The average nba player is not delusional enough to believe they could replace Steph. Come on

That’s what I think a lot of people forget. In order to be this good you have to not be a little delusional. You have to be a lot delusional and extremely good at the same time.

I’ve never agreed with this take. Plenty of NBA players are self aware. Some are just arrogant and/or dumb enough to never learn.

That is not true many role players are not delusional. and frankly those role players are closer to monte, than he is to steph.

In some manner, believing in yourself to that irrational degree is what helps get these guys to the NBA.

1. How stupid everyone sounds when they are recorded.

Nah some of us will. At least a few of us have played with dudes who went on to be pro or near professional athletes. I played baseball with a guy who had a cup of coffee in the MLB and he was so fucking good. Playing with him actually helped me realize ill never be even close to good enough to make serious money and thats ok. 

Most players of the caliber like Monta Ellis were all like Mr. Basketball or Parade All-Americans in their respective states during high school so it’s pretty easy to get inflated ego I’d imagine

I always tell this story. I used to work with a dude who had a couple of 10 day contracts in the NBA. He spent most of his early 20s playing in some European league(this was before the g league was really a thing). He was probably 6’8”. 

I invited him out to our regular pickup game. Almost everyone that played was decent, at least high school, some college ball. 

He was an uncle among nephews. Even though he was the tallest guy on the court he played exclusively point guard on offense. He was whipping pinpoint passes to any of us that got open near the basket. He was nailing “contested” 3s. Sometimes he didn’t even jump. He was just hitting set shots like it was the 1950s. On defense he “guarded” the opposing teams best player by standing back 2 feet and putting his arms up. He absolutely never jumped. He still blocked about half of the shots accidentally, almost apologetically. Petty often he would poke away a dribble but not chase after it. Almost like he was scolding shitty ball handling. 

It reminded me of playing my little cousins. Like you’re making up little challenges for yourself to make it more competitive. I genuinely think he could have run the court 1 on 3. 

And he played in like 3 NBA games. An actual rotation player is that much better than him. 

He’s right about the first sentence. Pre-Steph Warriors outside of We Believe was some shit and Monta had to deal with a lot. Dubs fans booed loudly and heavily when he was traded because it was like the straw the broke the camel’s back. Bill Simmons wrote probably his last great article about it.

Now the stuff about taking Steph’s place and having the same results? Nah dawg. But Monta was a crazy talent. Especially before the moped incident. I loved watching him hoop.

It’s not just sports. Some adults just do this no matter what.

I think the science is regret and insecurity. I don’t mean that in a cruel way, either. It’s hard getting older and thinking of what could’ve been. Regret is something I struggle with quite a bit, so I do empathize with him.

It’s almost entirely ego, maybe sprinkle in some regret.

I don’t know if it’s scientific but a lot of people go through life believing that they are better than they actually are, and after they’ve lived enough that the events of their lives have convincingly proven their belief to be false, they make-believe to try to cope.

His highschool tape is crazy. Only player I can recall who had a first step that rivaled pre injury D Rose. He used to just glide past people.

I loved Monta on the Mavs. Dude balled out and helped lead some mediocre rosters to the playoffs towards the end of Dirk’s career. Despite Dirk still being pretty solid at that point, Monta was the go to guy when the team needed a bucket

I mean I was pissed. Not that it was an either/or between Steph and monta. I wanted to root for both. But I didn’t see the positive in the bogut trade. Trading monta, the best we’ve had to root for in that era for an injury prone big man. I didn’t see it. But luckily I’m not paid to make those decisions.

Steph had major ankle issues at the time.

I don’t think any of us wanted to trade Steph, we just didn’t want to trade Monta because he was our best player at the time and Bogut was fresh off of missing a bunch of time with injury. It worked out great and I think about that a bunch while the Dubs are getting all this criticism lately for their team construction despite two major injuries.

Fans were more pissed because when Joe bought the team we were Im the playoff hunt and fans wanted the ownership to go for it and acquire talent to help push us to the playoffs which as everyone knows is a rare sight at that time. Joe said over and over that all he wants to do is win and this was basically his first order business.

Instead they essentially gave up on the season by trading the fan favorite and the offensive engine of the team for a hurt center.

Of course looking back it was a long term move and things worked out but on paper warriors fans were all too familiar with owners being cheap or making empty promises. Putting out the absolute minimum viable product every season.

Everyone was at a boiling point already and it felt like “here we fucking go again” with Joe.

Thats also why he got boo’ed at Mullins Jersey retirement. Fans were ready for blood after decades of shitty ownership.

Trading away the one bright spot and fan favorite of a starving fan base will do that to you.

Not all were. I was happy to see Monta go. He was a good scorer, but the lack of BBIQ, inconsistent effort on defense and late game tunnel vision was enough for me to want to move on. I loved the idea of paring Steph with Bogut and D. Lee.

Who knew broken ankles would be one of the best in the league.

This is what I always said about the back half of Westbrook’s career. Dude’s mentality got him to the NBA, an NBA finals, an MVP, and 100s of millions of dollars. I’m not surprised he’s had a tough time changing all of it in his 30s when he got so far up to this point doing it his way. These guys believe in themselves all the way to the top 0.1%; can’t be surprised when they still believe in themselves past being reasonable lol.

Shhhh.

Monta Ellis was always a bad player (Bad, B. A. D.) but he put up good numbers (Read: Points Per Game) on bad teams. So you can’t criticize all the bad parts of his game. Like how he was a bad playmaker, bad jump shooter, and generally ineffective unless he had the ball. None of that matters because he made bad teams bearable to watch. He didn’t make bad teams GOOD. He made them bearable to watch. And to most NBA fans that’s enough to be thought of fondly.
