The city only took over the arena a couple years ago as part of the bridge agreement. Also part of the agreement is that the Blazers would maintain it as a “first class facility” and if the Blazers leave, even if it’s at the end of the current lease, the city can potentially sue the Blazers for not maintaining the arena.

The city ran an estimate before the team was sold that put the maintenance needs at \(465 million over the next 20 years, while Dundon wants \)600 million now plus another $300 milliom over 20 years, so nearly double.

Kind of like your fridge being out so you tell the landlord they have to buy you a new tv and Playstation while they’re fixing it.

Liar. The renovation is mostly for maintenance and basic necessary updates to bring it up to first class status, not just luxury suites. The team said there are $200m+ extras they’d like to do and they would pay for those if they want to do them, the plans have not been finalised yet, they are requesting money for the $600m in upgrades that they believe are in the public interest to pay for.

When I post factual defenses of the team, all these knowledge people come out of the wordwork to nitpick every word I say and call me a bot, but they are strangely silent when blatant lies like this are upvoted all the time, and I have seen multiple calls to assassinate Dundon heavily upvoted here with not one person objecting to it. This subreddit is becoming a putrefying nidus for extremists and admins need to step in ASAP.

While there also is the potential for a suit if the Blazers leave before the lease is up, the threat of the suit that’s been in the news is that the current bridge agreement requires the Blazers to maintain a “first-class facility”. Basically even if they wait out the end of the lease before leaving, they could still potentially be sued for failing to maintain the facility. No one wants it to come to that, but it would be kind of funny if the Blazers left and in the process put themselves on the hook for paying for the renovations.

I’m not sure if it’s been made official yet, but I did see that the city had offered up an agreement to not use the proposal from the Blazers in any potential suit.

I don’t think you’re wrong either though - the $365 million from the state is contingent on a 20-year lease extension and I don’t believe Dundon has committed to that either.

The team isnt cutting the lease short in any case, it ends in 2030. The team can freely leave at the end of the lease and will probably do so if the city wont pay for renovation, the city could then sue them for failing to keep the arena in first class condition under the current 2025-2030 bridging agreement which was agreed to because the team was for sale and the new owners deserve the right to negotiate a long term lease.

The team wants the city to amend the current bridging agreement to state the arena is currently in a first class condition, to remove the lawsuit threat, before they share information about the renovation that might aid the city in suing them. The 5 year stopgap lease was always intended to give time to plan this renovation and secure public funding. The mayor and rest of the council are insisting they dont want to sue, 1 council member is threatening that. The team is just acting in their interest here, not being “fucking insane”.

He owns the team so yes he should profit. If they dont want the team and want all the “profits” he can just move the team 🤷‍♂️
