Kawhi Leonard Wins The Series At The Buzzer
Crazy how well you can hear it bouncing on the rim. Just adds to the drama of it all.
I just always assumed that they have mics near the rim with how well you can hear swishes or bounces. Do they not have those?
they do
You’re correct. It makes a huge difference.
They have mics basically everywhere on the court but theyre usually incredibly focused on different things and constantly rebalanced to match whats happening for broadcast hype
They have multiple mics on the backboard
They do. The NBA sound guy did a video recently where he showed where every mic on the court is. Good watch.
Have you ever tried talking in front of your elementary school gym, thats 100-500 kids? What about at a college auditorium 1000-2000 people? This is 20k screaming people. You need a microphone for 100 kids unless you have massive lungs and diaphragm
The moment this shot went in, Uncle Dennis wanted ownership stakes and private jets in the next contract
Look at Kawhi, man, so aspirational
Just soul crushing. I dont like it, but objectively it is absolute cinema
I’ve always thought that if Simmons stayed on Kawhi all the way, he could have gotten a better contest. I say this not as a Sixers fan, but as a Jimmy fan of all things, and I legitimately think that was his best chance at a ring. Yes, better chance than any of his two finals while he was with the Heat.
Sixers would’ve won the title if they beat the Raptors that year, at least put up the best fight against the champs
It was kind of the thug finals.
I do think Sixers would have won it out. Joel played TERRIBLE that series mainly because of Marc Gasol (and apparently his love* of milkshakes). If he plays like 30% better with no Marc on him then yeah Sixers might have been champs.
I legitimately think that was his best chance at a ring. Yes, better chance than any of his two finals while he was with the Heat.
idk about that. It was the best team he was on in terms of talent, but even if they beat the Raptors, they have the Bucks with MVP Giannis and then the Warriors (albeit, KD-less) who swept the WCF. If Embiid is able to play heavy minutes and stay healthy, maybe winning those 2 series is more likely than the Lakers series but I really don’t think so.
Early 2020s Jimmy Butler can handle the east, the Bucks aren’t the big issue.
And the 76ers can probably handle the KD/Klay-less Warriors.
That Sixers team was stacked but I think you’re forgetting/downplaying how good that Bucks team was. Far and away the best regular season team that year. 4th in Offensive rtg, 1st in Defensive. They were a monster. I agree with a healthy Embiid that the Warriors without KD were an easier opponent.
of course he had a better shot with the sixers. half the heat roster was in the g league until heat culture pressed them into rotation players for the second finals appearance
Yeah, it’s like he kinda gives up on the play, but embiid is right there and 7’2, so I might be too critical of Simmons. Epic shot either way
it’s not that he gives up,
Embiid completely cut off his lane he really didn’t have a choice in the matter.
Yeah, I get it, and I know we’re breaking down a play from 6⁄7 years ago, but he just floats off and ends up in no man’s land. He can’t follow the play? Maybe provide some back pressure?
Lol, I guess he could have hip and shouldered Embiid out of the way
I have this play memorized and yet I still watch it. In the non-Eagles category this is tied for worst moment, for me, with the Ryan Howard ground out that ended him and that Phillies run. Soul crushing.
“Is this the dagger”
I love the “oohhhhhh!” reaction too because that’s about the only reaction you could have had at that shot. Felt like I said it in unison with Kevin Harlan and Greg Anthony.
You can’t use that call against us! It’s forever ours!
No thank you I’ve already appropriated this to Devonta Smith for my mental health
Chris Paul hits a HUGE 3-Pointer to cut the lead down to 42
[deleted]
nah
For anyone wondering, a gentleman’s sweep is when Team A wins the first 3, Team B wins game 4, then Team A closes in 5.
There are a bunch of other terms for the different 4-1 margins, but the only one I can remember is the reverse sweep. Team A wins game 1. Team B wins next 4.
