[Charania] The Washington Wizards are holding off on extension talks with Anthony Davis partially due to “unanswered questions” about Davis’ health.
Actually they’ve been answered, it’s just no one likes those answers lol
100% REAL lol
He’s got the knees of a 65 year old man
As a 61 year old man, this scares me.
The thing is AD doesn’t really have knee issues. Whenever he plays, he still runs the floor well for his size and is impactful on both ends
On one hand, ADs injuries haven’t been career-altering, they’re like random nicknacks that other players might play through.
But the book on AD is if he even has a broken hangnail he’ll sit out for weeks until he feels 100% perfect.. fine, but once you’ve shown to be that type of person it has to be factored into your contract valuation
It’s like his knees are made of clay. They’re still there and they won’t shatter, he just needs random rest for them to regain their form.
Someone post the list of every injury AD has had
From 6 months ago so I’m sure there’s more not on the list. 51 unique injuries.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/I8sOzGho8y
But the book on AD is if he
Nonsense, he played in the bubble finals on a bad foot. With the short offseason, hirt his ability to recover even next season. Played when he could on broken bone in navicular with bone spur causing stress reaction, also missed games
AD is aware of opinions like yours and tries to overdo it. Causing him to aggravate and miss more games. He has to accept he can’t be a 75+ game player any more; that he is brittle and has to be on top of things. He needs a good trainer or medical staff to tell him, no. Sit out and load manage. Dallas medical staff was not it.
I love AD, but that question has been answered over and over and over
“We can fix him.”
I wish I could upvote this 1,000,000 times
Time Lord just got a new deal and the Sixers with Embiid are the #3 betting favorite to win the Finals right now. I think rumors of AD’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. On the other hand, it’s really obvious that he wants another giant payday and he hasn’t been healthy enough to deserve a long contract with a max salary.
This is obviously just posturing from DC to try to lower his asking price.
You don’t want to pay $60 million for a guy that’ll play 18 games next year? Crazy
He’s one of the best players of his era, one of the best two-way bigs in the NBA, and as recently as the 2025 play-in was still dominant. There aren’t many guys in the league who can conceivably put you over the line for a playoff run, and AD is still one of those guys.
He’s incentivized to get paid in full whereas the Wizards will want some of the injury risk baked into the contract. It’s a public negotiation right now and both sides are playing chicken. It’s not much deeper than that.
Anthony Davis has played just 243 of a possible 410 regular-season games over the last five seasons.
The best ability is availability.
Availability is always the name of the game. Let’s not pretend the extra rest during the covid season didn’t benefit that Lakers team. You don’t pay an aging vet big money to not play games unless your looking at just merchandise sales.
Yeah but you’re likely to get only 20 games out of him regardless and then when you get to the playoffs then what? There isn’t really load management like that then
18 games of AD isn’t taking any team anywhere. They’d be crazy to pay him that much. Maybe they can relate the pay to games played but it is still a major risk
While he wasn’t exactly the model of health in LA, he wasn’t only 18 games a year either. It feels like he lost his will or desire to play at all after the Luka trade.
I think rumors of AD’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.
I have heard this about a thousand times since AD started playing.
AD doesn’t die, he just exists in a nether state between life and the locker room.
He is a 10x All-Star with 2 gold medals and a ring. In the Finals that LA won, he averaged 25 ppg/11 rpg/2 bpg. Not sure why we need to pretend that his achievements are just theoretical.
The “washed” crowd can go look at his stats for the last few seasons. He still dominates and he’s 33 years old, with probably a few very good seasons left in the tank. His availability last season was at least slightly misleading since DC were actively trying not to win games.
Anyone who wants to win should want AD, provided that the price is right.
He wasn’t that good with us. It was kinda like KP, where they’d look good for a game or two, get injured, come back and play terribly, ramp back up to good then get injured again
The team was boned as soon as Kyrie went down, so it’s really hard to assess how it might have worked out otherwise. He did at least come back for the play-ins and put up some monster stats in those games.
There is a risk factor with him. What I disagree with generally is the idea that he can’t play anymore or that there’s zero chance that his next team gets a healthy run. That isn’t how probability works.
People will play the “of course he got hurt” game with an aging star when it suits their agenda, while ignoring examples that don’t fit that narrative (like Kawhi last season). There’s a balance between risk and reward with all players. If the risk is high with AD, so is the possible reward.
