That was a stupid time when other teams could sign your 2nd round picks for a higher salary and your own team couldn’t match it.
The league subsequently made the Gilbert Arenas rule to make sure teams could at least match the offer from other teams instead of losing their 2nd round picks to FA.
At that time, 4.9M was the non taxpayer MLE. Arenas’ first contract was only 2 years so GSW didn’t have full bird rights to match what the Wizards offered.
Now, the Wizards must have the AAV in cap space to make such an offer; the MLE isn’t enough.
I’ve always thought all rookies should be subject to a rookie scale contract based on where they are drafted. (or undrafted). Not just 1st round picks. The contract should just have less restrictions. 1st rounders are essentially a 2+2 w team options. 2nd rounders/undrafted could be a 1+2 w team options followed by RFA. undrafted could be 1+1 at the league min with RFA. I think it would encourage players to actually participate more in the pre-draft process and not be incentivized to fall in the draft.
Isn’t that what the 2nd round exception is for? Also consider that players picked in the 50s or undrafted are usually not proven enough to warrant even a guaranteed roster spot, Reaves/FVV notwithstanding.
I don’t always trust Gilbert, but I’m sure there’s been plenty of deal that are potentially over, or well over, the line of what is allowed. That said, even those four cars don’t come close to what we’re seeing with Ballmer (ALLEGEDLY PLEASE DON’T SUE ME STEVE).

more recently in the NFL, I thought it was fishy when Brock Purdy got a significant endorsement deal with Toyota (who happened to also be “the official automotive partner” of the 49ers).
I’ve always wondered about the terms of that deal (and potentially other “off the field” endorsements) because Purdy kinda rushed back from a serious arm injury (UCL surgery) to play the 2023 season despite being locked into his rookie contract. Just based on the competence he showed in his first year (including 2 playoff wins), he easily could have sat out until he was eligible for a 9-figure extension and I really don’t think anyone would have blamed him. It worked out for him because he didn’t suffer a career-ending injury before signing an extension with $181 million guaranteed. But the risk-reward calculus of playing out his rookie scale contract makes me wonder if the 49ers were really only paying him his “Mr. Irrelevant” salary.

These extra deals giving players cars and their girlfriends modeling deals happens all the time
But those cars cost like 100k. Using corporate entities to funnel tens of millions to a player is really not on the same level. It’s like comparing someone who steals gum from the deli to someone who commits wire fraud for millions
Funnily enough only the bubble gum stealer would go to jail in this scenario. It’s why people are willing to shoot a homeless man for trying to take $20 out their car but do nothing when their boss doesn’t pay them on time or for overtime.

That wasn’t really similar. The Knicks offered the most money, to where people were making fun of us for overpaying. Thibs coached Rick Brunson as a player, and he was on Thibs coaching staff for all three of his head coaching tenures. That relationship goes way deeper than Jalen.
Unless you mean the recent contract extension. Jalen absolutely did take a form of pay cut by opting in, but his dad also took a demotion (and likely pay cut) after the Mike Brown hire.
And the GM is Rick Brunson’s best friend. He would have likely ended up on the staff even if Jalen had extended or re-signed in Dallas.
Brunson took the maximum amount of money he could at the time. Being a small guard in the league means you have to get your money when you can, lest you end up like Isaiah Thomas. It made sense when he wasn’t quite at “King of New York” status
Easier to funnel money to Brunson through his dad. Especially with their prior relationship. You don’t go to the new guy and try something like this. You to to someone you had a prior relationship with to do it (his dad). It’s starting to look like this kind of stuff is just normal operating procedure for most teams in the NBA.
