Nah, in the early years, when Steph was locked in, he was an average to slightly above average defender. In the last couple of years he gives consistent effort on defence and is pretty decent. I actually think that Dame has a better body and is definitely far more athletic. He just doesn’t care about defence and dies on the first screen every single time. I actually didn’t understand the talk about Dame being bad on defence but if you watch him and his effort, it stops at the first screen which is basically every action out there (whether on ball or off the ball).

I like Dame but hours will and effort on D sucks.

Kon Knueppel’s rookie season really puts things into perspective.

Kon broke the rookie 3pt record and he did it while playing 81 games and shooting at a 42.5% 3PT%. He made 273 3s, something only 10 players in NBA history have ever achieved (Curry has done this 10 times). And it’s still 129 made 3s short of Curry’s single season record.

For Kon (the best rookie shooter the league has ever seen) to reach Curry’s CURRENT career 3PM mark, Kon would need to replicate his historic production for 17 MORE SEASONS to catch Curry, and Steph isn’t done yet.

Maybe one day someone will catch Curry’s records, but I think people heavily underestimate what it would take for that to happen. Another thing people forget is that when you have that great of a shooter opposing defenses are going to dial in on them. Curry’s greatness comes from not only his one of a kind hand eye coordination, but also his elite ball handling and GOAT off-ball movement.

Young players have been trying to replicate Curry’s game for over a decade now, and we still haven’t seen anyone even remotely close to him come into the NBA yet. I truly wouldn’t be surprised to see Curry’s records stand as untouchable for a long time.

I get that, but you’re only focusing on 1 dimension of genetic gifts: which is height. I’d argue that Curry having once-in-lifetime hand-eye coordination is as rare as being a 7 footer in height.

We can think of any all-time great as a multiplicative product of various low-probability attributes. Like if we simplify it considerably, let’s say that Wemby’s impact is a product of him being simultaneously (1) 7’5”, (2) Having very good mobility, and (3) Having very good coordination. While Steph is a product of simultaneously (1) Having once-in-lifetime hand-eye coordination, (2) Very good endurance, and (3) Very good balance.

Then the question becomes, which is lower out of these 2?

P(Wemby) = P(7’5”) * P(Mobile) * P(coordinated)

I think we can agree that the main limiting and lowest probability out of all of these factors is Wemby’s height and Curry’s hand-eye-coordination. So the question then becomes: is it rarer to be 7’5”, or rarer to have Curry’s hand-eye-coordination?

I’d personally argue that those are similarly rare.

The rarity of being 7’5” is essentially known; estimates suggest that there are ~3000 people in the world who are 7’ (source), and the number who are 7’5” would be exponentially smaller.

On the other hand, unfortunately, the rarity of Steph’s hand-eye coordination is obviously essentially unknown as it’s not readily quantifiable like height. But I’d suspect that it’s similarly improbable on the same order of magnitude as being 7’5”.

Jordan can’t be recreated because of the times. The competition he played against was much easier, and they had rules that barred the defense from going into the paint to stop ball handlers.

LeBron can’t be created because he is a physical freak and has longevity that has never been matched in the league.

Literally all you have to do to be as good as Curry is shoot a bunch. You don’t have to be tall, you don’t have to be a good dribbler, you could be the 2027 version of Kyle korver and be better than him. Not even getting into how the rules have made it easier to be a shooter over time as well– basically every year now there is a new rule that makes it harder to defend jump shots.

I don’t think you’ve ever watched curry play. He is a game breaker because of how he shoots off the dribble, off balance, and in many different slots while being insanely efficient and able to score from a variety of positions. What you said about not needing to dribble or whatever is literally nonsense.

Also you seem to be creating a strawman. Obviously nobody is going to be a carbon copy of any of these guys, but Kobe was just as tall as Jordan with similar athleticism and skillset. I’m ngl, Steph’s shot selection isn’t even “good” in the canonical sense. He has no business taking some of the ridiculous contorted off-dribble threes he does. But he’s just so fucking skilled that he makes them.

So for him they’re good shots, even though they wouldn’t be for others. A lot of times when Steph shoots, I think back to the immortal words of PG… “that’s a bad shot” 😂.

Me and a friend went, paid for just 1 hour

My average in open gym was 11-12 out of 20, my friend is somewhat better, he is ¹⁴⁄₂₀

After that one hour, bruh, we all thought we became Stephs.

After 400-500 shots with the machine passing the ball back, you become automatic

I made several ¹⁹⁄₂₀, my friend made several ²⁰⁄₂₀

Steph does that shit since he was 14, and he has 2 dudes rebounding and passing instead of the machine, every single day, for 500-1000 shots … Plus, he was born to do it, basically.

Absolutely. I was following this dude’s career and stats from his early years with GSW under Nellie. Even with all the ankle injuries during his first 4 years, the rate and volume of his 3s were already notable. At some points, he was second only to Steve Kerr in career 3P%, except Curry was doing it on a much higher volume of attempts and makes. He’s gradually slid down the percentage rankings since 2021, but what he’s done is still wild to me.

I think people measured his gravitational pull on defenses, but we can see it with our own eyes. He pulls 10 pairs of eyes toward him, and defenders have to pick him up from way out. When Kerr started splitting the ball-handling between Curry, Iggy and Draymond, that gravity became even worse because Curry could weaponise it off-ball. He didn’t even need having the ball in his hands to distort an entire defense.

To me, Curry is the biggest offensive threat in NBA history. IMO, Certainly the greatest player of his generation, on that same level as Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan.

And he’s nearly at 27,000 career points despite playing three years of college ball and effectively losing around two seasons to injuries. The fact that he’s still putting up these numbers at this stage of his career is ridiculous.

Another thing to note here: this guy dominated the bloodbath in the Western Conference, beating 11 50-win teams in the seasons where GSW won rings.

the only weaknesses I can find here:
-his defense but the effect on offense makes up for that easily.
-He needs other ball handlers to vary his approach and completely unlock his value and gravity

i know he’s super young but just based off his tools and athletic profile, Kon is way more Klay than he is Steph. Kon’s best case is being an automatic catch-and-shoot (or 1-2 dribbles) who makes really good decisions with the ball but isn’t a very high end shot creator.

I don’t expect our no point guard experiment next season to go well at all, and you’re going to see it with Miller’s shot distribution first and Kon’s 3-point volume second.

Honestly I expect a drop this year without Ball but I still expect him to be really good.

It’s damn near impossible for most guys to maintain that kind of number.

Add in that it’s his second year, more scouting reports, Ball not being there to set him up, and to draw defenders, him taking a bigger load on offense with volume and ballhandling, I bet he’s like 39% on the year plus or minus one.
