Bill Simmons predicts Kevin Durant will go into the Hall of Fame wearing a SuperSonics jersey
Team USA jersey
I think that’s Melo’s thing.
One is the all time points leader and gold medal leader. The other is not.
It was a running gag for a while that Melo kept trying to play for team USA because it was the only place he ever won anything.
He won a natty?
He tried going back for a masters degree before he learned he wasn’t eligible to play.
When was that? He could sue for eligibility now. Get a judge who was an alumni and he will easily get a few more years.
[deleted]
Can’t even win that, Max and Goofy beat him to the punch by 26 years
Ayy P they say I can’t even sit on the bench anymore.
Cuse
Fuck KD but he’s Team USA’s GOAT lol. Almost singlehandedly carried them to Gold in 2021
And in 16 basically
And 2010.
Nah KD is the US men’s team GOAT. It’s Taurasi for the women’s team and arguably the US as a whole in international play - 6 gold medals, 44-0 record.
Not anymore.
You joke, but it’s seriously not that bad an idea, he has 4 gold medals.
And he was clearly the best player on the 2020 team. I doubt the US wins without him that time.
He played great all other tournaments as well. 2016 particularly.
I have no idea if it’s technically possible but just in case he deserves that jersey.
Single handedly won the 2010 FIBA world championship too.
*Western Conference All-Star team jersey
I feel like he’s already stated it’s team USA for him
Hot take: who gives a shit
He’s going into the hall wearing an “X” jersey with the name “@gethigher77” on the back
Hall of Fame Twitter burner
Not getoffmyDickerson ?
There actually was a Rockets player with the last name Dickerson circa 1998 or 99 (Michael) so I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody ordered his throwback jersey to troll Durant.
Idk why it’s so funny that this was his burner account name 🤣
That’s not how the basketball hall of fame works…
What do you mean? Clyde went in as a rocket. Players can pick.
This isn’t baseball - players do NOT go in associated to a specific team. Clyde chose to emphasise the Rockets during his ceremony, as he’s free to do, but the hall doesn’t have “Clyde Drexler - Houston Rockets” or anything of the sort. You go in for your whole career.
And the only reason you really go into the baseball hall of fame with an associated team is because players all wear baseball hats on their plaque where there is a clear place to show a team allegiance.
Expect if your Halladay apparently and your widow hijacks that.
I’m glad that you’re the expert- we should definitely trust you more than the person he married and had kids with to decide what he would have wanted.
Wait what?
So, Roy Halladay is on record in an interview saying if he made the HOF he would like to go in as a Blue Jay.
After his untimely death, and when he was about to be posthumously inducted, his widow expressed that that the family would rather he go in not associated with a specific team (a blank cap).
Now, it’s possible Roy changed his mind, and had expressed this to his wife before his death, but we don’t really know. It feels like she took a decision he had publicly already made, away from him for reasons no one can really entirely figure out. There’s a theory that Brandy Halladay had become cozy with the Phillies organisation, and did it not to rock the boat, but it’s kind of weak speculation.
There’s a theory that Brandy Halladay had become cozy with the Phillies organisation, and did it not to rock the boat
That’s not a theory. That’s just vibes. Like, rock what boat?
The Phillies traditionally dont retire jersey numbers of players not in the hall of fame wearing a Phillies cap. 34 was retired shortly after he went in the neutral cap. It wasn’t exactly a well kept secret that was part of the deal
Obviously they’ll probably decided to break that policy down the line for Howard/Rollins/Hamels
He spent most of his career as a Blue Jay and retired a Blue Jay. After he died and was inducted posthumously his wife said he would go in on a cap without a logo because he loved both cities.
Freddie Freeman may be a rare one where they don’t go in with a logo.
as a Phillies fan - this is probably for the best. No bias
Respect to #34.
I know he won the MVP with the braves but it feels like he had more iconic moments in the playoffs as a dodger
Yeah, but knowing Freddie. He’ll go no logo. But on merrit. Dodgers easily.
Yeah Halladay went in sans logo as well.
I know. And rightfully so because Toronto is where he made his name and Philly gave him that chance for a ring. So the family made the choice for him.
and HoF level players very rarely changed teams for most of baseball’s history
The MLB HoF thing is all about what hat they have on their bust. Does the basketball HoF not have something like that?
