Westbrook didn’t always make the right play, but you can be damn sure he gave 110% in everything he did
Many Denver fans blamed him for that ending of regular season game vs Wolves when he fouled on 3pt shot at the very end which brought win to Wolves, but that is Westbrook, and the team benefited much more from that kind of mentality than they lost in that match.
Not on defense he didn’t. Which is a shame because he’s maybe the most athletic guard ever, but was never a consistent defensive stopper.
John Stockton made 5 all defensive teams, Russ made 0.
He was always elite on ball
But he’s not the smartest so he struggled in action
That’s not even true. He gambled on steals constantly putting him out of position. The stats don’t support this at all.
That generic shit about Russ always gets upvoted and makes no sense. Russ put in mediocre effort off-ball on offense and on defense in general. A guy who gives “110% in everything” doesn’t look like that.
What you can say about Russ is that he was one of the most athletic, explosive, and entertaining players ever. And a guy who always played with copious amounts of fire, intensity, and energy. There’s no doubt about that, which was why he had such a loyal following. I loved watching him too.
But he damn sure didn’t give 110% effort into everything on the court. Generic platitudes can’t paper over the tape.

Regular season guys who are inefficient their entire career and massively underperform their defensive tools drive me nuts. Floor raisers, not ceiling raisers.

i still cannot fathom why the nuggets didnt take a flyer on russ. his style of play is a known quantity, so just surround him with shooters and try and get team chemistry even more locked in. they lost regardless this year so i dont see how he would have hurt their run.

pretty sure they told him they would re-sign him but were going to prioritize different players. he wanted to play, and they wanted him to ride the bench.

I think he ‘could’ offer plenty to the right contender in a limited minutes role but I’m not sure that’s what Russ wants. I think for him to be motivated to play he want to have a significant guaranteed role. Russ’ play style was more about giving you everything he had night in night out, keeping that up and preparing every night to do that when there isn’t a guarantee you will play isn’t easy. Think he deserves some props for realising that and choosing to end his career rather than warming the bench for half the season
The problem is Russ giving you his all means plbad shots, turnovers and bad off ball defense. When he was closer to his peak his good HUGELY outweighed the bad but that’s not the case anymore on any contender.
I think he’s in a weird spot where in a bad team that he gets the ball he could still put up really solid numbers. The problem is that team wouldn’t be good enough to make the playoffs but wouldn’t be bad enough to tank.
He’s too inefficient and bad on defense to contribute to a contender. There’s just too much bad to offset the food at this point in his career for winning

I wish Russ played this level of defense more throughout his career he always had it in him
Never made sense that he wasn’t a better defender. He had all the tools to be elite but just never cared enough to put the effort on that end.
He was great in college, but it makes sense that he dropped off. He had a historically high load and motor on offense; you have to rest a bit sometimes.
Even the bad defenders can lockdown for a possession or two, consistency is what makes the difference.
I think him driving so much on offense made it consume too much energy on defense.
