is sport fishing really on the level of the others?

This thread is really underselling how crazy Gene Conley’s professional sports career was. He pitched for the Boston Braves in 1952, then played for the Celtics in the 1952-53 season. He left the NBA for five years to strictly play baseball, where he was a three-time All Star and World Series champion, before returning to the Celtics in 1958. He fully retired after the 1963-64 NBA season, when he was on the Knicks.

Here’s the crazy thing: he never stopped playing baseball.

He pitched in 1958, rejoined the Celtics that fall, won a title, spent the summer and fall pitching, and did that for three straight years, winning NBA titles all three years. Then, he left basketball for one more season before returning for two more seasons with the Knicks. He played in the NBA and MLB five out of the last six years of his sports career.

He’s not the only guy to play in the NBA and MLB, and not the only one to do both at the same time. Dave DeBusschere is the biggest name to do both (pitched for the White Sox in 1962 and 1963. He is, however, the only athlete to win a championship in both.

Edit: I’m going to add the list of Hall of Fame teammates he had in MLB: Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, Henry Aaron and a young Carl Yastremski. Aaron and Matthews were on his WS winning team. Imagine winning a World Series with those two, then going back to the NBA and winning with Russell, Cousy, Heinson and Jones.

Fishing is not a sport, and I preemptively demand you stop typing whatever rebuttal you’re trying to spin up about how difficult it is or whatever, it’s not a sport.

If his back is actually healthy i’d legit sign him. But when I look at the last few years the drop off.. But his sie, defense, playmaking i can see how he can be hopefully a draymond.

Simmons already has a fishing title if he comes back and wins a chip with Philly he might be the greatest athlete of all time

Jim Thorpe deserves an honorable mention. Played pro baseball and football plus was on barnstorming basketball teams which was essentially the extent of professional basketball in the 1920s.

And he won gold in the decathlon and pentathlon at the Olympics for good measure.

He would be perfect on LeBron team in Philly , he doesn’t need to shoot hes there for dirty defensive work and to give LeBron a breather due age imo. They have plenty of shooters this is an obvious singing for them

To be fair: Ben Simmons is far more successful at fishing than Jordan was at baseball 

You’re completely ignoring celtics great, Larry Bird, who took a brief hiatus from the NBA to join the French Lick Dirtslingers of the upstart National driveway paving association (NDPA) before returning to the celtics in the 1986 season.

he might as well sign a minimum with the wolves. they need someone to fill minutes at PF badly and he’d be cohesive with their defensive identity. there is the spacing with gobert though…

or maybe the lakers? same story with wanting a power forward and this time he’d be offering a defensive presence they desperately need. again though, kessler can’t shoot for shit and that makes ben’s fit challenging.

cleveland maybe as well. they’re in the kuminga sweepstakes and if they fall short simmons could be a replacement. i’d mention allen’s complete lack of shooting but if cleveland adds a starting power forward to the roster, that probably means mobley is shifting to the 5 and allen is traded. mobley is a bad shooter but he is capable of talking around 3 3s a game and hitting enough of them to not yell at him about it, so it’s not impossible to put him on the floor with simmons.

i’m thinking through this as i write this comment and actually the nuggets are probably the move. jokic is one of few centers that spaces the floor well and most of the nuggets roster can shoot too. they also desperately need defense and with one of watson or johnson probably on their way out, there’s going to be minutes available. i think denver is probably the move.
