I did Uber Eats for a little while because I was doing normal Uber too. It’s a fuckin scam for the driver. Not uncommon to get an order and it takes a total of 30 minutes for like 9 dollars or less. The drivers rely on tips. Ubers fault.

What’s crazy is I remember when both services came out and they said it was better than normal taxis and delivery because the workers were paid enough and you were not expected to tip. Idk when the “tipping” point for that was, but now I feel like it’s expected you tip for both. This is what bugs me. Being involved ina. Restaurant, if you’re the server or bartender, you’re the face to that consumer. If they act up, be rude or treat you in a foul manner. You take that brunt. It doesn’t fall back on the kitchen. There is a disconnect right now in the industry and clients. I work fine dining so I’m biased. But one thing i think people need to understand is America is not ready to just ditch tipping culture for restaurants. In this capitalist society if you don’t think the price of your food is not going up over 20% if tipping was banned, you’re wrong. It’s not just the server who gets your tips. It’s the support staff the bartenders too. There are days i tip out $160+. Also yes if you don’t tip i still tip them out and actually lose money serving you. So if tipping is just gone. Not only will the servers hourly need to compensated for, everyone else who gets paid from those tips does too. The cost is always put on the customer. Always. The complaint he makes about the same work for a bigger priced meal is ignorant.

I’ve spent 15 years in the industry. After we reopened from covid I was losing money on a quarter of my tables. I left the industry for a few years because of that burnout.

Prior to that, and since returning to restaurant work, ive averaged over 22% because im really good at my job.

I hate that so often its out of my control based on who gets sat in my section. You can give the best service to a table that hogs your attention for 2 hours and still tip out more than you make.

If the difference is you carrying a 15-20 lb bag 50 feet to your car and then 50 feet to my door versus as 2 lb bag, he isn’t exactly wrong. It’s delivery, not service at a restaurant. The latter can be pretty aggressive in terms of walking through the menu, checking on customers, tailoring meal orders or answering questions, etc.

I read it as him saying carrying a bag doesn’t magically become $400 more valuable in tips because i’ve got two tomahawks in it versus mickey D’s nuggets.

It’s not an ideal example (who the fuck orders 3K meals) but his point on tipping culture in that vein of work isn’t that far out there. Uber Eats is exploiting tipping culture to avoid paying drivers a better wage.

I don’t necessarily like tipping but this is very true. I’ve been throughout France, Germany, Italy, and Austria. Many places have higher sticker prices and/or charge a 10-15% service fee which is basically just a tip anyway. With smaller portion sizes. On top of that, many of the places don’t have tap water (yes, even if you specifically ask), charge you for bottled water, and charge you for refills. And no, I do not only go to touristy places, I have friends and family that are locals.

If you’re getting something really nice delivered, that might be like 3 meals, but if you’re getting something cheap delivered - $250 is A LOT of food.

He is right about UberEats because that’s one delivery regardless of how expensive your order is, but if you’re at a restaurant with table service and you’re ordering $3,000 worth of food then that likely means that you’re ordering a lot of food and drinks and therefore your server is constantly bringing things to you, checking on you, etc. so if you’re going to tip it does make sense to tip proportionally with how much service you’re getting.

Uber Eats drivers only get a percentage, which usually works out to below minimum wage. That doesn’t include expenses like fuel and vehicle maintenance. Tips can be a significant portion of their income.

If I take advantage of food delivery apps then I make sure I tip the driver accordingly, because I know they’re getting a raw deal, and for many drivers where I live, that’s the only steady job they’re able to get in this market.

Just dropping in to point out that the server probably has a mandatory tipout based on sales that doesn’t get capped. They are still paying a mandatory tip out based on $3000 in sales. Your $3000 in sales also means they were probably focused 100% on you and you possibly had 2+ servers and they couldn’t make any other money while serving you.

The Uber Eats apps also does the tip based on the total order cost not just the total cost of the food. So it’s 20% of the total cost of the food + service fees + taxes + any other fees associated. I always edit to do 20% of the meal itself.
