Jaylen Brown on his relationship with Jayson Tatum: “We won a championship together…There are ups and downs in any relationship. On my end, nothing but respect, besides when he plays the Sixers.”
Whether they talked since the trade: “Not really.”
They were business partners, that was it
Not every athlete has to be best friends with their teammates
It seems like this is more common than not. I hear a lot of guys on podcasts say they don’t really hang with their teammates like that and it’s just like any other job.
I feel it because I like my coworkers and respect them but have almost no interest in doing stuff with them outside of work.
Yeah not just that these guys travel, workout, party, stay at the same hotel then play on the court with each other for better part of the year. Unless we’re best soulmate buddies I wouldn’t mind getting some time away from them after all that lol
Bobi and Tobi ♥️
Yea I was part of a team (as part of staff that had to travel) and there’s guys you hang out with every day and guys you only see at the clubhouse and field/court. Away games are the same - guys who you see at check in when the keys get handed out and at the game. And then there are the group of guys who will want to get a couple drinks after the game and cap it off with Waffle House or will want to check out the sights - but I was in minor league towns so not always things to look at and the talent level at some of the Midwest bars yikes lol.
Reminds me of traveling for work. Best of times when we used to travel to LA, London, Copenhagen, etc. We all used to hang out even if we weren’t right just because it’s a great city so why not. Come to Detroit, Denver, Cincy, etc and the group was so small. Those great cities brought us together but seeing the talent in the Midwest and how boring it was really showed who was BFF with who lol.
lol there were times the nightlife was real bad and we ended up going to the strip club lol and we regretted it lol. Man the Midwest corn fed girls lol. There was one place we couldn’t wait to leave and told the bartender “Fuck… 2 drink minimum? Shit give me two beers right now and close it out” and we’d try to chug our beer and gtfo
I saw JB and Jayson in Vegas in 2022 during summer league at Drais Beachclub (after they just lost in the finals) and always thought it was odd that they had sections that were noticeably far apart from each other. Like if I wasn’t an NBA fan I wouldn’t have recognized they were teammates
If you ever played any sports at any level this is the most obvious thing ever.
You’re all on the same team and you all want to win, but that doesn’t mean you guys are friends off the court and hang out lol
All of my basketball teams I’ve ever been on had usually 2-3 separate friend groups. But on the court we all played together and did what we had to try and win. That’s it.
Idk why this is a shock to anyone
It’s shocking because a huge chunk of sub has never really played competitive sports and are very parasocial with some of these players. They want all these guys to be friends and go on podcasts so they can vicariously live through them.
You can always tell who played and who didn’t lol
On the other hand, there is a tendency for people to dismiss anything that isn’t on the court or explicitly laid out. Tatum and Brown were coworkers who didn’t need to be best friends. However, their thoughts on each other almost surely went beyond that and do, or did, matter.
Curry and Klay weren’t best friends, although Curry and Green are, but I tend to think that relationship was better and that it does mean something.
I love that this same thread of comments has already been posted but arguing the exact opposite
Because if you’d played with a guy for 10 years, gone through those battles with, grown up alongside? You shoot them a fucking phone call or get lunch or coffee or something. Doesn’t have to be out of affection- you do it out of respect for everything yall went through together. People have goodbye parties for people all the time at jobs, everyone says hey man I really appreciated our time together I wish you the best. In person, or in speech, not just some generic ass ig post.
Again, don’t have to be friends to observe normal human civilities
Yeah, everyone in here talking about how it’s just like any other job is conveniently forgetting that the vast majority of NBA players have literally never had a ‘regular’ job at any point in their lives
One team I’ve seen a lot of them hanging with each other off the court is OKC.
If I recall right Chris Paul kind of started that by inviting everyone to his house to hang or watch film etc.
What else are they gonna do in OKC?
Order KFC?
OKFC?
No that’s OFC
CP did start it but it’s also a byproduct of being in a city where there just isn’t that much to do
Then on the Clippers he organised a Halloween party and only Zubac turned up lol
I think the now-former Ja era of Memphis were pretty tight. Ja and JJJ showed up to Orlando to watch Desmond bane play in the playoffs.
yeah, steph and klay famously didn’t speak in the first 2 or 3 years they had in the league. even draymond admitted to not speaking much with steph during the off season.