They do not. You go in as a player, coach, contributor, or team.
At most they had portraits of players, but you can barely see the jerseys because they’re headshots. Magic’s portrait wasn’t even him wearing a jersey, he’s in his warm ups.
I’ll also add that in baseball the players don’t get to pick which team they are with. The Hall of Fame itself picks where they think the player made their “most indelible mark.” They might consider input from the player, but ultimately the player doesn’t get a choice. I only bring it up because I see too often people thinking that the players get to choose in baseball.
It actually used to be the player’s choice until it was rumored that Wade Boggs’* contract with the Rays involved him agreeing to put their logo on his plaque, which was when they took the choice away (while still accepting players input in edge cases like you said).
*We really don’t have to do the always sunny bit.
The Hall has always reserved the right to choose which hat a player wears on his plaque, but has historically worked with the player to determine the choice that best represents their career. When Carlton Fisk was inducted, there were arguments for both Red Sox and White Sox, because he had played for the White Sox longer but had bigger moments with the Red Sox. The Hall deferred to his choice of the Red Sox because the two options were roughly equal and he wasn’t choosing one over the other out of spite.
The difference between now and then is that the Hall had very few issues with this until free agency became a thing and players started choosing teams for reasons other than legacy. The Boggs thing is often cited, though both Boggs and the Rays have denied it. But Dave Winfield apparently wanted to be a Padre because of the issues he had with Steinbrenner, Gary Carter* didn’t want to be an Expo just because they weren’t a team anymore, and Nolan Ryan was still angry with the Astros for asking him to take a pay cut and then letting him walk when he said no, and as this started to happen more often, the Hall created a harder line where they will still work with the player to pick the right hat, but they don’t defer to them when they’re not operating in good faith.
* Carter was inducted after the change, but made his preference and reasoning clear much earlier.
Bird law 😲😂🤣🤣
Rip wade boggs
The one caveat to this being the dream team
How does it work exactly? I know on the baseball HoF plaques, the players are wearing a cap so there’s space for a team logo. What do the Basketball Hall plaques have? Does the picture of the player show enough of the jersey to put a team on it?
What do the Basketball Hall plaques have? Does the picture of the player show enough of the jersey to put a team on it?
I don’t think the players get a plaque or a bust like in the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame. Best I can figure for basketball is some players get their own display with jerseys, stats, stories, videos from throughout their career (I’m guessing every inductee gets their own display for their induction and then some get rotated out). and then there’s a wall with just the names of each induction class.
So yeah, I don’t think anyone “goes in” with a specific team of their choice.
Imagine if when you clicked on someone on the display it slide down their respective wall would be awesome but an insane amount of work lol
Like this
No I mean the hall of fame display dropping down from like a warehouse :P
Thanks for the reminder
Basketball players don’t get in as a member of any specific team. Clyde went into the hall as a basketball player
Prove it
You are correct, but I think Bill is just saying that KD doesn’t have a home, even if it doesn’t actually matter in regard to the HOF.
NFL doesn’t need a team either, but Aaron Rodgers is gonna retire a Packer. Who’s KD gonna retire with? He doesnt have to retire with anyone but typically players and teams like these kind of symbolic reunions and Durant doesn’t currently appear to have that anywhere.
not everyone has to sign a 1-day contract. Tony Parker never signed it and retired a Hornet
Sonics fans may be Kevin’s former team that has the most affection for him, because he was blameless in how he left us. Maybe our idea of what could have been is better than what would have been.
No he will not.
Its provocative though
It gets the people going
I mean, it got a click out of me. Mission accomplished.
Durant will go into the hall wearing a Durant jersey.
Getoffmydickerson jersey
Durant will be written on the front, however
Big if true.
These dudes really get paid millions to gossip about pointless shit
What do you think sports journalism mostly is?
everything related to sports is pointless shit in the grand scheme of things.
It’s all pointless in the grand scheme of things so who cares if it is a phase, mom.
Honestly we’re all going to die and pretty much all of this is pointless.
Came for Bill Simmons bullshit, stayed for the Reddit nihilism
This isn’t reporting and it doesn’t claim to be.
