All NBA superstars are worth much more than max contracts allow them to be paid. Ballmer needed to lure one to the Clippers and has deep pockets. Uncle Dennis was proposing shady methods of compensating Kawhi above and beyond what the cap rules allow, and Ballmer was willing to listen.

It’s not only about him as a player. Historically, this franchise has not been a draw for most major players to choose to come to, especially while in their prime. 

They fixed the ownership issue (Sterling), but they can’t fix the location / market (Lakers) without some help. 

That’s not a knock on Clippers fans. I’m only referencing the history and the prominence of these two teams in that market.

Without Ballmer getting Kawhi, I think they would have continued to be a tough draw. I think having Kawhi, even with his injury history, it helps to get other players to join.

He was just coming off a season leading his team to a title with an absurd playoff run on elite efficiency and defense. He had a legitimate argument for being the best player in the league that year.

His ass would be in court already if there wasn’t validity to these stories.