I mean it makes sense and Jaylen hinted about this at why he was so tight with KP. Jayson came into the league a single dad and spends most of the time with his kid or hanging out with other dads. Jaylen is a single dude becoming a superstar in boston. They aren’t going to have the most in common.
Yeah, I’ve got coworkers I’m friendly with but wouldn’t talk to if I left jobs. Nothing wrong with that. Weird how Reddit doesn’t understand this and wants there to be beef between the two guys.
A lot of them have never held a job
Sir I’ll have you know, moderating subreddits and shitposting is a full-time job!
r/nfl mods would say so
Idk I feel like its hard to have an office job and think your relationship to your co-worker is really that similar to co-stars on an NBA team.
I’m not saying that have to be best friends to work together as team mates but it’s also not the same thing as sending each other emails.
I feel like I see this type of self-absorbed shit constantly on this subreddit. “This Jaylen Brown thing reminds me of what happened to me… One time, at my last job at a marketing firm, I was partnered with this coworker of mine who is also seen as a top performer on our team…” And then they go into a boring ass fucking paragraph about their lives.
It’s the only way to “seem” knowledgeable about the subject. They don’t know shit about ball but they think they look smart if they talk about it an nba locker room like it’s another day at McDonald’s
My opinion is that it’s not about the job, but about personalities. I can work with a lot of different people, but that doesn’t mean I want to go and have a beer with them.
Or played sports.
Oh this is the one. You can tell most Redditors have never played sports.
It’s kind of scary how many people on sports reddits seem not to have played sports before.
You’re not wrong but it’s a little different of a corporate or “regular” job of being coworkers and athletes who truly rely on one another and typically need to have a decent relationship or chemistry to succeed.
Not every job is the same. Some coworkers need a decent relationship and chemistry to succeed too. I work with a group of guys all day, we bullshit all day. Don’t talk at all outside of work
The talking I do with coworkers outside of work is send reels to each other.
Well both sides still win
Celtics won and the top two had a business relationship with each other and that’s it.
Team Friendship won this year and last year.
Change the Knicks team name to New York Team Friendship. lol that’s amusing. It really makes them so endearing though. When Josh and Jalen get to that podium its like hanging with your friends.
Typically but not always. Some of the winningest teams have fallen out in brutal ways, and some teams have stayed tight. Cavs for the most part were friends and same with the Knicks. But a lot of teams who have won rings you can tell they are coworking friends before being real friends.
Even if so, why do the two best players have to be best friends? Both of these guys seem like they’ve had close friendships with teammates.
You can coexist with a good professional relationship built on trust and respect.
I dont think MJ and Pippen hung out. Rodman said he never spoke to the teammates except at practice or in a game.
Kobe and Shaq weren’t best buds. Magic and Kareem didn’t like each other much. These are the most successful duos ever.
Nah you tell that piece of shit Steve from accounting that he’s a god damn butt chugging loser
It’s so funny when ppl online compare professional athletes to working at a “regular” job, it’s not the same
Have you ever listened to any NBA players talk about how they view playing in the league? It’s a job to them lol, same as everyone else in the world. Just because YOU’D think it’d be different for you doesn’t mean it actually is.
Cops, Fire, Military
I’m begging Reddit to stop acting like their 9-5 is analogous to the NBA. These dudes, in particular, spent at least 8 months of the year around each other 24⁄7.
Shams said they outright stopped interacting altogether in the latter year(s) of their partnership. Your 2 stars who spent most of their waking lives around each other having no rapport is weird.
It’d be one thing if they didn’t communicate on the court and there was friction but there are literally 0 reports of that.
I’ve worked next to people inside the same space that I would literally just wave and walk by if I saw them outside work and we both know that’s what we both want. Neither of us would want it different than that.
People living out their little psychosocial fantasies through these players. And of course, like it’s fun when they’re genuine friendships but it just isn’t always like that.
You’re getting mocked for pointing out the parasocial psychological element of fandom, but it’s a massive part of the product they sell. I would bet a lot that silver and the league doesn’t like brown talking about this. Players and celebrities understand this well.
I observe it with the comedy podcast circuit. Most of them are just coworkers, but act like best friends when on each other’s podcasts. We are a deeply isolated society and celebrities sell the illusion of connection. It’s how the whole society functions.
In addition to that, part of product every team and the NBA sells and tries to project is that the guys in the locker room are close, willing to sacrifice for each other, and consider themselves part of a fraternity.
