Those 3 were from the last few years of the bob myers front office, dunleavy has actually been very solid at drafting players who can come in and contribute immediately (podz, tjd, post, richard) it’s just that yaxel is his first lottery pick ever

Really, it feels like dunleavy gets way too much shit for inheriting a dogshit situation from myers who mishandled two high lottery picks in b2b years, gave out the horribly aged poole contract, then dipped

I strongly suspect that the team did not want Jaylen Brown on that contract. So I kind of doubt that they had a big offer on the table for him that would have beat Philly’s. (It’s an interesting question, too, of PG vs Butler’s value. Butler comes off the books next season. PG is actually helping you win this year.)

Completely whiffing on those 3 high lottery picks (Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody) is probably the NBA gods balancing the scale of hitting on (Curry, Dray, Klay).

This is the real answer. Moody I don’t count bc getting a solid starting wing out of the 14th pick is a success.

But whiffing on Wiseman at #2 and Kuminga at #7 was the death knell to the franchise continuing to contend. Imagine if Wiseman had grown into the star mobile big man we’ve always wanted next to Steph.. the team would be in a very different place right now.

you guys gotta realize draft is not exact science. very rarely a generational player that is considered as #1 by everyone comes around. even then it’s not certain, look at zion. and the rest is just “educated guesses”. go look at mock drafts of respective years. everyone had wiseman at top 3 and everyone had kuminga at top 10. ofc years later after seeing them play against nba veterans it is easy to say “oh obviously eiseman was the wrong choice what were they thinking!” well they were thinking what literally everyone else was thinking.

the trick is not to find a guy with one pick. the trick is having many pick over the years so that you can increase your chances of finding a guy. warriors’ plan depended on having 100% success rate with 2 picks. it’s not realistic.

Not fair to call Moody a whiff. A solid rotation 3-and-d player with a high bbiq at 14 is pretty good value. He’s not the problem, and it really hurt when he went down late last year.

We’re just not a really attractive destination for star players anymore

It’s not attractive for a star player looking to win (either now or long term) to join a geriatric squad with Steph and Dray on their last legs.

The franchise has every chance to rebuild well post-Steph: we’ll have good picks, an owner willing to spend, and a good market/city to offer (not NYC/LA/Miami level, but good).

But until this era is over, no star player will want to join us; and justifiably so.

I’m content with rolling with the squad as is and seeing what happens. I’d also add that Jimmy greenlighted coming here, Horford specifically picked us, and Porzingis re-signed; so it’s not like good players are all running away.

So I don’t doubt he’s aggressive in asking about players. But I do doubt his aggression in terms of what he’s willing to give up. Remember Pods was off the table for Lauri.

To attract “star” players you kind of have to have a good enough team.

The warriors have completely failed to build around the margins to make this an attractive team. Build brick by brick. But they have refused to give up any assets to do so, preferring to save up for a big move - which ironically won´t happen because they have a misfit cast of role players.

You’re still trying to get a fair deal, even if you are pushing aggressively for improvements to a roster. Paying good picks for marginal boosts just isn’t worth it.

Picks are worth more now than ever with the new CBA (especially for a team like GS that’s paid a lot over the last few years)

the problem is that they don’t have cap for any sort of deal so they need to trade players and most of their players with a contract above 5m are injured, old or both

they have 118m in Steph and Butler, Draymond 28m, Porzingis 20m, Moody 12m and the rest of the roster makes peanuts

It’s not that Podz is the new Chris Paul, but he is a good bench player that makes 5m, that’s why he’s untouchable, same with Wil Richard at 2m or Gui Santos at 4m

Trust me when I say a large portion of Warriors fans eat this in the sub. They truly believe MDJ is doing his best and there isn’t anything he can really do. It’s kind of hilarious to watch in real time.

Get those stats up. Easily getting 20 ppg and 25 mins per game with the Warriors sitting 40-50% of the roster on back to backs. 

I agree with this.. if they don’t trade Steph it’s only going to make the down period that much longer. If they waste assets trying to put players around him to win, they still won’t win and they make the down period 15 years.

It’s time to let it go. Call the hornets and tell them 4 firsts and whatever it takes to match for curry. And find a way to dump green as well, I’m sure someone will take him and start studying for the draft.

Their future is going to suck for a long time, but it’s still fun as hell to see Steph with some talent around him, even if they won’t win it all.

I big time disagree on Jimmy….He’s a 56 million cap clearing contract that expires at the end of the year, while being good enough of a player to keep you from being in the bottom 3 (or, has been, at least).

His contract is incredibly valuable, and there will absolutely be teams looking to clear books come deadline time.

Philly just got Jaylen Brown for Paul George’s contract and a couple firsts…which is a year longer than Butler’s, simply because it’ll clear Boston’s books sooner and allows them more flexibility sooner. Golden State can find trades for Butler.
