here for this.
NBA players are making cultural waves and I fucking love it. Your heros are your heros for a reason, amazing to see them support all people.
Probably not. For a lot of people in the black community the Church has a high regard. For a lot of churches you can be a guy on the choir but you better not be openly gay.
It was a huge thing where gay groups stood up for immigrants and other groups then expected the some help when the gay groups were catching hate but those same groups were also ultra religious groups that were not friendly with the gay cause.
I remember people used to wild out just because Rodman wore a dress or Prince wore frilly stuff. There are people who don’t like Chuck because he’s pro gay. There are a ton of people that don’t like Frank Ocean because he’s gay. Kevin Hart lost a ton of money saying he’ll smash a toy over his son’s head if he found out he was gay.
Even Wade said he had to move his family out of FL because even though he’s Wade he felt like his family was in danger. This is DWAYNE WADE of all people, he’s a local hero.
There is progress, but it’s slow. But it’s so deeply ingrained in the culture.
We still don’t have an active gay player in the NBA though.
I always cheered Jefferson on any team he was on but I loved him as a NEW JERSEY NET. Rip the nets. Legendary team with him Kidd and k mart
Actually might be one of the funniest behind the scene stories I’ve heard in the NBA.
RIP. Jefferson is a gem too
That’s HILARIOUS
why are they seated so far away? lol
https://youtu.be/CI79h2FSnS4
It’s allowed now
What pod is this?
Road trippin, same one where we got Kyrie flat earthed and Jordan Clarkson saying there was bug people walking dinosaurs like it was dogs. This one looks to be around 2020-2021
Richard Jefferson is low-key kinda funny when he’s not calling games
Nets legends
Reminds me of the Key and Peele Townhall audience member skit
Its a known fact that Jefferson cancelled his wedding just a day before.
He “partied with the boys” instead.
🤣🤣
Damn he died?!
I’m not homophobic but straight people don’t want to be called gay. That isn’t surprising
some dont
some dont care, i dont care if people think i am, its not like it would be a bad thing if i was
I have a buddy who is like a 400lb power lifter. Our entire lives whenever somebody would call another person gay, he would immediately jump in and say “what if he is huh? What if that’s my boyfriend? You got something you wanted to say? You think it’s cool to talk shit to gay people, let’s talk”
You’ll never see somebody become an ally any quicker than that.
Lol I’m like that. If you think I’m gay I don’t care, literally doesn’t matter to me
Sure, but it can absolutely negatively affect a straight person’s life.
Take me for example. I played football in high school freshman year. My teammates found a picture I posted on IG in middle school of me jumping at the beach. Cringe in hindsight, but I was like 12. So I started getting light ribbing about me being gay, which is whatever, but then the joke devolved into just mean, public embarrassment stuff.
There’s a school trip to Canada for a long weekend, 4 people to a room with 2 beds. The guys I’m rooming with are telling me that I have to sleep on the floor and start arguing with each other in front of me over who has to share a bed with me when I refuse. When I fall asleep, one of them pokes a hole in the cap of the water bottle, puts it between his legs, and makes a video of him spraying me like he’s cumming on me and sends it to everyone.
We’d be at a party with like 50 people, game of spin the bottle going on, and everyone starts snickering when it’s my turn or if a girl lands on me. If I land on a guy or another guy lands on me, which is obviously a respin, the room erupts in laughter. You ever have a room of 50 people laughing at you?
Now none of the girls at my school can date me. Whether they genuinely thought I was gay, or were afraid of being made fun of by other people for being a “beard”, or both, it doesn’t matter. And to prove that was the case, I had 5 different girls from my small class of 180 students who hit me up within a year after we graduated, who I had absolutely zero idea had any interest in me, because they simply couldn’t show it.
So you can’t date anyone in your school. Great, so I’ll have to meet someone at a different school then. I do sophomore year, and I tell very few people, but somehow it leaks. Now my girlfriend is calling me sobbing because she’s getting harassed by guys at my school for dating me.