Meant to say journalism. Posted while I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic and defaulted to reporting. And it was supposed to be tongue in cheek so don’t take it so literally
it’s not journalism and doesnt claim to be that either lol. It’s punditry
Did you miss the part where I said it was supposed to be tongue in cheek and to not take it literally?
I hate to break it to you but this isn’t journalism. Majority of podcasts aren’t journalism. Unfortunately, there really isn’t much sports journalism left these days.
It’s called entertainment bro It’s not a new concept
And basketball itself is important?
It’s entertaining even if it’s not important. This bullshit and so much of sports media isn’t and I don’t understand why so many people feed into it. It’s grocery store checkout line gossip rags but for sports.
You’re doing it for free
The clip was posted and you responded. Engagement bait is the name of the game in sports media and you fell for it.
This isn’t engagement for Simmons, he’s not the one posting it
He didn’t say not to aggregate this so IDK
Its because people listen.
You’re spending your time typing this shit for free.
Ok Aaron Rodgers
Do Nets fans dislike Durant? I know those teams didn’t live up to expectations, but did he do anything to piss people off on the way out?
He publicly petitioned for our coach and GM to be fired and then asked for a trade. But the relationship is salvageable - opt out next year and come home to mentor Egor and Mikel 🙏🏼🙏🏼
He also said he was “glad Kyrie got out of there” after Irving was traded as though the Nets were a shitty organization. F–k him, lol.
EDIT: It was Kyrie so f–k Kyrie for that one, Durant I think was the trade request after getting rid of our coach and going after our GM who had done a great job.
Kyrie said that, not KD.
We like him still
I called them Snake & Flake the whole time they were here.
He’s good in my book. Of The 3, he’s the only one who acknowledge his Nets Tenure.
Harden has said nice things about the organization. Some find his dogging it before the trade unforgivable but I can’t really blame him for being fucking sick of carrying the team while Kyrie voluntarily sat out.
I’m not giving Harden a pass for quitting on The Nets because Kyrie was a nutcase. Harden was never truly bought in. He saw the opportunity as a chance for an easy ring, and when that didn’t happen, he ran to Morey, only for Morey to play in his face, and he still had to carry in Philly with Embiid always out injured. The grass wasn’t greener.
The Nets gave up their future for a year rental and then Harden waited 24 hours until the trade deadline to request a trade to only Philly, forced Ben Simmons on us for 4 miserable years.
So, F him and Kyrie. I also remember when he came back after the KD/Kyrie trades and said something to the effect, “See, I wasnt the crazy one”
Some don’t like him, some like him the most out of the big 3 we had
When the rest of the big 3 is Harden and Kyrie the bar is low. Particularly Covid Kyrie.
The bar is in hell
whats crazy is that the nets are the team that paid him the most. I was looking through his spotrac page and was surprised to notice that
hang his jersey
While wearing those 2000’s jeans with every NBA logo on them
That’s not a thing!!! This drives me crazy. It’s baseball caps and only baseball caps that this is relevant to. Basketball and football do not show any team on the bust/plaque
This is my exact thought. What he’s saying is meaningless.
…and I don’t even think the Basketball Hall of Fame has plaques for the players.
Putting aside the fact that I think Durant has come out and said he’ll wear his FIBA jersey, what the fuck is going on in bill’s head
Can confirm that Seattleites still love KD. Probably the only fanbase that does, unconditionally.
I do hope he sticks around long enough to play with the Supersonics 2.0
Why do you want to give him an opportunity to make it 0 fanbases that love him?
Shouldn’t Sonic’s fans be happy he fucked over okc
Him leaving the Thunder for nothing in return is one of the great moments in my recent NBA fandom.
Yeah that was really cool
Meh. That very much depends who you ask.
I know a lot of Seattle basketball fans. I don’t know anyone who dislikes KD.
Uhh… well you know one now. I dislike him in the same vein most NBA fans do.
Yes, winning second in the draft lottery to get him was exciting. What a night. Not his fault our team was taken away. But he also made no basketball impact in this city, and we have real legends. Why would Seattleities feel some special need to go to bat for him?
I think you’re just speaking for yourself.
So, you dislike him for reasons that don’t have anything to do with his time in Seattle?
All his other destinations can point to something that occurred/he did while he was with their team.