Also AD in his Pels era played a ton of games lmao, this dude said since AD started playing 😂😂
Sure, he has a few good seasons ahead of hi.
The problem is that those seasons aren’t gonna be longer than 20 games, lol.
The one year he was good in the Playoffs and available was coincidentally when the league shut down and let him rest. You don’t see the problem there? Unless we have another pandemic coming, I wouldn’t pay the price he wants.
That’s a hallucination. He was healthy and great the entire bubble year. And lakers were #1 team in the league. Pels era AD was also great
His problems kicked off after playing on a bad foot in the finals to win a ring, no proper recovery and so on and cascaded after that in subsequent years
AD wasn’t even that effective last year for the mavs. Maybe that was a motivation thing but he took a sharp decline last season
Yeah that last part there is the tricky part.
Nico, that you?
the Sixers with Embiid are the #3 betting favorite to win the Finals right now
And the Embiid contract is still considered the worst contract in the league by a lot of people. He’s also the most likely reason as to why they won’t make it very far.
Time Lord got 3yr/$44M. Not exactly a huge payday.
He’s also nowhere near as good. The Blazers leaned on Clingan to carry the load at the 5 for most of the season. Then when the playoffs came around, they ratcheted up Time Lord’s minutes and he became a more prominent part of the lineup.
It’s an interesting blueprint for keeping your injury-prone big relatively healthy, and the Wizards have a favorable situation to do the same type of thing with AD and Sarr. They can lean on Sarr across the grueling 82 game schedule and then ratchet up AD’s involvement in the playoffs when the games are more important.
A prove it season should be obvious.. prove how healthy you are /can be and get paid afyer taking that into account
AD can still play at a high level, but it is coming into question. Especially with games missed
We will give you the extension but you have to play three games in a row.
“Nooooooo!!!!”
I’m picturing him saying it like The Deep in the The Boys.
Picturing him saying it like Luke Skywalker finding out Vader is his father
I pictured him like when Anakin became Vader lol
Might be the hardest I’ve laughed in a theater at a non-comedic movie moment.
But you paid Trae to sit on the bench. Why not me?
He ends up playing 54 games but misses every third game!
He hasn’t missed any games in over a month though
AD has missed 0 games since June and I’m tired of pretending he still has injury issues despite that
He’s been an iron man of the summer, the AD disrespect has to stop
Still in street clothes though
Sounds like a franchise that should look into trading this player while they can credibly say he has no ongoing injury issues…
No other franchise would believe them which is why they need AD to play 3 games in a row at some point. Then trade him before the 4th. Haha
you are correct, and
this was a joke at how a lot of teams had interest in trading for AD before LeBron picked his destination. They missed their window, and if they weren’t going to extend him they should have traded him to Golden State or Philly
Agreed, though I’m not sure how real those trade discussions ever were vs. wishful thinking from ADs camp
Yeah that was my takeaway too. Why play hardball with the Warriors then not try to extend him?
Why would Philly want AD ??
I feel like their best chance was when Lebron was still mulling which team to join since the rumors were that he’d be more likely to join them if they had AD. Wizards got cocky and tried to ask for a ton knowing that and teams balked. Now they’re wavering on extending him.
Man, I’m glad he’s not our problem anymore.
They had the chance a few weeks ago and they said no.
I’m surprised by this news. I would’ve bet Davis would get his extension. I usually operate on the assumption these things are tacitly agreed to pre trade.
Aren’t medical exams part of trade agreements though? So it’s not like they would get away with hiding anything unless they had enough reach to surreptitiously bribe the other teams medical examiners
Honestly. You can just tell this is gonna be a disaster for them
Wizards giving AD a max extension would be a disaster. Trae Young’s extension was bad, but not crippling given their roster. Maxing AD on top would be an albatross and super dumb.
Please enlighten us on who the wizards should’ve got instead as a starting PG
They’ll reply “anyone but him” , “could’ve saved that money” and name no one/say who they should’ve spent that money on, funny stuff
dont you know his VALUE OVER REPLACEMENT PLAYER is ass and you can just find one of these players that dont actually exist in FA. i love advanced stats.
Someone who wouldn’t dominate possessions and dribble the air out of the basketball and give AJ a chance to show what he can do.
In the small sample size he played for us last year, he averaged his lowest usage rate while still keeping the assist numbers high. I think it’ll be just fine.
