The world has-for the most part- forgotten what journalism really looks like; the time it takes to dig into the details and chase down the leads, vet the information, get response/comment from relevant parties, and report it all.

The thing is, he probably is. It’s not like these stories just write themselves and fall into his lap. Especially when he has no authority to ask anyone any questions. That’s what makes what he’s done so incredible, it truly is old fashioned investigative journalism. Something that seemed to have died long ago.

I think people are more aware of it then ever, but I really believe large swaths of the country still don’t care about it. I think a lot of them view it as money they are earning fairly; I talked to someone who said that the loopholes and laws they exploit (or ignore) to make money is total fair game, and it’s not the Billionaires fault that no one holds them accountable.

He’s keeping something quiet until after the report is released to show the report is a whitewash. I feel it in my bones.

Some of it might be hanging onto the thread but some of it is he and his team are doing actual investigative journalism like corroborating stories, going through documents and archives, etc., to make sure they aren’t just spitting unverified rumors.

Beat reporters are not investigative journalists. The media companies that employ them have investigative journalists. If the media company wanted to investigate this, they would assign one of their investigative journalists to do it.

Integrity won’t feed your family

It doesn’t even matter if most people chose integrity instead. The people with the most money who are ultimately responsible for decision-making here are the ones who chose money, so they fire those with integrity to keep things running smoothly.

I have friends who pivoted from journalism for unrelated reasons, but this was one of their bigger complaints when getting started independently, and even when they found more traditional employers. They could not write something negative, but important, because they couldn’t speak against people who kept their lights on.

Their access is their livelihood, and that’s a bit of a problem if we want to be privy to developments that may amount to a league-wide scandal (more importantly, this applies to any field of journalism, from the political to the economic). It’s almost scary to think about what we’re missing because of how vital access, and subsequent appeasement, is to some personalities.

I think an independent hub, dedicated to elevating black listed journalists, would be a good start in addressing the matter, but that’s expensive. It’s also time consuming, you’d need experts, and it’s a multi-bodied experience. It’s not practical for this very moment.

I wish I had a solution. We have independent hubs, but without true moderation and fact checking, they turn into echo chambers driven by clicks instead of fact.

To end on a positive note, all of this makes me appreciate a guy like Torre a bit more. He has built himself in a way where he can do this, shield his platform, and comfortably grow. That’s a cool way to live.

I’m a Raptors fan! I want Kawhi back on our team. But that in no way makes anything Pablo is doing “wrong” or “bad” to me. He’s an actual journalist doing real work and it is criminal that no one else has taken this up after he started it. Why haven’t I read articles on ESPN or the Athletic digging deeper into this? They all have boatloads more resources than Pablo. But fucking crickets!