It’s obviously not always true, but it enhances the romanticism of team sports and the experience for fans of those teams when they know or believe Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson or Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic are genuinely friends. I don’t blame people for being invested or interested when it turns out those relationships are not as close as perceived or presented.
I keep trying to point out how many fans underestimate the illusion of connection is to the product they’re selling. It’s a massive part of connecting to the tribal instincts that create fan loyalty. There’s a reason brown is only talking about this now, and you can be sure the league doesn’t like it, just like they didn’t like it when Pippen did it.
And the regular guy spends 40 hours a week for 11-12 months with their coworker. They’ve worked together for damn near 10 years, both guys grew with each other and practically knew everything about the other. Tatum had a kid early while Jaylen is obviously more on the adventurous side of things. People can grow apart without any animosity. Jaylen had ambitions outside of basketball, Tatum wanted to build his life around it. Jamal and Jokic probably don’t gaf about what the other is doing during the off-season. Luka was probably refusing Lebron’s golfing invitation with other 40 year olds. Kawhi’s only friend in the entire league is Paul George. If anything, athletes deal with more people in a 5 year career more than the average person would in a lifetime
I don’t want their to be beef. It’s a little sad as a fan that they spent 9 years together and seems like there wasn’t even a goodbye convo. But they’re entitled to live their life how they want so I gotta respect their choices.
I think its because there are alot of kids who dont understand that being at work all day is nothing like being in a school
If we don’t text or talk outside of work hours, then I’m not going to hit you up after we aren’t working together, even after 9 years.
I’m friends with a lot of my coworkers, but I see them more than my wife. I don’t have a desire to be close to outside of work
Tatum literally took a shot at Brown at a kids camp saying he doesn’t want to be the smartest person in the room
For 10 years? That you had healthy professional relationships with? Doubt it.
If you don’t at least make an effort to say hey, great to work with you, you will be missed (whether you mean it or not, def not in a generic ig post)? That means you didn’t like the person, end of story
Normal adult human behavior with respect to longtime amiable associates
Not just Reddit. The media world always tried to play up beef between these two for some reason. I guess because they’re both extremely good players? I don’t know, I didn’t really see any animosity between the two. They were consistently competitive and put up some absolutely tremendous numbers for a very young starting duo for their entire time together- despite not being best friends.
I agree, but I feel like a common theme on championship winning teams is how close the locker room is. Having your two best players be close on and off the court definitely helps with that
This is true but how much better do things work when everyone cares about each other on a personal level. The current buzzword is high trust environment. I would never force coworkers to be friends but also I feel if a workplace or team doesn’t have that level of connection it is harder to make things work.
The worst though is any organisation that says they are like family. That rarely works well and is always way more politics.
Even the splash brothers didn’t hang out that much in their offseasons - a Warriors beat writer said if they did, Steph’s marriage would have been in danger lmao
Klay a certified hoe lmao
Cheated on meg the stallion so everything tracks
People were shocked when they found out that KD wasn’t close to Russ like that, and he also barely hanged out with the Big 3 at GSW. He was closer to Javale and the bench guys.
They weren’t best friends but there was a baseline level of camaraderie. We give Perk a lot of shit but when he arrived in OKC, he said it was real clique-y so he nipped that in the bud.
KD being emo and feeling alienated in GS is what ended the Warriors run prematurely
KD and Russ were closer than KD wants to believe
I’m shocked KD has any friends…
They can’t all be the New York Knicks
Justice for Dante
But JB clearly does want to be best friends with his Philly teammates…
I mean, yes but even for co workers that would be weird to work with someone for 9 years and not say anything
The Knicks are an outlier fr
I’m sorry this is bs. When you see someone for a decade, almost every day, you build a relationship.
If after a decade they don’t see eye to eye then there’s issuesss. Are you human???
Every player has good friends on their teams, but they don’t necessarily click best with whoever matches them in talent. JB was really good friends with KP. Grant Williams was pals with Tatum.
They don’t have to be best friends, but there’s clearly benefits to having good chemistry with your teammates.
You wouldn’t reach out to your business partner of a decade?
Not every business partnership works out either
They were never coy about not having a close personal relationship. They never hid that part, ever. They weren’t even ambiguous. They’ve basically been saying they’ve been business partners for years at this point. They themselves handled it more maturely than the media ever did.
