I think people also sometimes forget or don’t realize how much worse knee injuries could be 10-20 years ago. With modern medicine, athletes almost always return to near 100% with an ACL injury. Back in the early 2000s, recovery was more variable. Some players, Ammo included, just never recovered. Also, training and recovery was much harder as a Type 1 diabetic.

Getting more into the draft the last two years, it’s really interesting to see the valuation difference between one-and-dones and 3-4 year players. I also think about how there used to be so few guys drafted before a full college career (this changed in the 90s mostly) that there were a lot fewer draft busts.

Interestingly his teammate Farmar might have had something to do with his career not panning out, since the final four collapse by Gonzaga vs. UCLA was the last time I remember Morrison being referred to as an elite prospect. Before the game was even over, Morrison was crying at mid court and his teammates had to pick him back up. It was rough to watch, mentally he totally collapsed. Before that point he really was considered the best college player in the country and he probably could taste the championship but knew he blew it. I do think that affected his confidence for the rest of his career. All eyes were on him, top prospect, chance at the chip, and collapsed crying with there still being time on the clock… ouch

looked liked a star in college. What went wrong?

I mean, there are quite a few “stars in college” that didn’t have great pro careers. If you were to look back, it’s probably close to a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ failure rate, if not worse, of All-Americans’ NBA Careers.

Just looking at NCAA scoring leaders since Morrison there’s only a handful who even had moderately “successful” NBA careers: Steph, Jimmer, Trae, McDermott, Reggie Williams, Edey and Dybantsa.

That’s less than half in over 20 years.

The college game is a lot slower than the pros, even when Morrison was drafted. In college you can get by with little to no athleticism if you’re much more skilled than the other guys. In the NBA the skill level is about the same, you have to do things that set you apart from the crowd. Same thing with Jimmer Fredette.

Multiple rookies have mentioned this. Players are faster and stronger across the board in the NBA. Some guys coming into the league can never catch up.

IIRC he was that archetype of player where they’re athletic enough for college, but not enough to keep up in the NBA.

He wasn’t athletic enough to get separation offensively on his own in the league. He lacked the side to side mobility to be able to guard anyone. Also I believe he had some off court mental health issues as well which I’m sure didn’t help.

As other says it was injuries that definendo him, together with overall lack of athleticism.

I think also people are too harsh on MJ management, most of the time he wasn’t even that involved, and some times he just was unlucky. The Bobcats were a fucking meme I kinda miss them.

He had an outlier three point shooting season in his final college year judging from the basketball reference page. His stats also came from playing a ton of minutes and a weak schedule.

It was a weird season too because it was JJ redick and Morrison lighting it up that year. And JJ looked like the guy who wouldn’t be able to replicate it in the nba because of his size and athleticism and morrison looked like he was going to have an nba career. Then it was just the total opposite.

Morrisons injury was the reason, tho. His second season he was showing signs that he was going to be good.

Comments covered the obvious stuff (athleticism, injury). Generally, he’s the classic college star that doesn’t translate to the NBA. Lacked NBA-level athleticism, no defensive position. Wasn’t big enough to play ⁴⁄₅, couldn’t defend wings adequately.

More deeply, he just wasn’t that skilled offensively, by NBA standards. Great shooter, but his college offensive game was mostly being bigger than college wings and shooting/scoring over them, or being more athletic than college bigs and pulling them away from the basket. That goes away when you’re in a league full of athletic 6’6” guys. He was never able to consistently create his own shots in the NBA, and he wasn’t athletic enough to get open consistently as a spot-up guy.

People had somewhat similar concerns about Steph. It wasn’t universally appreciated at the time that he was a generationally great shooter, not just a great shooter. And the difference really, really matters in the NBA.

Side note about him though, he’s a doomsday prepper with a state of the art settings. His former teammates have seen it but he denies it. Sounds like an awesome thing to do if you had millions to burn.

The competition was so different in the NBA than it was in college. He could get his shots in college, but in the NBA he wasn’t capable of creating his own looks. Which isn’t a deal breaker. Plenty of role players could be knock down shooters just by standing outside the three and waiting. His release, however, wasn’t the fastest. Defenses could recover quickly.

It’s a shame. I liked his game in college and was rooting for him to succeed.

I think most people thought he’d be awful at defense and would struggle to score at the same level in the NBA.

I viewed him as an extremely risky pick. That draft class sucked though. There weren’t many good options and you kinda had to talk yourself into everyone.

Aldridge was the only guy I thought was both safe and likely to be good to great.

Guys like Randy Foye and Sheldon Williams were viewed as safer picks with upside and they both kinda stunk.