So even if you aren’t homophobic and think there’s nothing wrong with being gay, being called gay can still fucking suck.
your example doesnt prove that being called it sucks. it proves that other people who think you are, suck
Agreed, partially. You wouldn’t out a gay individual who wasn’t ready to come out why should someone not be upset that they are being called something they are not. I don’t like people saying things about me that’s not true but I don’t see anything wrong with others who differ from me. Add on any added inconvenience this may lead to, and it’s just unpleasant. What if the person actually turns out to be gay and it affects them in an even more negative way. We shouldn’t be making assumptions about others and assigning labels. There’s no need for it and like it’s been said, there’s usually ill will or malice behind it.
But the reality is, people who call other people gay or make assumptions about people’s sexualities rarely do it in an innocent, inoffensive way. And even if that isn’t the person’s intent, the public display of it inevitably has harmful ramifications considering there are homophobic people around to witness it and make judgments.
Being called gay is not the problem in that situation, mate. The homophobia from other people who think you’re gay is the problem.
The simple public categorization of someone as gay who is not openly gay is inherently homophobic because it strips the person of their right to come out on their own terms if they are actually gay, and allows other possible witnesses to the accusation to cast their judgments onto them regardless of it’s true. It is absolutely reckless to publicly put that onto someone knowing the struggles that gay people go through in life due to the widespread homophobia in society.
The problem is still the homophobia. Without that, being called gay would in no way be an “accusation”.
You’re arguing that being gay isn’t bad, so therefore calling someone gay isn’t inherently bad. But any understanding of how society treats gay people should make you realize that calling someone gay who is not openly gay, whether they actually are or not, is still homophobic because people will inevitably treat them differently because of the categorization.
I’m arguing that saying that someone is gay is not in itself bad.
It does undoubtedly have negative consequences, but those are essentially just the same consequences for regular homophobia, just targeted at someone who isn’t actually gay. Hence why the problem I have is with the homophobic response. I couldn’t give two shits whether the victim of homophobia is actually gay or not.
But calling someone gay knowing what the consequences of it will be is still homophobic. Arguing about it in a vacuum is incredibly pedantic and not applicable to what happens in real life.
The consequences exist because of homophobia, assuming someone is gay isn’t inherently homophobic. Is it homophobic for a gay guy to assume someone else is gay?
Who cares if someone thinks I’m gay!
What’s funny is we’re told to accept gay people but then get offended when they’re accused of being one
There’s no need to get angry about people thinking you’re gay because there’s nothing wrong with being gay
Lol throughout high school I was asked if I was gay. I was in an all girls dance class and my girlfriends did not attend the same school. I remember thinking, damn these other guys don’t like girls as much as me lmfao
Username checks out
Insecure manbabies don’t want to be called gay.
not wanting to be treated inconsiderately doesn’t make people “insecure manbabies”…
Of course you don’t like it. The getting viscerally angry many do is pretty funny.
Only homophobes think being called gay is an insult.
Plenty of people have thought I was gay over the years. Doesn’t matter to me.
You arent superstitious just a littlestitious
The dissonance between this comment being massively downvoted and all the comments saying “ha ha RJ is so funny for telling this story about how he didn’t like everyone assuming he was gay!” being upvoted is weird to me. RJ is definitely telling this story from a place of “ugh I don’t wanna be considered gay, that would be terrible”
I agree with that. Though maybe because Jason Collins is there folks think it’s okay?
Yeah I’m pretty sure people are ignoring the undertones of “It’s not me, it’s YOU, you’re the gay one! Get away from me!” but I mean the latent homophobia of the black community is frequently ignored
Yeah, people only seem to pay attention to it if the person is a militant homophobe like Boosie or something. And that RJ is seen as a nice (if not corny) guy.
RJ saying “you let people think I’m the one here out like that,” and the like that makes it seem being gay is indecent or something. I would say even using the term “homosexual” that RJ used in the beginning is as dated as using the term “Negro” to describe Black folk (not in exact time, but by how each community came to define themselves over the past several decades or so).
Collins rightfully corrected him on at least the when to come out, though.
I’m not homophobic, but…….
the comma-but always leaves an obvious odor of the opposite.
I wouldn’t be offended if someone thought I was French. Only weak, bitch ass people would care about anything like that. Period.
I actually would not want people to think I was French