Edit: context as guy I responded to deleted comment and apparently my memory has failed me and I was referring to a backdoor sweep ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ironic…
Go on
i think reverse sweep means blowing a 3-0 lead
This has literally never happened before in the NBA. It wouldn’t have a term for it.
Edit: bad take, this
that’s an interesting way of looking at things
You win this round.
Team A wins game 1. Team B wins next 4.
Pretty sure a reverse sweep is team A goes up 3-0, then team B wins the next 4 straight.
where the hell did you get that from 🤣
from what I know, “dagger” usually refers to a shot or score that effectively puts the game away even if there’s still time left on the clock. you can argue that kevin harlan misused it here and he should have gone with “clincher” or “winner” but the call is so good that it doesn’t matter
redditors trying to correct kevin harlan is awesome, a dagger kills the other team, thats why its called a dagger.
you can easily use google to search how “dagger” is used in sports parlance and see where I’m coming from. I’m not even complaining about harlan’s call. I’m just pointing out how the term is often used to that other poster who was incorrectly defining it
https://www.sportslingo.com/sports-glossary/d/dagger/
No, dagger just means the shot that puts it out of reach for the other team.
bro making shit up lmao
Aint no one here for your NBA fanfic. No one has ever thought that is what it means lol
Still the most dramatic buzzer beater I’ve ever watched. Such a crazy shot.
I can’t decide between this and LJ’s 4-point play in 1999. This one had more drama (all those bounces) and had higher stakes as a game 7, but as a Knicks fan, I’m biased.
Edit: I guess there was Allan Houston’s runner against the Heat in 1999 too. Damn that was such a memorable run.
If the Knicks won against the Spurs it would be better since the 4-point play saved their season in a totally improbably fashion. But unfortunately they lost and their run was over.
So Kawhi’s shot is one of the biggest clutch shots ever. Even if we widen the criteria to include things like Ray Allen’s G6 three in the 2013 Finals, Kawhi’s shot still probably is at the top.
That’s a very good point. I’ll concede.
I mean I saw the LJ 4-point play on TV as it happened.
Insane play that still ranks up there in the top 5 most clutch NBA moments ever lol, wasn’t intending to be critical of it.
Of course, no offense taken. The Raptors run in 2019 was insane in its own right. You guys knew you most likely only had one shot to make it work, and you all delivered.
Ray Allen’s has to be above it, if this shot doesn’t go they go to overtime. If Ray Allen’s shot doesn’t go they lose the Finals
It’s going to stand the test of time. The shot itself from Kawhi isn’t that notable; it’s an off-balance corner 2 with time winding down. But then the ball decides to play with the rim and tick down those last few seconds, ensuring that Philly could not respond.
If this ball just swishes in, we forget about it in a couple of years. If this ball misses, we forget about it instantly. But somehow it found a middle ground between those two points to become timeless.
I mean an off-balance corner shot fading behind the basket buzzer beater game winner in game 7 would absolutely still be one of the best shots of all time. The rim bounces just make it number one.
Dame hit his game/series winner during this same postseason. But this shot was crazy.
and that was a shot in game 5 up 3-1, but this was for the series
Game 7 was the distinction but Dame also won the series with his shot
That’s a bad shot
Really is. Give him that shot 10 times, he prolly makes only 2-3 of them. It just happened to be one of those 2-3 lol
And they went on to win, historically it just meant so much more
Well, it was more to send it to overtime or not where the Raptors very likely would’ve won regardless with Embiid gassed and Simmons/Harris with 5 fouls each
No trust bro the sixers were totally gonna cakewalk to the championship if that shot doesn’t go in, trust bro /s
That stupid take was everywhere for a while. I’m glad we all had a sip of Bill Simmons Settle Down Juice
Sixers still had to 1) win in OT on the road 2) beat Bucks without home court advantage 3) beat Warriors without home court advantage
I always get a laugh when I see Sixer fans saying they were “1 lucky shot away” from winning the series
Calling it a lucky shot, if it was some random on the team, that fits. But someone like Kawhi, an NBA superstar. That shit ain’t luck lol
Because of the bounces this is legit the most dramatic movie ass game winner ever
this one is similar, to win a series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXOts9kaiLQ
I was watching Game of Thrones, finale if I’m not mistaken. My roommates were watching this, I skipped out because I had no skin in the game. Hate that I can’t say I was watching live due to mid ass game thrones ending.