Maybe shouldn’t have played hard to get on the trade front hoping for an outrageous return compared to what they gave up for him?
You’re saying that as if the Wizards are unhappy with this outcome. This is exactly what they want: Davis on the team on a short contract.
Yea we probably would have been down to overpay a bit but they wanted every damn thing
Is it known what GS offered? I only briefly followed and only saw that WAS was never interested. Never saw any offers.
Jimmy Butler, a FTR, and a signed photo from Steph Curry I think
They wanted an Indian FTR? No wonder the offer was declined.
The vibe I got was they were in “if you wanna give us fucking everything we’ll listen but we don’t actually want to trade him” mode, so concrete offers never got laid down.
No. Some Warriors fans just want to pretend they know in any capacity what the offer was so they can blame the Wizards for potentially missing out on Lebron.
There’s no real source of that happening
I don’t think the Wizards want to trade him, they traded absolutely nothing to get him from Dallas, and would probably rather see him on the court for the next two years (even if only part time) so that their young guys don’t spend the first several years of their careers on 17-65 teams. That does irreversible damage to a lot of young guys.
But I think if they got a nice enticing package for AD, where they’d still be a respectable team after, they’d do it
all of the sourcing around the team said that they were never interested in trading AD.
Maybe they just like the idea of playing out the string with AD more than taking GS trash just because?
2 first round picks is trash?
where has it been reported anywhere that the warriors were willing to part with two firsts?
You need a FRP pick , probably more just to salary dump butler’s injured ancient overpaid ass
Afaik they are. They just dont like the extension AD wants and AD has history of not playing if he doesnt get what he wants.
Post Curry warriors picks are the opposite of trash
and if the warriors had offered them seriously, i think the wizards would’ve done it?
did warriors fans really expect the wizards to trade AD for jimmy and picks?
why is that crazy?
because the wizards have clearly shifted their focus towards winning, the corpse of butler and picks does nothing for them
yet they’re scared about his health.
their worries abt ad’s health doesn’t negate what i said
unless he’s out their whole win-now season
could thing he has a $60 million dollar player option and they can try again
Having a dude with 60M payroll that you dont know if he’s gonna play or not for a win-now team is absurd.
the wizards are not a win-now team, they’re just trying to win games in general
LOL. Good luck with that. The point is, trading ad for a max expiring and a good gs pick or two is good business, and they should consider it if it’s being offered
what’s to say that the picks are going to be good? we don’t even know what picks were offered. its good business to keep the star you just traded for and win games
Look. I’ll I’m saying is it’s not outrageous to think jimmy and two gs picks could get you AD. They’re not going to get much more for him. Personally if they want to keep him, that’s fine. But I think it’s kinda dumb. But I’m no GM
The corpse of AD might not help them, and at least you get draft capital?
sure but AD has a better chance at helping them than butler does and draft capital isn’t a priority for them right now
Winning what? Over what time horizon?
Not taking back meaningful assets when you have a chance for a player that you won’t extend is certainly a choice.
What meaningful assets? Definitely not from you guys
Post Curry picks are about as valuable as you can get
It’s a good thing then that none of what you said has been backed up by genuine reporters
Maybe cause what was clearly reported by all reporters is the Wizards will not listen to and are not entertaining any offers for AD
So you’ve made it clear you have no source to back up your original claim. And aside from the possibility that Wizards could’ve been posturing over AD, they were not entertaining calls for him and there was no reporting elsewhere of any kind of offer made for AD… then how can you have any idea of what the Warriors offered for AD or if they made an offer at all? Unless you’re just making shit up because you’re mad and want to blame the Wizards for your team not getting AD and subsequently Lebron.
I’m perfectly fine with how things went. This is how virtually all dynasties come to an unceremonious end and I had low to no hopes of extending it.
Throwing picks to get AD for a chance at LeBron (who it’s now reported never even told the Warriors definitively that getting AD would be enough) was a large risk, but that’s what was being reported.
The Wizards making it publicly clear they didn’t want to entertain any offers was a choice they made. You seem to be ok with that choice. Let’s revisit this in a couple years and see how it plays out.
winning games in 2027? butler is a negative asset, attaching picks doesn’t make that into meaningful assets. the wizards want to extend ad they’re just waiting, nothing wrong with their choices
It was the only offer they had. Wizards didn’t want anyone on the team (certainly not injured Butler), so it was moot.
