But almost everyone is a Knicks fan. Nobody cares about the Nets. You can mention NYCFC as well, but that only includes soccer fans who are willing to watch MLS (like me).

The CBA says players get 51% of basketball related income, which isn’t a number the league can know before the season starts. At the end of the year, the league knows how much they’ve made and knows the exact number that equals 51% of BRI.

Potentially as a result of the 24-25 finals being between two smaller markets, that income was lower than expected. When that happens, the league withholds a percentage of player salaries in order to meet the revenue split.

When a more popular team makes the finals, the league should make more money, and 51% of the profit becomes a bigger number going to the players. So small market teams making the finals ends up making the players on those teams less money than they would if they didn’t make finals and we got some combination of Lakers/Warriors vs Celtics/Knicks every season.

It also works retroactively.

All player contracts combined roughly sum to 51% before the season. But 10% of salaries are kept in escrow.

At the end of the season, they are all proportionally adjusted so the total sum equals exactly 51%. The escrow gets paid out accordingly.
