Until people stop mentioning older players like Cheryl Miller, Candice Parker or Diana Taurasi then it’s still a debate. When Aja’s career is over I think it will be a lot more clear.

It’s also why the W is so screwed up. They have their Michael Jordan playing right now and the larger discussion is still centered on CC, Reese and literal finger pointing.

Not yet but assuming Wilson has good longevity she definitely is going to bury anyone else in terms of WNBA goat. 

I think it is. She already has a longer career than Maya, accomplished more and peaked higher. She’s also still without question the best player in the sport so she’s just going to keep distancing herself.

A’Ja will likely be the GOAT when all is said and done, but today you can argue for Cooper and maybe even Maya Moore. Will have to wait for A’ja’s career to be over to see the final tally marks, but for me…as someone who started watching in ‘97…it’s still Coop by a thin margin.

A’ja has been so dominant that I accept when she’s finally done she’ll take it, but again…today I haven’t seen anyone be as dominant as Coop and that OG Comets team. They were like the MJ Bulls on steroids and dog-walked the league for 4 straight years.

A’ja’s got youth on her side though (only 29), so realistically she could end with 6+ titles and a couple more MVP’s and DPOY’s

The active GOAT will always be compared to the actual GOAT. Kobe was compared to MJ incessantly when he played, even though by the mid-2000s, it was clear he wasn’t going to pass him.

Same with LeBron. It’s not close. Most polls have MJ over LeBron 5 to 1 or some ridiculous ratio. That ratio will increase once LeBron retires and the media doesn’t need him anymore.

Personally I think she is and will be for a while. But it’s not really clearcut. There still is a case for Maya or imo if you want to go further Cooper. Both of those players hjave 4 championships while Cooper is ⁴⁄₄ in the finals with 4 FMVPs and Maya is ⁴⁄₆ in the finals. We were robbed of Coopers prime because she had to play overseas and the WNBA didn’t form until she was in her 30s. But she’s the closest to MJ the league has seen IMO.

A’ja will most likely be my forever goat, but there is such talent coming into the league and talent that has already arrived so who knows who will make the next case for goat.

Going on your MJ vs Lebron point, is interesting it always seems like people point to Jordan going 6 for 6 in the finals over Lebron when Lebron pretty much owns everything else due to longevity. So if A’ja stays healthy for another 4-5 years but say goes ⁴⁄₈, does that hurt her case or make it stronger, compared to Coop who is 4 for 4 with 4 FMVP, kind of depends on the person ranking them.

Yes. There is no genuine debate, in part because the WNBA is still pretty young as a league. I think MJ is the GOAT, but I think it’s genuinely close with him and LeBron and I think somebody having LeBron as the GOAT is completely reasonable. In the same vein, Lauren Jackson, Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper, Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, Lisa Leslie, Tina Charles, Stewie & Diana Taurasi have had some loaded teams too. Just unavoidable in that league, at that period. Tamika Catchings gets left out of the discussion and it disappoints me but I would understand if someone said she was the most decorated instead of the GOAT.

The bar is kinda low yet for WNBA, no different than when the NBA is just starting. When Wilt came along he was just way ahead of his time. I think the same is for her, perhaps the league’s evolution is a bit faster than how the NBA did considering basketball as a sport is already a worldwide phenomenon.

Hopefully decades from now we won’t see a player like Angel Reese missing layups at the pro level, cause majority would have a well polished layup package. No different as to why we laugh at how they shot their jumpshots in the 60s.

The NBA goat debate is flawed due to the time span, rule changes and societal changes. I posted the concept a couple years ago of defining the goat by obvious NBA eras and being ok with that. Era goats work really well to define the league. The W probably isn’t quite at that level but you could make a case for adolescent league goat and maturing league goat. As for the NBA, here is what I put

Early NBA goat? George Mikan. Unstoppable and huge.
But he couldn’t have survived a single season ten years later, let alone now.
Early integration goat? Bill Russell or Wilt depending on how you feel about team vs individual value.
ABA era goat? Kareem because he was as unstoppable as any player ever.
Mass appeal era? MJ. League wide talent level was insane, tv changed the population level, and commercials bright players to the forefront of pop culture. And Jordan outpaced everyone.
Post Jordan era? Kobe or Tim Duncan and your answer depends on how you value consistent excellence or flash.
Modern era? Lebron. Because he is everything to this era that Jordan was to his.
Post lebron? Probably gonna be Jokic but no one stands apart enough to already claim the title.

Any GOAT talk for a league that is only 30 years old is premature.