Tatum in general seems like a “clocks in, clocks out” type of guy
I actually hear it’s JB who is more like that. I forgot who said it, but Tatum is the one who is more likely to hang out.
Scalabrine has said exactly that about them. Not in a bad way whatsoever, just that JB is just more introverted of the two.
Even aside from that Tatum has a family now, JB doesn’t. It’s probably a lot harder to convince Tatum now to leave his wife and Deuce to go skydiving in Egypt.
Shit I wouldn’t leave Ella Mai
Tatums still close with a ton of guys who not even on the team. Daniel Theis hasn’t played for the Cs in years and was just at his golf event.
now that I think about it I cant really think of any teammates JB is super close to, I guess Smart when he was still on the team
KP is the one I can think of
him and KP were definitely close that first year but feel like it fizzled out, last season him and Walsh seemed close too
KP, Pritchard, Walsh, Neemy
Tatum and Grant Williams were really close when Grant was there
random but im from atlanta and have been to lou will’s pool party at his house multiple times and have seen tatum there multiple times partying/hanging out. i have never once seen jaylen brown in the city and he is also from atl. i have never thought about that until now. lmao
I second this. Tatum comes off as a ball is life type of dude. Brown is more of a business type individual. ..
Its not really either. JB is more likely to come with you to the club, or to some fancy event. JT is more likely to invite your kids on play dates or go on your podcast. They both got along great with most people, there’s just not a lot of cross over in their interests. They are both basically BFF’s with Marcus Smart for example.
if tatum were a jazzman he’d be an all time favorite athlete of mine.
It seems like he has bonded more with the role players than the other stars on the team throughout his career.
Reminds me of Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters, they didn’t really get along personally but were on TV for like 15 years together cause they had a great working relationship
Penn and Teller are another example like that
A bar in hell, but a bar they cleared for sure.
> in hell
What are some notable examples of NBA teammates hating each other?
Kobe and shaq
Kobe and Consent
Kobe and safe aviation practices
Gold standard answer
Kyrie resented tf out of Lebron when he came back to Cleveland. Wasn’t even talking to his teammates for stretches during the 2017 playoffs.
Kyrie was a weirdo for that. And that’s after winning a championship together? He’s a strange dude.
Yup. That was Ky entering his prime 3rd eye.
Kyrie and his Jagan eye
Kyrie was a Kobe stan and thought he was a #1 option and face of a franchise, didnt like Lebron ‘took’ that role from him. yeah he a weirdo for sure that spends too much time online
I mean compared to the media they’ve been very mature with the situation in regards to eachother (and in general tbh)
CP3 & Harden 🏀
Also Harden and Westbrook’s relationship fell apart while they were on the Rockets.
I mean Tatum has at times played up their brotherhood, mainly in response to people assuming there’s tension
Man, even Key and Peele don’t really talk.
That’s more a product of burnout. Jordan Peele left sketches, comedy, tv, and acting. Key hasn’t changed that much, but he is doing more voice acting than he used to and at a higher level. If you’ve ever had a writing partner you also had to do a bunch of takes with, especially in comedy, you get it. The jokes stop feeling funny when it’s a grind and you stop feeling like you even know what funny is. They lasted a hell of a lot longer than I did.
There’s also a whole situation with Key’s wife and Peele
Is this the whole ‘Jordan Peele wrote Get Out about Key’ stuff? lmao
I remember seeing stuff about this online and thinking it was shitposting
There was a story that came out recently about a writer working with key on a show and how he made his wife an executive on the show and she basically got it cancelled through her meddling. And apparently Peele’s wife called the writer to warn her about it
Oh you haven’t seen that article about Key’s wife? Look into that lol
Since you put it out there, what’s your experience?
Key is in every fucking commercial now. Half the commercials I see are either him or Shaq LOL
Ha yea I’ve performed a lot of comedy so I get that.
But they were still so sharp at what they did!
But like it can apply to Tatum and Brown. Like why they need to be friends off the court?
so the 3 stacks and big boi sketch was a documentary
hahaha pretty much
Successful business partners*, both of them like to stress that
JT had a kid while he was coming into the league. JB for the most part has been a bachelor in a major city. We really think these two were kicking it outside of work all the time? Of course not lol. They already spent plenty of time together.
And the media just keeps asking, hoping for a sound bite. JB and JT just keep giving these professional answers.
