What makes this so cynical, was that David Stern knew, before hand, that marijuana could be helpful to certain players. He just didn’t want to change the rules. He worked so hard to move the league away from its drug addled image from the 70s, that he didn’t feel safe politically until laws were being put forth to legalize marijuana.
On top of that, while the league has stopped testing for it in 2020, marijuana was only removed from the banned substance list come collective bargaining in 2023. So it is likely that NBA players had to give something up to get that passed.