Oh yes we will totally take your completely washed and recovering from ACL tear Jimmy Butler on essentially the same contract and a dogshit 1st round pick for a player who is still a championship piece but often injured. That’s our duty as the Wizards, to just bend over backwards for the Warriors and give them this asset for free!
No need to. they got him under contract this year and he’s def picking up that option year 2. A $60 million expiring could def be attractive to teams trying to get off bad money or it could just be good for them to open up that cap space if/when he leaves.
I’m excited to see how the Wizards do this year, they could be a fun team to watch
Yeah, AD isn’t opting out of \(60 million when his next contract is probably \)30+ million per year after that, in the Gobert/Sengun/Aaron Gordon range
I know he’s a health risk but AD better than those guys by a decent amount I’m sure he can get 50 a year but maybe 2 or 3 years someone will make that bet and honestly I’m not sure it’s a bad one depending on the team
He’s also probably the player with the biggest health concern in the league
The market for guys in ADs category seems to be changing fairly quickly. The environment a year from now could look different, and probably worse.
I’m not as convinced he’ll pick up the option. He’s going to want long term security.
His marketability is high. He is one of the few centers that you can put against Wemby and can dominate him both on the offensive and defensive side. I dont think there is a big man in the league, except Jokic or a healthy Embiid that comes close to being able to go toe to toe with Wemby.
He just needs to prove he can play 60 games. Or tatleast 55.
Get ready for rich Paul to say this is “disrespectful”
I still do not understand why they were not willing to trade him to Golden State.
Tanking rules. Washington doesn’t want to be “first” and if they suck again this year, they will be. Thus, Davis and Trae Young to “raise the floor” for their yutes and hopefully get them into the play-in.
Fans wanted this. I don’t think Washington’s fans did but lots of fans were screeching about “tanking” and the League did something and that has repercussions. Like the Wizards not trading Davis for broken Jimmy and draft picks because that’s “tanking”.
Even if AD doesn’t play a game they are going to be better than the nets, kings, and bucks.
The simple answer is they’re just done with tanking and want to compete. The owner Leonsis was famously anti-tanking to begin with which is why they waited way too long to trade Beal. Plus the 2027 draft is well known to not be very good anyway. Putting a good product on the floor now is worth more to them than nebulous picks in the 2030s.
Should have made the trade so they wouldn’t have to deal with him, plus LeBron would stay in the West
They got him for a song and their best players are still on rookie contracts. So there’s no need to ROI on AD or dump salary.
Wizard’s are going to regret not selling high on AD this offseason
Can’t sell high on a guy when perception is that he won’t play.
Davis is the opposite of overvalued right now.
LeBron wanting to play with AD increased his value to higher than it ever will be at this point
I mean they literally haven’t even seen him play yet. What’s selling high to you, bumler and a first?
selling high
AD was shipped off for AJ Johnson, #30 pick in this draft, a top 20 protected 2030 1st that likely will not convey, some 2nds, and expiring salary filler. AD proceeded to play zero games after the trade deadline. On what planet was there an opportunity to “sell high”?
What was the actual high offer?
How can you even sell high on him? They got him for pennies on the dollar and he’s showcased nothing since being acquired.
I know he got an artificial bump because of LeBron, but the market for him now should literally be the same as the market for him 2 months ago, which was low apparently.
Maybe they tried? I doubt many people are seriously interested…
Can’t sell high when the stock is very low
Thank you mavs for bailing the lakers out of this situation
Unanswered? Let me show you his last 3 seasons
Why would anybody pay this guy?
But he said he wasn’t missing any games this year though.
/s
I don’t get the “/s” - since he actually said that
How Shams really can’t speak coherently is wild to me
Didn’t the same “unanswered questions” exist when they made him unavailable in trade talks?
they could’ve just traded him while someone actually wanted him
We want him lol
AD “for him there’s the unknown of how the team looks this year, how competitive they will be, their playing style, and also, the future direction of the Wizards.”
As if that matters to him enough to not try to get a 4 year $275 mil extension if he doesn’t like how the 1st 20 games go? That’s been his goal since the Luka trade.
“Unanswered questions” is the nicest way to say, “we’re not maxing this guy because he’s made of glass”.
“Fool us *three times*? I don’t think so.” - Wizards before they max out an AD after one healthy season and his legs proceed to explode after.