Employee has normal coworker relationship with his coworker
r/nba THEY MUST BE BEEFING WITH EACH OTHER
Idk why so many redditors think their desk job is similar to being a professional athlete. Totally different. Chemistry is far more important in sports.
Because you can have chemistry in sports without being great friends. Some people just work well together. In sports and outside of it.
Wall and Beal had great on-court chemistry and weren’t otherwise close. They got the same “they must be beefing” treatment.
It’s crazy that this shocks people because we have several examples of on-court chemistry but no off-court friendships not only happening, but also winning championships. It’s like being cordial acquaintances is a foreign concept to these people
It’s like a chick you’re casually seeing, where the sex is AMAZING but you just don’t click conversationally.
I’m on Reddit so I’ve never had sex but I read about this on TV Tropes once.
The banana boat picture really fooled a lot of people
OP is the type of guy to fall in love with all of his female co workers who are nice with him.
I play in a men’s bball league. Like 18 of us (most days 13-14 show up) play 5x5, I really only see everybody once per week when we play.
Steph and Klay had great on court chemistry without having to be best buds off the court. CR7 wasn’t besties with Ramos or Bale or Modric. They still won three UCLs in a row. Sports may be different from desk jobs but the truth remains you don’t need to be especially close to still work well together professionally.
I can have chemistry in the 10 or so hours I see someone a day, without also having to see them 4x a week for dinner.
Yeah I mean I definitely don’t think they’re beefing but I hate it when we end up just dumbing it down the other way.
Being professional athletes earning hundreds of millions of dollars in the public spotlight is nothing like you and me working alongside co-workers.
We have obviously seen teams overcome their star players not meshing personality-wise, but when you need to win on the margins, things like team chemistry, cohesiveness, ego management, and friendship are important intangibles to winning a championship.
All that but not necessarily friendship. Kobe & Shaq hated each other. MJ & Pippen had a contentious relationship. Bron & Kyrie had a weird dynamic. I feel like the Nova Knicks situation is more the exception than the norm lol.
Edit: Bron & AD were good friends, so I’m not saying it’s not a thing, but it’s not a requirement.
Ok but they proved they can win together regardless.
Being a professional athlete is unique but human relationships arent that different. We all have people we can closely relate to and want to hang out with and people you just respect and wish them the best
Harden better have been expensing all the strip club visits with teammates as “team chemistry building outings” then
Let’s not be obtuse here, yes they have a normal coworker relationship but clearly there was some underlying tension between them of who was really “number 1” on the team
They’re relationship is not to different than Adam and Jamie on Mythbusters. Incredible respect for each other professionally and did great things together professionally, but when they’re not working they don’t spend time with each other.
Their personalities probably annoy each other a bit, but nothing major and not enough that they couldn’t be professional with each other and get the job done, but enough that they choose to spend any extra time together. They don’t have ill will towards each other but they also probably won’t even think to text each other on their birthdays. We’ve all had coworkers like this, only none of us have a 24-hour channel plus social media dedicated to talking about our jobs
So between the 2 Jays, who’s Adam and who’s the walrus?
Bro’s acting like it ain’t obvious.
Yeah this is also like Topher Grace from thats 70s Show lol.
Didnt wanna hang out with his co workers because because they were just co workers, also knowing what we know now thats understandable 💀
No, it’s nothing like that, at least based on public knowledge. The Jays just have different personalities and interests that don’t fully line up, which is fine. Topher saw behind the curtin before the rest of us and saw the shitty people his costars were and activley wanted to get away from them. Hopefully we don’t learn down the road that one of the Jays are a shitty person, but unless we do you comparison makes no sense.
Except this would be like one of them missing an entire season for some reason and then the other publicly saying that it was the best season he ever had working on the show. That’s essentially what happened here.
It’s mainly Jamie, not Adam. You make it sound like it’s both. Adam is much more social and extrovert and would be up 100% for hanging out with Jamie after work but Jamie is a introvert.
Adam always understood that and had no problem with it.
Yeah- ie as many are saying, there is some degree of personal antipathy, at least on Tatum’s part- he’s the one who should, out of basic respect for what they’ve been through together, reach out. That’s not buddy buddy, that’s just being a normal thoughtful person. Unless you dislike someone.
Don’t know why people are so attached to the idea there was genuine antipathy there, at least from Tatum. Maybe they can’t deal with the idea that Tatum played a role in JB’s exit
This is all very similar to me and my old coworker I shared a shitty boss with.
