As an Australian who knows very little about Baseball outside of the big scandals, a quick look on Rose’s wiki shows that in addition to the gambling stuff (which I was well aware of), there are also reports of him using corked bats and close associations with a gym owner that was busted for selling steroids and coke.

I know this was all 5-10 years before Conseco, and then Bonds/McGwire et al later, but could it just be that Rose was the OG but never caught for this other stuff because it was the 80’s?