Sounds like they are being less stupid
Y’all hear that? Sounds like dreams and nightmares to me…..AD you are now a 76er!
The unanswered questions will be answered by game 15 when he is out for the year.
Grass is green
Smart
The answer is no lol
“partially”
Thanks Captain Obvious
lmao
82 games
Does AD’s health know why kids love Cinammon Toast Crunch? 🤔
All seriousness, I don’t know why the Wizards are worried about another bad contract. The one thing they have consistently been elite at is getting off of some of the worst contracts in the league. The fact they actually got value from Beal when he had a no-trade clause needs to be studied league-wide.
Smart.
They’ve been answered, he’s held together with string and rubber bands
He will honor about 30% of that extension at best.
AD u ain’t healthy
AD got hurt right after this post
But I thought he was worth 3 firsts and swaps a couple weeks ago?
Hey a year ago he was worth one Luka Doncic so obviously he’s a huge asset
If Golden State was willing to make a decent trade for him, they should’ve done it.
Rich Paul and his paid redditors boutta do some work. Paul doing some work so his biggest client can have Davis in Philly. Heavy ass super team
speaking as a fan of a similar-tier franchise, it’s so weird to see the Wizards do something right
“Mutually”
“82”
I love AD for what he did with the Lakers, but like why would any team give AD a max? In this CBA agreement? In this economy? Cmon now
He’s an aging injury prone star. He’s fits Wizards max culture perfectly. What’s the hold up?
Why..do they not trust the ‘trust me bro’?
Guess this is what happens when they tried to bluff the Warriors that they wanted to keep AD long term.
Now everyone’s asking them where the extension is lol.
Davis is finished since 2024
Vindication, dub nation!
Joel Embiid is going to be a wizard isn’t he
They should trade him at the trade deadline
He will get released and end up on the Sixers
AD is on the wrong side of 30 and will be 35 by the time his player option is done . No team wants to be stuck with a 35+ year old injury prone AD at 50+ million a season . He’s going to have to take less unless someone is really stupid which is a high possibility .
Due to trying to trade him to Philly for embiid
Needs a DBZ hyperbaric time chamber at this point.
HAHAHAHAHAHHA
I hope they max him - god please let them max him
It’s good the wizards wanted to keep him instead of trading him to the Warriors for multiple FRP s.
Good ol bait and switch tactics. Trade him over to your team saying you will extend him and then once he is there dont extend him.
Best way to handle it. Prove it. He’s gonna be healthy af this year lol
I’m sorry but did you all trade for him while he was injured no?
I’m SHOCKED …. SHOCKED I tell you!!!
The last time I laughed to the point of tears and my ribs hurting was when he played his first game as a Mav. Scored like 28 pts in the first half, yelled at the camera “I’m him!!!” And then in the second half, crumpled to the floor on a non contact injury.
The faces of the fans were priceless … shock, disgust and anger all rolled into one.
It was like a scene out of a movie.
I don’t see anyway it makes sense to pay both Young and AD for the wizards. Maybe AD ends up taking a pay cut, but I personally don’t think it makes a lot of sense to lock yourself into that if you’re the wizards.
duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Sounds like they’re not serious about winning now and winning in the future
Should his next contract be more than $30 something mill per year?
The Warriors punching in the air rn
Aaaaaaand trade request incoming lol
Lmao why did they trade for him?
Because it was cheap to trade for him and they want to win games
Dear GM Dawkins,
20 games isn’t enough to base AD’s health situation on.
Wizards scream impulse buy.
SHOCKER… said not one person!!!
AD will be traded by midseason
I love AD and still miss him in L.A.– though I absolutely DO NOT the trade to get us Luka. But all us Lakers fans are glad to not be dealing with the constant anxiety of his injuries occuring.
Everyone has seen the endless slew of injuries he endures. I feel awful for him. But we have to be realistic. He’s 33 and insanely injury prone. He was having a killer 1st game for the Mavs before he got hurt again, IN HIS FIRST GAME, ON A NON-CONTACT MOTION.
‘When he’s healthy’ has been the rallying cry for AD supporters for multiple years now. It’s over. If he wants a max extension he either has to find an NBA team stupid enough to give it to him (I thought it was the Wizards, but perhaps the Kings would like to step in?) or maybe go overseas for some big bucks. AD playing in China would be HUGE NEWS… until he’d get hurt in his 3rd or 4th game.
