That one guy you have to take out is of course Michael Jordan who never shot LESS than 50% in a playoff series he took 30 or more shots a game, and peaked at 56%.

Yes. The 80’s were fast, lots of possessions, and there were stricter rules that limited defensive schemes.

The grind slow defense stuff didn’t start to happen until the mid 90’s and peaked in the 2000’s (eg the dead ball era)

Not arguing Jokic isn’t more efficient than Luka, but citing PER to do so is terrible reasoning (and yes, I’m aware that PER stands for player efficiency rating, but really it doesn’t measure anything of the sort).

PER is just a bad stat and we should all stop citing it.

I will say, I wouldn’t mind seeing Luka take it upon himself to get that ball off his fingertips.

He’s not as bad as Ant is about it, but he doesn’t trust that the ball will make its way back to him, and he lazily floats when he does get off it.

There’s a version of him that goes into an attack, bends the defense his way, swings it, runs directly into a screen, and the leverage of the second side action springs the under loaded side of the court open into the easiest looks of their professional career. Sometimes Luka-the-Screener will be on that under loaded side and work half as hard for twice as juicy of attempts!

But that’s the stuff that really separates him and Jokic offensively. The man gaps the league on touches, while averaging a fraction of the time of possession, and the activity keeps the defense back footed. You can’t really breathe a sigh of relief when Jokic gets rid of the ball, because he’s always a threat to screen the real intent of the action or ping pong a pass to the geometry you were cheating off of.

It’s just be cool to see Luka course correct back into that kind of stuff. We’ve really only ever seen him defer to Dragic to embrace that kind of work. He’s functionally been James Harden since the back half of his rookie year.

The equivalent today would be a team of like SGA, Tatum, with Josh Giddey Evan Mobley and Myles Turner or something like that. I think you are confused. Luka has only averaged <32ppg in one of the last 4 seasons. The last 4 seasons he’s averaged 32.4 (>32), 33.9 (>32), 28.2 (<32), and 33.5 (>32), for an average of 32.2 (>32).

Nowadays, you see defenders sagging off their guy (if he’s viewed as not a threat) and kind of roaming to cut off passing/driving lanes, ready to move to another player if needed.

Before the rule change, that wasn’t allowed. You either had to defend your guy straight up, or fully commit to a double team.

Jordan retired 3 times. His career average is so high precisely because he skipped out multiple years of his post prime. Its never been done by anyone else, and likely will never be done by anyone else. Jordan choosing to retire artificially pulls up his average in an unfair way, the same way Lebron hit a lot of “youngest to ever reach” milestones because he came straight out of highschool

That said being able to take lots of shots and have them be high quality is a demonstration of skill. So I don’t think it automatically is a bad thing that he shot the most and scored the most

13% of his career games were major statistical outliers due to being played after 3 years off at 38 and 39. That’s pretty relevant.