Totally agree and I think the Celtics did Brown dirty in a way that leaves a bad impression for those who get it.
I don’t know the ins and outs of the actual basketball, business, and personal reasons for what transpired, but the way the org and media have characterized Brown is lowkey messed up.
Regardless of Brown’s basketball and character deficiencies in the eyes of the front office, valid as they may or may not be, it feels a bit like the uppity black person trope being used to slander while defending the org.
Again, I’m not really speaking from a place of authority or outright accusation, but that was demurely a part of the narrative that honestly sucks. Unfortunately I think it fits with the reputation of the Celtics, and part of the history of professional sports and America period.
That being said, it’s not that serious overall, and I don’t feel like Brown is a victim professionally speaking or anything like that.
Basically they weren’t best friends, they’re not enemies, they just happened to both be really good at basketball and be on the same team.. pretty normal if you ask me, if you’ve ever played a sport you know you aren’t always going to be super tight with all of your team mates
Did you ever play for 10 years alongside someone, from age 19 into adulthood, & go to 5 ECFs, 2 Finals, & win a title with?
Doesn’t need to be buddy buddy to do normal human thoughtful reaching out in a situation like this- Not doing so signals antipathy on Tatum’s part end of story.
I’d hate if I it was a requirement that I hang out with my coworkers after work or talk to them after I leave a job
Its completely different than a blue collar job and acting like it isnt is dishonest
Tatum has had a kid since he entered the league. They live entirely different lifestyles. Even with a blue collar job you will most likely end up hanging out with those who share a similar lifestyle to you. It’s become painfully obvious that these two don’t value the same things off the court. This isn’t Brunson Hart being roomies since college and then doing a podcast, these are two top end recruits who turned into top end players and have been living their own lives.
How? You go to practice and you go home. You travel, you put on your headphones and text/call people.
You don’t sit next to each other or go to the bars after practice, you just do your own thing.
How is it? Ive had teammates that I wasnt really close to and would stop speaking to them after the season was over
I really don’t think so. They were an extraordinarily successful, championship winning duo. They did all of that without being great friends.
They’ve already proven that they can have great chemistry on court without being close friends off of it.
They don’t seem to be the type to jam their thumbs up each others bums
Well least they weren’t leaving turds in each others lockers like Shaq
These dudes really were just coworkers
Even them some co-workers are close others aren’t. It happens.
Absolutely, nothing wrong with that.
I have the same relationship with lots of my old coworkers lol
Players don’t need to be best buddies and idk why fans think thats the case. They couldn’t be more opposite either, Tatum is a Jordan athlete, insanely PR trained, a father, and has done everything in the typical star way with brand deals etc. Brown has his own brand, speaks out constantly about whatever he feels, and goes against the grain. Like people are different and thats ok, they played well together and got a chip thats what matters lol.
LETS GET NEGATIVE
This shouldn’t be surprising at all. Jaylen and Jayson always gave off a “we’re just co-workers” vibe. And that’s completely fine.
It is a total canard & rank misperception that “not being buddy buddy” exempts Tatum from the totally normal human behavior of reaching out to a departed colleague of 10 years (in a work situation way more akin to being soldiers in the same unit for 10 tours of duty than our shitty day jobs)-who even works with anyone for 10 years straight anymore, let alone from age 19 on, going through what they went thru?
Its a basic human respect for all they’ve gone thru together. It’s like expressing sympathy when people you have amiable relationships are dealing with serious life stuff. It’s pretty much pro forma, unless there is underlying antipathy. I don’t understand how people don’t seem to get this or why they’re so resistant to the fairly obvious fact that Tatum did not particularly like JB, & no longer wanted to play with him. JB clearly wanted to remain a Celtic.
Again, for the cheap seats- it ain’t a matter of friendship it’s basic human thoughtfulness, that you extend out of respect & decency whether you feel it deeply or no.
Is “didn’t really talk” the same as no contact? Isn’t it possible that Tatum sent a text wishing JB well, and JB thanked him, and that was it?
in other words…
yeah, he cool
Freaking Hollywood movies and tvshows put this idea of 24⁄7 bromance, best friends and soulmates crap in viewers/audience mindset, it only happens and goes for so long in movies/tvshows unless you are both weirdos.