mid ass game thrones ending
Generous, tbh. I still pretend like Season 6 was the final season
everyone is still chilling around the fire, drinking on the night before the battle of winterfell.
nothing happened after that.
It went to shit long before Season 6 unfortunately
Eh, it started going downhill around season 4 imo but it wasn’t completely shit yet. Seasons 5 and 6 were on par for a good show that declines in quality as it wraps up imo. The show didn’t become a complete disaster until after that
Agree. S4 was peak. IMO it started rolling downhill quickly in S5 before falling off a cliff in S6.
Killing off Stannis to have his story arc replaced by Jon with the battle of the bastard fanfiction garbage was atrocious
S6 was at least still watchable. 7 was just fucking horrific.
It’s actually Season 4.
I was somewhat the same as you. I had GOT on my laptop and the raptors game on my tv. I remember that GOT episode was whatever, but man that raps game will forever be goated.
I just know Reggie Miller would have ruined this moment with him yelping at each bounce
Miller might have the biggest gap between their peak as a player and their “best” as a commentator/media personality
Like Perkins sucks but he wasn’t ever All-NBA good, Reggie is a literal Hall of Fame and he’s just bad on the mic
If we’re including all sports, it’s Tom Brady.
Brady sucked at first but he’s gotten a lot better. A bit biased though because him and Burkhardt were doing the SB we won and they had some iconic calls
Fair. From my perspective he went from atrocious to fine which still be a huge gap in player to announcer skills since he’s the goat.
What? Consensus is Tom Brady is a great announcer.
The way the crowd goes quiet while the ball is bouncing on the rim.
Literally like a movie when it goes slow-mo and quiet, with the ball bouncing around the rim forever.
I was in a packed bar in downtown Toronto and you could hear a mouse fart for those 3 seconds.
Greatest shot of all time don’t care what anyone says
Yeah this one’s amazing but I like MJ’s “last shot” more.
The one with the push off?
I aspire to make a shot like him one day. Board man gets paid!
I will never forget watching this with my dad. I hold this memory close to my heart
Man, I was having a good day
Have you reminded yourself that the 76ers came back from 3-1 against the Celtics and then went back to them and orchestrated the trade that made LeBron consider Philly yet today?
And all that time he was thinking, “If I make this shot, some Jumbotron company is going to make me a spokesperson!”
Look how bad Embiid played defense in this play! Simmons was in his pocket but Embiid screened his own teammate.
That was as good of a contest as you can get. At 7’2 and was right in his face.
That was just an unbelievable shot.
It was good double team till simmons decided his duty is over, lol. He had done this a lot
Greatest and most clutch shot of all time to me
What a moment
Shot was just insane and the 4 bounces
He saw how the crowd was locked on the scoreboard and realized he needed to get in on that

Boss
James Ennis.
shaking
tearing up
This is still the greatest run to a championship ever
It’s crazy to think about how many times I’ve watched this
sixers could not have defended that shot better than they did. They had Embiid jumping right at the shot.
SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE BOYS THAT WERE PRESENT ON THE NBA DISCORD AT THE TIME. Craziest moment
This is Raptor’s fans version of “The Shot. This is the type of shot that you always remember where you watched from
Embiid tried to trap him and instead just screened his own man.
Simmons had the lateral momentum which Embiid didn’t. Leaving Simmons to defend it himself is a great ‘what if’.
