All they can do is hold hearings, which any of Trump’s people can just refuse to show up to. The penalty for refusing to show up for a Congressional subpoena is that Congress could refer them to Trump’s Attorney General, Todd Blanche, for a contempt of Congress charge. That’s a dead end. Anyone who does show up to testify will just claim “executive privilege” and that will then be bogged down in court until it goes to the Supreme Court, where they’ll probably back Trump.

It’ll be better if the Dems are in control of Congress, just because the way it is now is fucking awful. But Trump and his enablers are never going to see any real justice until he’s no longer in the White House, if ever. Trump hasn’t even been going to Congress for all the shit he’s been doing now, and that’s with his party in charge in both houses, so I don’t imagine that avoiding a Dem controlled Congress will be much of an impediment to him. Not when the SCOTUS backs him and he controls the military and the DOJ.

So I did a little reading on the investigation. It sounds like there’s no charges yet, the companies are cooperating and divesting to clean up the situation. Most likely the main punishment will be some big fines and settlements, which he won’t personally be on the hook for.

But unless there’s more to it (which there could be), it doesn’t sound like he’s going to suddenly need to pay billions out of his own pocket, or need to curry favor with Trump to avoid prison or anything.