Especially coworkers. People forget they have personalities and ambitions outside of there work. Tatum might like high end restaurants and going to Disney world with family, JB might like going to local social spot and traveling with his entourage.
They probably saw they worked well together on court but two different types outside. People think this is military or something. Guys play go home, guys play on the road and go to hotel room after, there not sleeping in barracks together
It’s actually a huge tool for social control. Celebrities understand this well. People are very isolated and calibrate their social reality parasocially through media. It’s more political than people realize.
Man they really don’t give af about each other at all lol
How did you get that out of “nothing but respect”?
All these comments saying “yeah it’s just like any job” is confusing to me. Brown and Tatum don’t have to like each other, but their job isn’t like your job. They spend virtually every day together for months. They see each other in moments of incredible vulnerability. I think most people would expect, if not a friendship, then at least something deeper than “that’s my coworker” energy.
He answered the question he knew they’d ask the way he was supposed to. I think the follow up caught him off guard
Honestly Jayson Tatum getting no media attention during this time is really interesting. I do suspect that Tatum was a big reason that Jaylen Brown got moved too. At the barest minimum, I know most superstars would be more outspoken about their costar who they won a chip with getting moved.
Was always clear to me they kept professional for the most part so not surprising to hear.
My takeaway from this isn’t Brown’s response, which is 100% professional and not at all newsworthy. It’s that when Brown gives said professional response, the journalist asks a follow-up clearly attempting to stir shit up so he can get a headline. What the fuck happened to journalism?
I mean I chatted a lot with my coworkers when we worked together. Hung out afterwork sometimes. But once they leave the company we dont really keep up. It happens.
In the early Embiid and Simmons, everyone knew they weren’t that close. People always said they should be more like “The Jays” in Boston. Teammates don’t need to be friends, it’s a business at the end of the day.
We’ve all had coworkers where work always went smoothly when we both worked and had no issues. But once we stopped working at the same place, we never talked again. It was never fake, it’s just we’re here for the same common goal, that’s it
They won a championship together they don’t have to be best friends i remember at one point Tatum talked about jaylen baby sitting for him. People sometimes aren’t friends forever or stay close forever they won championship together that’s the only thing an average fan will remember.
Oh boy, I can’t wait to see the fanfictions that this will spawn!
They were work colleagues. Pretty much the start and end of it. Not everyone is super close at work
They were coworkers didn’t need to be besties.
Bro the media treats sports teams like a band of brothers. They colleagues.
Almost all my friends work in different places. Same goes with these athletes. Jalen Johnson was training with LeBron for two offseasons despite being on different teams. Way the world works.
Oh nooooo you’re not good buddies with people you work with.
Boston will be better than these hyped pretenders
Every relationship is different. Yes, it’s a job at the end of the day, but you hope people can be on good terms and civil. I’ve seen people who seemed extremely close at work who ended up never talking again once one of them left. Sometimes, one side was surprised at the lack of contact. Work friends to real friends can sometimes be a grey area. It would have been nice if they at least said goodbye and wished each other luck. I assume/hope when they see/play each other, they’ll be warm towards each other and not like the first Kobe/Shaq meetup. Given Tatum’s social media post, you kind of wonder, though.
Not a big deal at the end of the day, though. They’re adults, and not everyone can be friends/aligned with each other.
Curious if everyone finding an issue with this are best friends with all of their coworkers?
I’ve been at my job for 13 years now. I know everyone that works here. We went through COVID together, and ups and downs of the company.
If I were to leave, I don’t think I would talk to more than a handful of people from here.
At the end of the day, these guys are business partners. They don’t always have to be best friends.
Wow
People keep equating their regular jobs to an NBA team and I don’t think it’s a fair comparison.
Like do they have to be friends? Absolutely not. But it would be strange if they never became anything more than acquaintances after all the time they spent together in Boston AND after having won a championship together as the top 2 players during the whole stint. That you’d have to admit.
it’s not like Magic and Kareem were best friends, and they still won 5 titles.
people gotta realise that not everybody has to be in the same banana boat
Obviously it’s FINE that they’re just work buddies. But of course we’d LIKED to see them be best buddies. Especially with them playing together for so long from the beginning of their careers
But it’s just apparent that they have very different personalities.
Has there ever been any speculation as to why they don’t really roll with each other? Can’t say I’ve followed it closely.
Just different personalities?
