Russell is the greatest defender ever winning championships in teams ranked last on offense with straight defense, and there is a lot of analysis on the internet arguing Russell wasn’t just greater, but better and more impactful to winning than Wilt Chamberlain.

If ur goat criteria leans heavily on dominance relative to era it’s hard to argue against Russell, his comp was just the worst. In their respective eras, Bill Russell was probably the player who gave you the highest chances to win over other goat candidates, his teammate quality was also overrated, they accomplished nothing before or after him. Those Celtics were defense first, and Russell anchored #1 defenses like nobody else, his teams were usually mediocre or straight up awful on offense, and got their defense backpacked by Bill Russell.