Yeah i feel if anything embid should have cut him off forcing him to go out of bounds of give the ball up
I was in a sports bar and I remember audible gasps throughout the whole place when this happened
if this was on an american team, let alone the lakers or miami, this would be the undisputed greatest shot of all time
Saw this live. Still gives me goosebumps. #klaw #whatitdobaby
Kyle trying to tap Kawhi’s head but was too short 😭😂
Free Kawhi
Amazing moment and beautiful day
I ditched my buddies Game of Thrones party for this. Well worth it.
I had this game on mute I was so nervous.
That Raptors team was so fun to watch. Deep, committed, locked-in and refused to quit. Must have been exhausting for stars on other teams when they realised getting a switch wasn’t going to get them an easier match-up, that whole squad could lock it down.
Oh le shoot de Kawhi!
I was crowded around a phone screen with like 3 other people outside a tattoo shop in Portland watching this happen. Still an unbelievable shot.
And the Sixers still haven’t recovered from this
The irony is that earlier this year the Eagles had the double doink win, and then the Raptors double doinked the Sixers
Tbf it seems like they’ll recover just fine this year lol
It all depends on Embiid’s health. So nothing has really changed
I think I disagree.
They have solid depth and an awesome starting 5 even sans-Embiid
which means its gonna end in tragedy as usual
Nah
Ok
We’re good over here
A bum who makes a legendary shot is still a bum
God damn this hurts
were embiid and simmons supposed to trap kawhi? it sort of looks like it, but then they don’t actually do it.
To this day I feel Embiid was a step slow and they were supposed to trap him. Franchise changing shot in terms of direction of the organization.
I never noticed that the TNT scorebug never updates. It just stays 90-90 the entire time.
His return and the stadium doing his steps leading to the pull up was so fucking cool
I will never understand why he left Toronto after winning…
This brother was not even a scorer. Hard to believe
how tf it went in after that ridiculous bounce
Crazy run, Kawhi cemented his legacy carrying that squad to a championship
You had to be there (I was).
This is when I realized magnets are real
in a vacuum, its far ahead the greatest game winner ever. 2nd best is Dame over OKC.
Embiid was a +10 in 45 minutes in this game and they lost by 2.
Sixers coming back for revenge 2027
then he got all he wanted while going to the clippers because of all the underhanded deals
EDIT: yall are dumb for defending kawhi
Lol who is “y’all”, there’s been a single person disagree with you, and they are getting downvoted.
Prove it was underhanded. (Seriously everyone wants to see some evidence)
The fact that none of it was ever announced despite it being a public relations gig should be a dead giveaway. Seriously, why would you not promote a promotional deal?
Embiid tears gif
That’s a bad shot, was then and is now
respectfully fuck you op
I can’t stand that Ben Simmons stopped guarding him before he even took the shot.
He didnt stop guarding him he guided him right to a second defender
This shit propping up Kawhi Legacy
This shot wouldn’t go in during the 90s. No joke. You see how the ball just lingers around the rim. It wasn’t like that in the 90s with different ball/rim design.
Ben Simmons with the lazy defense
Luckiest crap ever
Feel like this is his only highlight
His dunk on Giannis was also series-defining but yeah, he’s just not a flashy player
He has so many hightlights on this whole run. He has a dunk in this sixers series where he dunked on 3 players
https://youtu.be/tq3DO9wdF0k?si=24kZ-gwF5ntYCsCi
Lots of it are just forgotten
The blind diving steal,The double block with Danny green, the trapping demar at half court with Lowry and getting a slam dunk to seal the game . Man what a season.
if the greatest shot of all time is your only highlight you probably did pretty good.
Man fuck your bullshit little ass country. I hope Kawhi’s punishment is they take away your ring and he’s never allowed to play for the Raptors ever again.
No, I’m not still traumatized from this. Nothing to see here.
You think what he did last time was hard just wait for part 2. Winter is coming .
