This is going to be pretty long, so redirect me if there’s a better place!

I’ve been working on a project which assigns Pokemon statistics to NBA players (2025-2026 season) and finds their closest match (Gen 1-7). First, I want to acknowledge that this concept has been explored before, particularly wanted to shout out the projects here which are awesome showcases of talent and hard work in combining these two fandoms:

I suppose what’s unique here is that this project is emphasized on the statistics compared to the art, as I am far from an artist! Every player with over 300 minutes is assigned stats and represented by a unique Pokemon, entirely algorithmically.

Here’s a breakdown of the stat map:

HP: Player durability and usage. This is mapped by minutes played. As they say, the best ability is availability!
Attack: Scoring volume and efficiency near the rim. Players who lead the league in points per game show up here, as well as players who make a living in the paint.
Defense: Interior presence. Mapped by interior defensive fg%, rebounds and blocks. Serving as a natural counterpart to Attack, your traditional defensive center is well-represented here.
Special Attack: Perimeter and team offense. Mapped by Assists, TOV, 3 point shooting, and net offensive rating. Sharpshooters and those at the center of heliocentric offensive systems are recognized with this statistic.
Special Defense: Perimeter and team defense. Mapped by perimeter defensive fg%, net defensive rating, and steals. Pesky on-ball defenders will be represented here.
Speed: Game speed and hustle. Mapped with average game speed, lose balls recovered, charges taken, and box outs.

Players will have the following badges when they are in the top 10 percentile for any contributor:

HP
- Minutes played = Durable
Attack
- PPG = Bucket
- 2P% = Melee
Defense
- Interior defensive fg% = Protector
- Blocks = Eraser
- Rebounds = Boardman
Special Attack
- 3PM = Sniper
- Net offensive rating = Engine
- Assists-TOV = Facilitator
Special Defense
- Perimeter defensive fg% = Lockdown
- Defensive net rating = Anchor
- Steals = Pickpocket
Speed
- Loose ball recovery = Chasedown
- Charges taken = Parry
- Average speed = Runner
- Box outs = Boxout

NBA pokemon statistic assignment methodology:

Utilizing APIs nba_api and pokeapi
Players with under 300 minutes are dropped
All contributing NBA stats are pre-normalized via min-max normalization
Pokemon stats are placed on a percentile map. Overriding Min=20, Max=150
NBA pokemon stats are derived using the logic of the above stat map and by matching the value seen based on their percentile

Player-to-pokemon matching methodology

Now that each NBA player has Pokemon stats, an individual player and Pokemon can be compared by taking the sum of squares for the difference between each category, divided by the average of their total base stats
Because players and Pokemon can only be used once, they are matched using a greedy approach by ranking players in order of least difference and removing them once used

I’ll be releasing short-form videos going over the starting 6 for each NBA team for anybody that would like to follow along! I plan on releasing about every other day. Also, would be happy to discuss further on this thread so let me know on any comments or feedback!!
