My hunch is that people around the league talk about ways to provide extra benefits. Look at the laundry list of stuff which Uncle Dennis asked for. It’s things other teams have provided.

And when Toronto and Lakers said no, it’s not as if they shut off further negotiation, appalled at what he asked. There was obviously further negotiation going on. In fact, Lebron/AD said they were surprised that Kawhi didn’t sign. Toronto even said they thought they had a good shot.

Yet, when Kawhi signs with the Clippers, suddenly Toronto and the Lakers then told the NBA about Uncle Dennis’ illegal demands?

People are just far more fixated on Ballmer and less interested in Kawhi because of the nonstop reporting saying Kawhi’s likely to get hit with a severe punishment while Ballmer’s likely to get a slap on the wrist.

I’m thinking nothing came of it because both the Raptors and Lakers said ‘no’. So no rules were broken. The NBA, as far as I know, never said those things weren’t ask for by Kawhi’s team.

At this point I wouldn’t put the “degenerative knee condition” diagnosis as something they paid a sketchy doctor for so they can hold out for these off the books payments without making it obvious.

Plus the Aspiration stuff is worse because they literally didn’t have any money other than what Ballmer gave them (which was coincidentally the amount that Kawhi was owed). At least HEB is a functioning business lol

bigger picture: most owners don’t want to pay basketball players; not actual market value anyway. Ballmer, and a few others are the exceptions. The remaining owners decided to impose all these new apron-rules to hamstring teams who want to sign superstars, or extend the folks they drafted/developed. They’re basically taking their cues from the NFL and trying to bust the players association here too.

this is why sht like this is happening. I’d be fine with punishing both Ballmer & Kawhi, if this wasn’t a byproduct of a nefarious long-term scheme trying to screw over the players (not referring to players making Kawhi type $$ btw)

Someone related to someone associated with the Lakers, and reported a lot of things both Lakers and NBA wide before they hit the official news channels. They called Kawhi to the Lakers, and obviously that didn’t happen, so they got dragged for it. But, come to find out, Kawhi and his reps basically told the Lakers he was good to go, while working other things out with the Clippers, so… take that for what you will.

Not much they can do about him aside from ban him from games and stop him from representing Kawhi in any official way, the latter of which has already been done. He hasn’t broken any laws, and he doesn’t work for the NBA.

That’s why this was done this way. A sponsorship deal washes the money so it doesn’t show up on the Clippers books for NBA audit purposes and gets taxed so the IRS doesn’t care.

That’s because Aspiration was cooking their books. Not because of the Kawhi deal which was on their books and raised a bunch of eyebrows at the company because they were hemorrhaging money but paying Kawhi tons of money for nothing.