Correct. My point is there is no particular reason every or most Seattle fans should share a like OR dislike for him. Most of us approach him just like any other star who played for other teams. You may like him, you may not.
He didn’t have any significant on-court impact for us and a lot of us spent at least the first half of his career rooting against his team. It’s just silly to pretend he’s some kind of Seattle legend.
it’s because the sonics were “taken” that they tanked and got the second pick.
I have lived in this area my whole life. I watched the sonics play the bulls live in 96. I’m not saying people here hate on him, but we definitely don’t actively care. We lament that the sonics drafted him and two other future hall of famers immediately before the team got moved, but that doesn’t actually mean we like him. He’s still a huge baby, hyper talented though he may be.
He got a pretty huge ovation and addressed the crowd when the Warriors played their preseason game here. Durant has also come back and built some basketball courts in the city.
I think it is fair to say he’s broadly liked among Sonics fans.
Right that’s what I’m saying. He’s appreciated, but the original comment is making it sound like we’re some last outpost of people who Stan KD. We appreciate him, but we all saw all the same stuff everyone else did. We aren’t different.
He’s not really appreciated anywhere else. Sonic fans almost certainly have the most favorable opinion about him among NBA fan bases. It doesn’t matter if we stan him. It’s the fact that we don’t hate him.
Thats what I’m saying. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. I appreciate that he played here, for exaple, but i also recognize that he’s a no show as a leader and a bit of a baby. I don’t think that’s the same as having s favorable opinion.
You have to contextualize that at the time you are talking about, the only negative thing about him was that he left OKC which would actually be well received in Seattle.
His twitter antics and team hopping since then mightve tempered some adoration since then. I always gave him grace for the Warriors move coz it wasnt too different from the decision for me no matter what stat or record people cite. But since then he has just acted in a very unlikable manner, specially after leaving Golden State.
Don’t speak for “we,” because as a Seattleite born and raised, I do not fall into the category you’re describing.
How are you gonna get upset when you just got done generalizing Seattleites yourself??
I’ll say we all i want because there’s more people who feel like me. I don’t need your approval to say we. Most of us are reasonable enough to know that KD has no bearing on anything in our lives. We aren’t some last hold out fans. We’re a lot, A LOT, smarter than that.
Generally anyway.
Edit: I’m also not saying we, because evidently you live in LA. Poser.
Maybe Seattle as a whole doesn’t care about KD but I’d say most basketball fans/former Sonics fans still like KD. I still seek plenty of people in the city wearing KD Sonics jerseys and the reception he got when the Warriors played a preseason game here shows he is still generally well liked in Seattle
Again, we don’t hate him and he did play here, but we don’t care about him any more than other athletes.
Griffey Jr. is someone who left, but is still part of the culture. There’s a person we have any kind of actual feelings about as a fanbase. KD is fine, but it isn’t accurate to say that Seattle is all about him.
Lol, you see like a peach.
*sweet
Well, it is currently Peach-O-Rama at Metropolitan Market right now, so that fits.
I’ll be honest, the “we” sounds kind of weird.
If that’s what you’re going for, you do you.
You’re fine. There’s plenty of people who feel like me even if you don’t want me to say we. I’m a Seattle sports fan i can say we all day long.
You need to realize that there are groups of like minded people within larger groups.
Or you could just speak for yourself.
“We’re a lot, A LOT, smarter than that.”
Ah, well, if you say so.
Enjoy your day, mate. Hope you get the Sonics back soon.
You’re fine. Trying to be controlling of my language doesn’t make me feel like you’re on some higher road.
We are smarter than to be that silly, most people are.
Enjoy your day as well. The NBA sucks. I love basketball, but even a new sonics team will be forever tainted to me. Unrelated, but same goes for fifa. These organizations are proving themselves to be too disgusting to support.
lol you literally did the same thing.
That was his point basically
They unfortunately weren’t around long enough for KD to have eventually burned that bridge.
You would think that Simmons would know that players don’t go into the Basketball HOF associated with any one team.
Who is this fan speaking for all Warrior fans? We don’t claim his legacy? Bullshit, of course we do. We’ll always pick Curry over him, but that doesnt’ mean we don’t respect what he did here.
