I really wish American sports value the regular season more. Suppose it’s a matter of impossible scheduling parity and guess it was in fact more valued when there ten teams a league, no inter league play, and winning the pennant meant being the best regular season team.

I agree with you, and the fact that baseball has so many games also makes it the least championship or bust mindset of the big 4. Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. You’re not locked into every pitch like every down of an NFL game.

During the shortened 2020 season, they did implement a 16 team playoff, and numerous mediocre, below .500 teams reached the postseason. It wasn’t good.

If you cut the season at 100, good teams miss the postseason.

The Red Sox are the hottest team in baseball. Because of their late season surge they’re in a playoff spot. Two months ago everyone was ready to hand the American League to the Yankees but as the sample size has played out the Red Sox have proven to be better than they were in the opening months and the Yankees have been worse.

The object is to get the best teams in the playoffs. Baseball does this better than any sport.

Just last year, the Tigers led their division all season long. A swoon at the end of the year led them to (deservedly) losing their division to Cleveland on the last day of the season. If you cut the season, you don’t get the best teams in.

The 2019 Nationals, who won the World Series, were in last place in July that year.

The 2013 Dodgers, who came two wins from the World series, were in last place in July.

I can literally find tons of examples of teams that fall out of first place in July and August , right around the 100 game mark, and fall out of playoff position. Happens all the time.

By playing 162 games lol. Even a very good baseball team loses 40% of the time. To make up for that randomness factor, you have to play a lot of games to see who is actually good.

Using your logic the Washington Nationals would have never played a classic seven-game world series in 2019 because they would have never gotten the chance to participate in the postseason in the first place. It would have been a terrible loss for baseball; that’s one of the most memorable World Series winners of the last 25 years.

Because 162 (or 154) has been working since the 1800s? It’s clearly the sweet spot that gets the best teams in the playoffs. We see pretender teams fall off around the 100 game mark every year so that’s not long enough. Baseball is random at times. You need the strong sample size to avoid lucky teams getting in over better ones.

IIRC the 2013-2014 Pacers kinda fit this. According to wikipedia they started with a franchise best 16-1 record. After having a record of 44-13 at the start of March they went 12-13 the rest of the way. Still won two playoff series before losing in the Conference Finals to the Heat.

I just remember them because that was my first season tuning in to the NBA more regularly as a fan and there was alot of discussion on why they were struggling at the end of the season. I think some people theorized that the Danny Granger mid season trade affected locker room morale. I think this is also when Roy Hibbert started his notable decline.

Look, I’m not saying it’s the absolute worst, but the 2009-10 Lakers championship team seemed to stop giving a fuck towards the end of the season.

After a 7 game win streak, they proceeded to end the season with a 4-7 record.

This was when I first started hearing the term “on/off switch”