We don’t win back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 without him, would have three-peated in 2019 if he didn’t get hurt. And he sacrificed his fucking achilles for us. His character as a person doesn’t take away what he did on the court. Hell, before Curry, Rick Barry was the greatest player in our franchise history, at least on the west coast, and he’s a fucking racist ass fascist asshole.
Besides, basketball players don’t go into the HOF with a specific team like they do in baseball.
KD has been a pariah since the Sonics left and he’ll finally find peace when they return.
Can’t wait to see him sitting courtside trolling Westbrook at Sonics-Thunder game.
Fuck it, we might as well make it a full on event and retire his jersey the same day too.
Was at Spurs vs Phoenix in Austin 2 years ago and think UT is his only stop that still really pulls for him no matter what he does
So the only team he played on that didn’t end up hating him in the end, and it’s only because they don’t exist anymore.
He is that friend who always complains about having bad roommates without realizing that HE is the bad roommate.
He’s so performative. A theater kid at heart.
He’ll have a Twitter logo or a weed leaf
He’ll probably being wearing a nice suit or something is my bet
I mean I won’t say no. 🤪
simmons is a hot take artist – its funny that people actually take him seriously
on august 10, 2026 who does this topic matter to?
Just a jersey with the old Twitter logo
Simmons is a clown
His high school jersey. The basketball hall of fame is bullshit and doesn’t just look at the NBA.
Is bill ok? He looks like he has an alcohol problem
No he just drank too much hot water with lemon before the show
I still watch/listen to him because it’s just a habit instilled in me for the past two decades or so, but man has some kinda problem for sure.
Him saying “Jalen Williams played 14 minutes tonight, not sure if he’s the second best playerfor OKC anymore” after a playoff game that Jalen played 0 minutes in was the dagger for me.
That’s the freakin playoffs, man. At least watch the highlights of the game first before commenting on it lol
What exactly is the point here? Players make it in for their careers. He could choose to spotlight the Sonics but okay?
Doesn’t the basketball hall not do jerseys?
It’s just going to be a black shirt with the KD logo on it
He should go into the Hall wearing an X jersey
Thunder
The baskeball HoF is so easy to get into no one actually cares about it.
Why do these people get paid?
Its gonna be the Sonics probably after Gary Payton
Reddit needs a way to mute words from showing up on your feed
Bill should have crazy huge traps considering how much water he’s carried for KD over the years.
These people don’t know how the basketball hall works
No franchise wants him lol
Crazy how he found a way to corrupt every fan base he was with, even the ones he WON with! Hope he gets the help he needs after nba.
Legit one of the dumbest fucking takes. lmao
Well it won’t be a fucking Rockets jersey, I can promise you that much.
When are we gonna talk about Bill Simmons being a fucking weirdo about underage girls?
It would be legendary if KDs last season was with the new sonics franchise
Hot take, if KD never left OKC, they might never win a championship.
He might not have a choice, every franchise he has played for probably hates his guts.
I’m born and raised a Sonics fan but I’m not a Durant fan. I know he played for us and supports us getting our team back but I’ve never liked his weird behavior and lost a lot of respect for him. I’m always annoyed by how many fans still love the guy. My goats are Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Rashard Lewis, and Ray Allen.
Should be GSW since that’s the only team he accomplished anything notable in
Winning an MVP and going to the Finals isn’t notable?
Without any good sports on this time of year, they got jack shit to talk about and have to manufacture discussions
He’s a mercenary. He has no true home. No one should retire his number, honestly.
Number retirements should be for players staying with a team for a long time, not because a player was good. That’s what the Hall of Fame is for.
I find it sad that this new generation of players that are about to retire have no real home team. Lebron, Durant, Westbrook, Harden etc are all mercenaries that never found a true home.
westbrook harden and lebron definitely have “home” teams even if they been team hopping alot past their prime 😂
LeBron, Russ, and Harden stuck around and did enough for CLE, OKC, HOU to undoubtably retire their jerseys
Bron played for both the Cavs and Lakers as long as a lot of players’ careers.
OKC will forgive him for his bullshit the same way Toronto forgave Vince Carter once he’s out the league and enough time passes. He’s a foundational player for the franchise even if they never actually won a chip
imagine being this clueless
